Best Carpet cleaning method?
Comments (39)Keeping carpet clean is tough. I have found guests subtly protest against taking their shoes off.. New guests or clients are happy to take their shoes off (I'm a photographer so clients come to my home for meetings) but friends can be rude 'oh what? are you serious? you want my shoes off?' that annoys me I have 2 cats. Ugh! Pet stains = Ugh! I am a germofobe.. Well I'll kiss my kitties.. otherwise if I was THAT much a germafobe I wouldn't have cats.. but one of them has a thyroid disorder and sometimes the poor little guy vomits. My mistake has been spending a lot of money testing different carpet cleaning products, and a lot of the time sponging the carpet clean with such products would create a bigger mess or spread the stain! Ikea sell $15 metre square colorful rugs. I bought 6.. black, red, pink, yellow, green, blue when they are laid next to eachother it looks like one big rug, and this has helped a lot. Its so easy to wash one rug when a cat pukes, than it is to wash the actual carpet I have discovered that Vinegar is a bit of a miracle washer! If I clean the cat vomit with vinegar I get better results than ANY product from the shelves. I recently didn't realise that a lemon fell from my shopping bag behind a polyester ikea crate full of clothes, and the lemon had developed that dusty black mould and the mould dropped to the carpet It vaccumed up easily but I washed that part of the carpet by hand with cloudy ammonia. I read online that ammonia kills germs like mould. I seem to have made a big water stain though which I'm annoyed about I paid a local carpet cleaner guy $100 which was a bargain for a 2 room clean of a 1 bedroom apartment. The people I hired last year charged me $140 as they wanted extra money to come up one flight of stairs. This man was lovely. Even though I vac twice a week and mop almost daily, his industrial machine got up 2 large handfuls of cat hair!!! He said the minute I told him I had pets over the phone, he brought his special equipment. Unfortunately I messed up the carpet where I used the cloudy ammonia. There's just some darker markings like water staining, so I'm trying the watered down laundry soap routine this time...See MoreBest way to clean carpets so my dog doesn't pee in new house...
Comments (5)For your dog to pee in a 'new' home isn't that unusual. My male dog would be tempted to do the same but once he knows it's not allowed (or we're living in the home) it's no longer an issue. My current dog has never had an accident in the house, but when the carpet layers had to pull up new carpet (long story) they found a pee spot....left by my dog! They said it happens all the time with new carpet! I think the best you can do is buy a black light and look for old stain marks, then treat them with an enzyme cleaner such as Natures Miracle or Odormute. That will give you better results than any carpet cleaner. Accept that you may never be able to rid the house of hidden odors. If the previous dog had a problem marking the house, then there's a good chance the pad and subfloor are holding the odor. Give your dog a short course on house training, which is something any dog going into a new household should have, and watch for and treat any areas she tends to sniff more than usual. I don't think you'll have a long term problem if your dog was good about not going in the house. Comments (57)After reading the posts, I had already tried Sprayway, Stainless Steel Magic, Mr Clean Erasers(once), vinegar and water. But never Pledge. As I only had the orange Pledge I thought what the ****, I'll try it. I used the Micro Fiber towel ( Yes the ones from Costco for cars). It was wonderful and quick. My French Door frig, my dishwasher and range look great and all in five minutes. I call my husband Shrek as he never thinks about using the handles, but now I have a quick fix. Thanks to those that suggested it....See MoreLooking to have my carpet cleaned ...but....
Comments (30)I don't care for NextDoor recommendations either. Too often it's friends pushing their friend's or neighbor's businesses. I have good luck with Yelp. You do have read the reviews carefully and look between the lines. Like many review sites the negative reviews can give you a lot of insight also. Many times they end up putting the business in a more positive light when you see what the crankiness is about. I found a great plumber, a family run appliance repair and an excellent drywall guy though Yelp. Before we pulled our carpet I was going to use a carpet guy from there. Very eccentric in the reviews but meticulous to a tee. Many people trust the big companies with the big advertising budgets. However one must consider that their employees come from all walks of life, with varying experience and are working for a paycheck not their companies reputation. The sole proprietor in skilled service work has more to lose, often really knows the in and outs of his craft, has years of experience or apprenticeship and gives better, more personal customer service. But I come from a standpoint of knowing how to do many things. Hiring it out for us is more related to aging and no longer wanting to do some things ourselves. I can hire a good worker by understanding the job I want done enough to know what I want. I also know to leave them be and do their job without interference once the decision has been made to use them. You read the contract and/or ask questions to be sure you understand what they will do or not do before hand. Not afterwards. We recently delayed a fence being built because the grade of wood and an additional post was verbally mentioned but omitted in the written quote. Once that was done we signed them off on them doing the work which they did well and professionally....See Moreandalee
