Thanks again for the thoughts and wishes! It was otherwise a somewhat uneventful day, but I did get a nice card from my friend Julie, who forgot all about me last year on my big birthday. I should be getting together with her again soon, however. My sister sent me a package with some nice kitchen presents, and I'll try to photograph those this week-end. She's getting better at understanding what I like, and what she sent was very cute. We did end up going to the Thai restaurant and had the Royal Golden Baskets for appetizer - one of our favorites - but they were out of the Curry Fish Cake. The baskets come empty with the fillings on the side and are perfectly bite-sized. Kevin had Pad Thai, and I had Jungle Curry with beef. I ordered that because it has Thai eggplant in it and no coconut milk. I also ordered crab fried rice because they are generous with the crab, and I didn't know that my dish came with steamed rice. We took most of the crab fried rice home with us. The best thing about this birthday is that my Chinese curse is now over! According to a Chinese palmist, my life line supposedly ends at age 60, although he did tell me that European palms are different from Chinese, and so I might now die then. I got a card (late) from my boss (the owner of the company) today, but that was only the second one I got this year, and the other one was from a co-worker. Here I do not know how you tell if it is someone's birthday - I do not think it is as personal here as it was before. I do not think my birthday is on my profile here, but Scott knew it was my birthday because it was on FB, which I seldom visit. Sally, I try to make my butter cookies every Christmas also - partly because they are so easy, and I like simple cookies. I'll have to see how my pie is today. I used a metal pan instead of Pyrex, and the crust slumped a bit during the first baking, but I tried to push it back up the sides before it cooled. I had thought that I always used a metal pan, but maybe not this one, which is non-stick. Next time I'll try one of my new 8" metal pans. I think the pan I used for this one was too large, but it was 8" diameter at the bottom. I guess I'm supposed to measure the top diameter instead. Lars

It looks like I'm going to be freezing a lot of my lemons, as my tree is pretty much loaded at this point, and it won't be later in the year. I freeze the lemons whole and then defrost them in 10 second intervals in the MW - practically as good a fresh, but they do get a bit softer, which is great for limes, a bit less so for lemons, as it makes it a bit more difficult to zest. Nice to know that you are a fellow designer, Sleevendog! At one time I had hoped to be a set designer, and when I first moved to L.A., I was across the street from what had been MGM studios in Culver City, and I could see the MGM lion on top of one of their buildings from my kitchen window. It was no longer MGM by then, but the lion was still there, although it has been missing for some time. Kevin works there now and it is Sony Studios, but he unfortunately is not in any of the design positions. When I was a clothing designer in San Francisco, I also designed and made costumes for the stage, but never for movies. I will try to check out all of the stores recommended - I really should replace an office chair at home as well, now that I see more interesting options. I really wish I could get some of the dining chairs I designed for my house - or at least an occasional chair, but they would have to give me a deep discount. Thanks for your comment, Sally - that really makes me feel better! Sometimes I do not feel appreciated at work, except from my boss. If I get new chairs, I'll post photos, one way or another!

Thanks! Yes, the weather is perfect today -- too bad I have to work. Kevin will take me out for dinner on Saturday, as he gets home from work too late to make it worthwhile, and so I am postponing my birthday until then. He did buy me a very nice Pogo book - hard bound new edition starting with Walt Kelly's early works and going through 1952. This is volume one, and I will want to get volume two when it comes out. I have most of the old Pogo books, but some of them are so fragile that I barely want to risk reading them in bed. This new book will solve that problem. My sister gave me an anthropology book on the Maya, but I think it is more of an adventure book than anthropology. That's okay - I will enjoy it anyway.

Yesterday I lost a crown, and now it looks like I will need another implant. Not the best way to start off a birthday, and the dentist did not put a temp in because she said it would mostly fall out(!)

Thanks for all of the wishes, and I will give a report on Sunday of our outing, if anything interesting happens!

Happy birthday, Lars. Books are my favorite gift. I love books and reading. Sorry about your dental woes. I have one crown that I am trying to keep in place because when it's gone I'll have to get an implant. Wow are they expensive.

Anyhoo -- enjoy the day. Nice that you can extend the celebration to the weekend.

Thanks for all the wonderful birthday greetings! It seems like no one sends cards any more - I got one from my boss and one from a co-worker, but nothing in the mail and nothing from my family in the way of a card. I did get a lot of messages on Facebook, but I rarely go there, and so I'll have to take another look.

Two co-workers took me to lunch at a nearby Greek restaurant (that I love), and I had Mousaka, but I really love their Lahanodolmades. Anyway, we had a good time, and Carlos told me that he had been craving Greek food ever since he left Montreal.

I am planning a relaxed week-end and hope to get my taxes done so that I can budget money for my dental work. I have another dentist appointment on March 2, and we'll discuss the best plan for the tooth at that time. I'm really hoping for a root canal and crown rather than extraction and implant, but I have a feeling that I will end up with the implant. I don't want to get another crown just to lose it.

I'm making stuffed portobello mushrooms for dinner tonight - that should be easy enough to eat!

Katie - why wouldn't you have kept the Pogo book?!? They are very funny!
