Thanks, Scott! Yes, today is my birthday, and you are one of the few who noticed, although I have not checked FB yet. I normally go there only once a week (or less often), but I will go today, since they announce very loudly when you have a birthday. Kevin gave me a nice apron (he gave it to me yesterday, since I won't see him again until late today), and my sister sent me a small package with three items - a cut-proof glove (different from the one I already have, and so that is good), an unusual spatula (looks like a putty knife), and some onion goggles, which may or may not work, but they will be less cumbersome than the swim mask and snorkel I wear when making Habanero sauce. From the Habanero chilies, it is very obvious that breathing the fumes is what causes irritation, which is why a snorkel is necessary. We may or may not go out to dinner tonight, depending on when Kevin gets home. Yesterday morning I started pizza dough to have for dinner, but then I decided that I wanted to make popcorn for the Oscars, and so I put the pizza dough in the fridge, although it will keep for a couple of days. I did make a lime pie for my birthday, and I need to make some whipped cream to put on top of that this evening. I had thought that I had a lot of limes on my tree, but I only had lemons, and so I had to use limes that I had stored in the fridge. I got a whole bunch of them last week, but now there are almost none on the tree. Thanks so much for remembering, Scott! If you like, you can come over for some pie!

I got a card (late) from my boss (the owner of the company) today, but that was only the second one I got this year, and the other one was from a co-worker. Here I do not know how you tell if it is someone's birthday - I do not think it is as personal here as it was before. I do not think my birthday is on my profile here, but Scott knew it was my birthday because it was on FB, which I seldom visit. Sally, I try to make my butter cookies every Christmas also - partly because they are so easy, and I like simple cookies. I'll have to see how my pie is today. I used a metal pan instead of Pyrex, and the crust slumped a bit during the first baking, but I tried to push it back up the sides before it cooled. I had thought that I always used a metal pan, but maybe not this one, which is non-stick. Next time I'll try one of my new 8" metal pans. I think the pan I used for this one was too large, but it was 8" diameter at the bottom. I guess I'm supposed to measure the top diameter instead. Lars

It looks like I'm going to be freezing a lot of my lemons, as my tree is pretty much loaded at this point, and it won't be later in the year. I freeze the lemons whole and then defrost them in 10 second intervals in the MW - practically as good a fresh, but they do get a bit softer, which is great for limes, a bit less so for lemons, as it makes it a bit more difficult to zest. Nice to know that you are a fellow designer, Sleevendog! At one time I had hoped to be a set designer, and when I first moved to L.A., I was across the street from what had been MGM studios in Culver City, and I could see the MGM lion on top of one of their buildings from my kitchen window. It was no longer MGM by then, but the lion was still there, although it has been missing for some time. Kevin works there now and it is Sony Studios, but he unfortunately is not in any of the design positions. When I was a clothing designer in San Francisco, I also designed and made costumes for the stage, but never for movies. I will try to check out all of the stores recommended - I really should replace an office chair at home as well, now that I see more interesting options. I really wish I could get some of the dining chairs I designed for my house - or at least an occasional chair, but they would have to give me a deep discount. Thanks for your comment, Sally - that really makes me feel better! Sometimes I do not feel appreciated at work, except from my boss. If I get new chairs, I'll post photos, one way or another!

Thanks for all the wonderful greetings! I am at work - it would have been too depressing to have stayed at home. They decorated my office nicely today, although I don't know when they did it.

This is a major birthday for me because I turned 60, and it doesn't seem possible. A roommate from Hong Kong that I had in Austin (when I was back at university in the late '80s) read palms, and he told me that my lifeline ended at age 60, but then he also told me that European palms were different from Chinese palms, and so that might not be the case for me. So either I'll be living on borrowed time or I can be glad that I'm not Chinese.

DB said he would take me to the Buggy Whip Restaurant for dinner tonight (since I will be too depressed to cook!), and a friend told me to be sure to ask for a senior discount! Since most of the BW clientele are older, they might not offer that discount. The restaurant is only a few blocks from our house, making it the closest one, and it is almost walking distance. I have a feeling that I will feel like I am in Palm Springs when I go there.

I will say that I am happy to be working and also happy to have so many wonderful friends here! Love you all!!

Happy Birthday, Lars! DH turned 60 in October, and this was the first birthday he wasn't depressed about. For some reason, he seemed happy about it. I think because it's one year closer to retirement, which he's very much looking forward to.

I hope you manage to climb out of the glums and have a great day and even better year.

Lars that restaurant looks like a good place to enjoy yourself so don't be depressed!

Didn't they tell you that after 50 you start to count backwards!

And as long as younger people don't stand up to offer you their seat you're still looking good!

I too am stunned that you are 60, Lars. I figured you for early 50's at the most, even late 40's. No lie.

And I've got two years on you. I hate being on my 60's but it beats the alternative.

Maybe Dud is more appropriate! I wish you could be here with me also, and we would have a great time. I just got a BD cake at work, which is the first one I've had in years, and so that perked me up. I do feel my life is getting better instead of worse, and the last year has been one of the best.

Thanks, Lee - I'll remember to take the camera. I have a feeling that the restaurant will be very dark, however.

I never knew my birthday was on Nat'l Pancake Day, but it has frequently been on Mardi Gras. It's also my parents' wedding anniversary.

Now back to work...

Thanks for all the birthday wishes and greetings! Dinner last night went well, but DB forgot to bring his camera. I thought he would be able to use his phone, but he didn't bring that either :(. We'll try to take pictures this week-end, however.

For dinner I had filet mignon, medium rare, and it was huge. I ate half of it and took the other half home, which I think will reheat fine, since I left the middle. I like eating the crusty outside parts first, and so I can make a new crust on the leftover part, which looks completely rare. I had garlic potatoes and broccoli (I ate all the broccoli first) as sides, and Kevin ordered the two lobster dish that was a special of the day. It was supposed to be an appetizer since it was a la carte, but he had it as a main course and ordered a side salad. I had New England clam chowder as my first course, which I really liked, and I gave DB half of my garlic potatoes, as the portions were huge. We even have a couple of lobster claws left over, which I will have later today.

The restaurant is one year older than I am, minus two days, and they had a picture of Liberace at the entrance, and so I guess he ate there.

I would have never guessed you were turning 60. You have taken very good care of yourself and it shows!! Age is a state of mind......
