I'm definitely still celebrating, so no problem with being late to the party - it's still going on today!! The stove is scheduled to arrive today between 2:45 and 4:45 PM Pacific Time, and so it's not due for another hour and a half at the very earliest. I cleared a path, and now all I have to do is finish cleaning the rest of the kitchen, which is not essential, but will be nice. We got most of the path cleared yesterday, but there really wasn't a whole lot we had to do. Everything I moved today is easily portable - a couple of things are on casters, and so they roll in and out of place. It might be too dark by the stove is in place to take pictures today, but I can always use a flash. I think winter is over, however, as it is supposed to be 75Â° by tomorrow, but it will still be cool enough here for me to do some serious baking! Actually, it's usually not hot in the summer either - and anyway I have A/C. I'm still excited about the stove! Lars

Thanks for the belated wishes as well - I guess I got my last birthday present today, which was a new crown for one of my teeth! Sol, my family was good to me this year - Kevin got me a book that I like very much, and my sister sent me a package that arrived yesterday, thus prolonging my BD a bit. KD, was your son's birthday the same day as mine? I know that Sooz was celebrating someone's birthday last week-end also, but she did not say whose. I have had a lot of friends with birthdays right around mine, and Kevin's is exactly three weeks after mine (except on leap years), and we are planning to go to Palm Springs for that. Colleen, "Russian Salad" was more like a Salad NiÃÂ§oise, in that it had potatoes, green beans, tuna, HB egg, etc. but it had a different dressing on it. All in all, I did have a very happy birthday. Last year my birthday was the first one I had had after my parents passed away. My birthday was also their anniversary, and so it was rather sad - so we went to Death Valley. Thank you everybody! Sorry I have been kind of AWOL. Lots going on...lost my job, trying to find a new one, Whew. I need to get back here and start communicating with friends again. It's been kind of hard. No cake for me though. Sigh. But, we are going on a short camping trip on Wednesday. Thanks, all!! We are in Death Valley, and there is only spotty internet connection here and no cell phone service. I'll be surprised if I can send this message. Weather is nice - in the mid 70s during the day, but it was 50 degrees early this morning. Some friends are supposed to meet us here today, but they don't know that their cell phones won't work yet.

Yesterday on the drive here we drove close to China Lake Naval Testing Area and were chased by 3-4 fighter jets as we approached DV on hwy 190. They swooped down on top of us from behind, and the noise was so loud, I though the car was exploding - or that we were at least having a very loud blowout. Then we could see the planes close up right in front of us. It was very scary, but at least dramatic and exciting.

Ann, this year cannot help but better than last! Thanks for that thought!!

I will probably not be able to post much or even read much on line until we get back. We are here for five days.

Today is also my parents' wedding anniversary, and this is why I wanted to get out of town. I think this was a good idea, and I am not sad or depressed as I expected to be. I am using my laptop, and it is a bit awkward for me, as I almost never use it.

Lars, I was hoping the Fly Over was on time for your birthday, it was a struggle getting them scheduled just as you were approaching the DV on Hwy 190. Glad it worked out...oh, I ordered 5 jets but whatever.

Death Valley is a very good vacation place, and so far we've seen lots of French, German, and Japanese tourists, as well as a few Canadians. Saturday we went to Zabriskie Point, Golden Canyon (drive through), and Dante's view - all before lunch. Then we met my friends from Utah, who had to wait to get into their room, and after lunch we went to Rhyolyte and Beatty NV with Mark and Greg. Yesterday we got an early start to go to Ubehebe Crater and decided to stop by Scotty's Castle on the way. We could not get a tour for the inside for an hour an a half, and so we only did the outside self-guided tour, which I felt was enough. Then we went on to the craters, which Kevin and I had explored before, but Mark and Greg made quick work of hiking down and back up the 500 feet of elevation change in the crater. Kevin and I went toward the smaller craters. Next we went to the racetrack on a very bad gravel road that took three times as long as it should have, but we got some great photos there of the "floating" rocks. After that, we decided to make a loop across Hunter Mountain to have dinner in Panamint Springs, instead of turning around and going back the way we came. The six mile road from Teakettle Junction (where we had lunch) was a dead end, but we decided to take the other road, which Kevin and I had taken 12 years ago and almost got stranded in mud from melting snow at the top of the mountain - and we got lost along the way at a "Y" in the road that went to a dead-end at a cliff where there was a dilapidated building and a rusted out 1920s car.

ETA: The road we chose to cross Hunter Mountain was closed due to damage from rock slides, floods, and landslides, which removed or covered parts of the road. There was no warning of this from the Teakettle Junction end of this road.

Thanks for the warning to stay safe, but it came perhaps a bit too late!
