Best way to clean carpets so my dog doesn't pee in new house...

I have a question some say dog urine was easier to get out then cat urine..
What's the best and cheapest way to do that? We just rented a house the landlord just cleaned the carpets and it doesn't smell but the old leasee we know had a dog and our dog was in the house for 5 min before she peed and she hasn't peed in the house in over a year so I want to clean the carpet good before we move in so my dog doesn't start peeing inside but I don't know whether to call a professional or if there is a cheaper way I can do them well my self...

If you let the dog pee inside, well, that's your problem. Your dog has the ability to control bladder and bowel, and already proved that for over a year. The dog must be reminded where to go to the bathroom in this completely new environment. Dogs pee on stuff to try them out. That's how they learn things. They behave a certain way, and it is either reinforced, or corrected. To simply clean the carpet and not put the dog outside for a day, is reinforcing the bad behavior. Put the dog out in the yard immediately after the next accident. That is the only way to correct the behavior.

For your dog to pee in a 'new' home isn't that unusual. My male dog would be tempted to do the same but once he knows it's not allowed (or we're living in the home) it's no longer an issue.
My current dog has never had an accident in the house, but when the carpet layers had to pull up new carpet (long story) they found a pee spot....left by my dog! They said it happens all the time with new carpet!

I think the best you can do is buy a black light and look for old stain marks, then treat them with an enzyme cleaner such as Natures Miracle or Odormute. That will give you better results than any carpet cleaner.
Accept that you may never be able to rid the house of hidden odors. If the previous dog had a problem marking the house, then there's a good chance the pad and subfloor are holding the odor.
Give your dog a short course on house training, which is something any dog going into a new household should have, and watch for and treat any areas she tends to sniff more than usual.
I don't think you'll have a long term problem if your dog was good about not going in the house.

I know this is an old post - but for any new readers who come across it (like I did) I do NOT recommend the Bissell pro Heat I have the Pet version and it's pure JUNK! I've had it 2 years and it's not used heavily (meaning I'm not using it every month) I try to scrub the carpets every 6 months - I have a hand held for spills! - It has broken down on me more times than I'd like to count 1st it stopped sucking up water, fixed that, 2nd the water tank that you put clean water into a "bladder" and the dirty water is supposed to go into the tank the bladder sits in - well it doesn't it all goes into the "bladder" (The clean water) so I have to empty it more often because it says it's full which it is but it's because it has more clean water than it picked up dirty but since it mixed together it's all dirty! - it's not supposed to do that , Third and most current issue(as of last night 2/6/18) The dispenser where you put your "shampoo" is not spraying out. I put a home made pre-treatment on before I used it (I just mixed generic oxy clean and water in a spray bottle, and soaked all the stains) I didn't have much carpet to clean in the room I cleaned but I'd say 4x4 area if that - I had to empty out the water tank 4 times! That should of not been emptied once room wasn't big enough to need to empty it out - when I was done, I took both canisters out so I could put just plain water, and do a rinse to get any left behind residue (I use LA Totally Awesome all Purpose Cleaner in mine, not any store bought rug cleaning solution) my solution was not used at all it was still 100% full , but I didn't know this until the end! However with my home made stain remover and just plain water the carpet does look a bit better! but it had nothing to do with the machine! I will go back to Hoover and Never buy another Bissell product again I swore off that brands Vacuum cleaner years ago! Yes in the after picture the carpet is still dirty but stains came almost all the way out without using any actual cleaning solution in the machine., So now I have to spray the cleaning solution all over the carpet by hand and then use the scrubber to suck it up, hopefully that'll get it the rest of the way clean

Hi Toomuchglass, Often when a male dog urintes indoors at someone else's home or his own he is trying to stake territory. This is not a house breaking issue, it is a territorial behavior issue. Let us assume he does not do this at his own home. Where does he stand in the pecking order with the other male dog? And even your female? If he is the beta, he might be trying to let your female know she is below him in the pecking order. If he is the Alpha male he is trying to let your female know that he is top dog. Keep in mind he does not know if he is here permanetly or just visiting. In his mind the pack is unstable. There is a new memeber and he wants her to know where he stands. In a wolf pack, the alpha wolf will usually be the dog that marks territory. No other wolf would have the gumption to do this unless they are going to challenge him. They know where they need to eliminate and they do this with respect. This dog does not know who is in charge and may feel he needs to be. From his perspective he is thinking... Who is top dog? Who is the boss? Where do I fit in? I don't want to loose. So lifting to mark an area is his way of saying I am part of this space. He may be setting boundaries to prevent a fight. He may not be a fighting guy but wants everyone to know this is his space. Some ideas that might help are having a crate in your home for him to enter as soon as he arrives. After 1/2 hr let him out of the crate but watch him closely as though he were a tiny puppy. Keep him on a leash attached to his owner or even you. Do not let him out of your site and if he lifts a leg. Be ready to train! As soon as he lifts a leg, shake a can with coin in it. Scream loudly. NO! And rush him outside to do his duty. If you can even mop up his pee with a paper towel and leave it outside where he can smell where he needs to go. Be loving, firm and consistent. He needs to be taught in a loving way that he is not the alpha of the space. That someone else is in charge. He needs to earn your trust which means he either needs to be closely leashed to his owner or you and slowly when he can be trusted not to lift his leg he can roam free. Never reprimand a dog for marking if you do not catch him in the act. This will only confuse him. I hope this helps. ~boxerpups

I agree that tying the dog outdoors is not the answer. Most people who start that find it easier eventually to just leave the dog out all the time (or a family member insists), then you simply have a lonely miserable dog living out his pitiful existence on the end of a rope. What's the point in that? Have to ask why you think the dog is angry? How do you know he isn't afraid, or upset, or somehow being mistreated while you are away? I highly doubt your dog is messing on the floor as an act of revenge. Also, why be against crate training? Sure it would be ideal not to have to crate but the fact is that not all dogs are able to be lose at all times. My dog is crated when I am not here, and occasionally when I am if I need to be sure he wont be under foot. He also uses his crate to sleep so even though I too WFH I can often find him snoozing in his crate with the door wide open. Dogs can and will make their crate into their personal secure space so long as it is used properly (not as punishment and not locked up for excessive amounts of time). A normal healthy dog will not usually go potty in the same place it sleeps so if given a properly sized crate you shouldn't need to worry about him going potty in the crate. And if when you open the crate up you have a leash ready to lead him right outdoor so he can immediately relive himself then you can let him in and not worry about a mess. Research crate training and give it a try. As someone upstream said it is up to you to set your dog up for success. I tend to have pretty strong feelings about people who make a commitment when they adopt a pet then dump them when they become inconvenient. I don't trust people like that. If they'll go back on their commitment to a pet they will likely do the same in other non-pet situations as well.

I'd have to reread what I quoted tomorrow about the price. IIRC, The posts were before the market got to this point, so before when she made the posts, she may have been ok with it; but now the price isn't realistic. This is where that great realtor comes in. She should have sat her down and told her that the market changed and we need to act since you need to sell. After all, her bios states she will work with the client to price the home correctly. Having a realtor that claims to have that much experience yada yada; she would be able to talk the seller into going after that buyer; after all, if you read the lowball post, some of the posters were able to change her mind. Why couldn't this experienced great realtor do that? Rereading the posts, Jellyben knew in her heart the price was too much. The realtor technically should have been able to be straight with her saying, ok we can try listing at that "old" price for a few weeks, if we have activity and no bites, then we have to revisit pricing. Our realtor said almost the same thing to us, so we knew going in; plus I read here just like jellyben does, so I know it would have to be done. I do think that the exterior photos make the house look "trumped up" and more like an artist's drawing of spec homes you see at those architectural plan websites. I think it makes the home look unrealistic and could be turning off some buyers. Exactly, which is probably misleading when you actually get to the house. This is a used house, I highly doubt the outside looks that perfect still. Jellyben How long is your contract for?

Sorry, no cleaning process will override a dog in need of training. May I suggest crate training which I have used for years with numerous dogs and with great success.

Nature's Miracle helps, a lot - full strength, and at least as much as the dog donated, so when it soaks in, it will soak further.

I have found that rosemary oil is pretty effective at keeping pets FAR away from stuff.

yes, pup will need to be taught the rules all over again, but with love and firmness, that shouldn't take long.

Refresh and disinfect the fibers of your carpet without renting a steam cleaner with the help of a simple homemade solution and a scrub brush. In a bowl or small bucket, mix one-part white vinegar with three parts water. Dip the bristles of the scrub brush into the solution and rub them into the carpet.
Only you need to be very careful, because recently I ran into a serious problem. My dog got very sick because of this. If you are wondering can carpet cleaner make my dog sick, then the answer is yes, because I myself have encountered this.
