Thanks for all the birthday wishes and greetings! Dinner last night went well, but DB forgot to bring his camera. I thought he would be able to use his phone, but he didn't bring that either :(. We'll try to take pictures this week-end, however. For dinner I had filet mignon, medium rare, and it was huge. I ate half of it and took the other half home, which I think will reheat fine, since I left the middle. I like eating the crusty outside parts first, and so I can make a new crust on the leftover part, which looks completely rare. I had garlic potatoes and broccoli (I ate all the broccoli first) as sides, and Kevin ordered the two lobster dish that was a special of the day. It was supposed to be an appetizer since it was a la carte, but he had it as a main course and ordered a side salad. I had New England clam chowder as my first course, which I really liked, and I gave DB half of my garlic potatoes, as the portions were huge. We even have a couple of lobster claws left over, which I will have later today. The restaurant is one year older than I am, minus two days, and they had a picture of Liberace at the entrance, and so I guess he ate there. Lars

Death Valley is a very good vacation place, and so far we've seen lots of French, German, and Japanese tourists, as well as a few Canadians. Saturday we went to Zabriskie Point, Golden Canyon (drive through), and Dante's view - all before lunch. Then we met my friends from Utah, who had to wait to get into their room, and after lunch we went to Rhyolyte and Beatty NV with Mark and Greg. Yesterday we got an early start to go to Ubehebe Crater and decided to stop by Scotty's Castle on the way. We could not get a tour for the inside for an hour an a half, and so we only did the outside self-guided tour, which I felt was enough. Then we went on to the craters, which Kevin and I had explored before, but Mark and Greg made quick work of hiking down and back up the 500 feet of elevation change in the crater. Kevin and I went toward the smaller craters. Next we went to the racetrack on a very bad gravel road that took three times as long as it should have, but we got some great photos there of the "floating" rocks. After that, we decided to make a loop across Hunter Mountain to have dinner in Panamint Springs, instead of turning around and going back the way we came. The six mile road from Teakettle Junction (where we had lunch) was a dead end, but we decided to take the other road, which Kevin and I had taken 12 years ago and almost got stranded in mud from melting snow at the top of the mountain - and we got lost along the way at a "Y" in the road that went to a dead-end at a cliff where there was a dilapidated building and a rusted out 1920s car. To be continued - computer and internet service acting up! Lars ETA: The road we chose to cross Hunter Mountain was closed due to damage from rock slides, floods, and landslides, which removed or covered parts of the road. There was no warning of this from the Teakettle Junction end of this road. Thanks for the warning to stay safe, but it came perhaps a bit too late! Thanks for the belated wishes as well - I guess I got my last birthday present today, which was a new crown for one of my teeth! Sol, my family was good to me this year - Kevin got me a book that I like very much, and my sister sent me a package that arrived yesterday, thus prolonging my BD a bit. KD, was your son's birthday the same day as mine? I know that Sooz was celebrating someone's birthday last week-end also, but she did not say whose. I have had a lot of friends with birthdays right around mine, and Kevin's is exactly three weeks after mine (except on leap years), and we are planning to go to Palm Springs for that. Colleen, "Russian Salad" was more like a Salad NiÃÂ§oise, in that it had potatoes, green beans, tuna, HB egg, etc. but it had a different dressing on it. All in all, I did have a very happy birthday. Last year my birthday was the first one I had had after my parents passed away. My birthday was also their anniversary, and so it was rather sad - so we went to Death Valley. Thank you everybody! Sorry I have been kind of AWOL. Lots going on...lost my job, trying to find a new one, Whew. I need to get back here and start communicating with friends again. It's been kind of hard. No cake for me though. Sigh. But, we are going on a short camping trip on Wednesday. Thanks for all the great wishes! Lee, I wish you could be here too, but I promise we will eventually make it to Denver/Boulder in the near future.

Sharon, I definitely do not want Kevin to cook for me - he did that last week-end and overcooked the Ahi tuna, which should have been seared instead of well-done. I think we will go to Ayara Thai Cuisine in Westchester because it is close and it is one of my favorite restaurants. I was torn between that and Japanese.

I should pick myself a bouquet of Kangaroo Paw flowers, since some of my plants got knocked down in the storm last week-end. I also have a bunch of calla lilies in the front yard that I could pick and a cymbidium in the back yard that is about to bloom.

Thanks again for the thoughts and wishes! It was otherwise a somewhat uneventful day, but I did get a nice card from my friend Julie, who forgot all about me last year on my big birthday. I should be getting together with her again soon, however. My sister sent me a package with some nice kitchen presents, and I'll try to photograph those this week-end. She's getting better at understanding what I like, and what she sent was very cute.

We did end up going to the Thai restaurant and had the Royal Golden Baskets for appetizer - one of our favorites - but they were out of the Curry Fish Cake. The baskets come empty with the fillings on the side and are perfectly bite-sized. Kevin had Pad Thai, and I had Jungle Curry with beef. I ordered that because it has Thai eggplant in it and no coconut milk. I also ordered crab fried rice because they are generous with the crab, and I didn't know that my dish came with steamed rice. We took most of the crab fried rice home with us.

The best thing about this birthday is that my Chinese curse is now over! According to a Chinese palmist, my life line supposedly ends at age 60, although he did tell me that European palms are different from Chinese, and so I might now die then. I guess I need a new reading now.

Sol, I haven't had zebra pants for many years now. I bought the last ones in Vancouver in 1982. They were made in London and in addition to black and white stripes, they had fluorescent chartreuse stripes, sort of as a shadow to the black zebra stripes. They were great at discos that had black lights, but most people in Seattle at that time weren't quite ready for them. (I stopped in Seattle on my way back to San Francisco from Vancouver that year.) I have still cow print pants that I made for myself, however. I'm a bit behind on sewing projects.

I have to say that I got my best birthday wishes here, and I thank everyone for that.
