Male dog ONLY pees in my house !

My son brings his 2 male dogs over , and one of them has started lifting his leg in my house. My son & Girlfriend are totally embarrassed and says he doesn't do that anywhere else. He's never even done it in their house . He's 4 & neutered, my dog is a female , 8 and spayed.They get along good. Why does he do this ? He did it right in front of us the first time - we yelled and he stopped. The last time he was here , after he left I found 2 wet spots on the kitchen throw rug. I can't figure it out . Why only my house ?

**Edited to add - my house is clean except for dog hair
( naturally ) no other pee spots anywhere else.

Hi Toomuchglass,

Often when a male dog urintes indoors at someone else's
home or his own he is trying to stake territory. This is
not a house breaking issue, it is a territorial behavior
issue. Let us assume he does not do this at his own home.

Where does he stand in the pecking order with the other
male dog? And even your female?

If he is the beta, he might be trying to let your female
know she is below him in the pecking order. If he is the
Alpha male he is trying to let your female know
that he is top dog. Keep in mind he does not know if he
is here permanetly or just visiting. In his mind the
pack is unstable. There is a new memeber and he wants her
to know where he stands.

In a wolf pack, the alpha wolf will usually be the dog
that marks territory. No other wolf would have the
gumption to do this unless they are going to challenge him.
They know where they need to eliminate and they do this
with respect. This dog does not know who is in charge and
may feel he needs to be.

From his perspective he is thinking... Who is top dog?
Who is the boss? Where do I fit in? I don't want to loose.
So lifting to mark an area is his way of saying I am part
of this space. He may be setting boundaries to prevent a
fight. He may not be a fighting guy but wants everyone to
know this is his space.

Some ideas that might help are having a crate in your home
for him to enter as soon as he arrives. After 1/2 hr let him
out of the crate but watch him closely as though he were
a tiny puppy. Keep him on a leash attached to his owner
or even you. Do not let him out of your site and if he
lifts a leg. Be ready to train! As soon as he lifts
a leg, shake a can with coin in it. Scream loudly. NO! And
rush him outside to do his duty. If you can even mop up
his pee with a paper towel and leave it outside where he
can smell where he needs to go.

Be loving, firm and consistent. He needs to be taught in a
loving way that he is not the alpha of the space. That
someone else is in charge.

He needs to earn your trust which means he either needs to
be closely leashed to his owner or you and slowly when he
can be trusted not to lift his leg he can roam free.
Never reprimand a dog for marking if you do not catch him
in the act. This will only confuse him.

That makes so much sense. When our dogs get together , he's the biggest one and he seems to take over the house as soon as he walks in . My son's other dog is so passive ,he just stays in the backround. My dog is small & shy , but she'll snap and lunge at him when he steals her toys .(It's actually funny to watch ) Maybe that's his way of letting her know that she should leave him alone. I'm thinking of all the little scuffles they've gotten into - everything is falling in place now.I can see why .I'm so glad I asked -- thank you so much for helping me figure it out :)

He has been walked regularly since he came home, if not daily then at least 3-5 times per week. I have three children and he (our dog) is very much a part of our family. He comes to pick up the kids from school, to the park with us when they play, for long walks with the baby in her stroller while the older two are at school. Because of his anxiety, we did work with a trainer when we first got him, and worked with her extensively. Not on this particular issue, but in general, we have worked with multiple trainers actually.... in addition to the animal behaviorist, we also saw someone because he had issues with people coming into our home, and he has also been through beginner, intermediate, and advanced obedience training, as well as receiving his canine good citizen award. Like I said, our dog is a major part of our family and he participates in almost everything we do together. Yes, he does hate his crate, no doubt. But unfortunately for him he has seperaxion anxiety (and he is on meds for it)and if he isn't in his crate when we leave he chews the furniture, knocks over the garbages, and basically destroys what he can do to his anxiety. So hate it though he does, he is also used to it. I understand thinking its cruel to crate him when he needs to go... but that is exactly what one does with a puppy when they are 'crate training' them not to go in the house. I am taking him where I want him to go and giving him ample opportunity to relieve himself before putting him back in for a short time and trying it again. I dont understand saying I am 'not allowing him to go to the bathroom'. Would you say the same to someone who crates their dog because their dog constantly goes in the house? Likely not. This is really no different. I am simply trying to teach him to go somewhere else (other than the yard) and using a method that is pretty standard for housetraining puppies. I don't see how I am not allowing him to go to the bathroom. I am taking him where I want him to eliminate and giving him plenty of time and opportunity to do so. I came here hoping to get some helpful suggestions for how to show him its OK to pee somewhere else, and instead I am being called cruel for not allowing my dog to pee. Seems a bit odd to me...I am not a first time dog owner, I have had dogs for 25 years and have worked with animals in some capacity for a good portion of those years as well. I can guarantee that I am not cruel to any of my animals.

For a bit of claification, marking and potty training are two different thing - behaviorally speaking. our dog feels his is the alpha male or boss of your household, and his marking anything new means he is claiming that thing. To stop your dog from marking is going to take a bit of work. First while your dog is in the house, he needs to be under control. This means to either leash him to you while you are going about your business or blocking him from the area where the carpet is. Given the opportunity, your dog WILL mark the carpet and anything new in his domain, including people. So, you need to change his idea of where he is in the heirarchy of your household. To do this you need to change his potty habits since they are directly related to the problem you are experiencing. First you need to stop letting your dog tell you when he needs to go, and stop just letting him outside to do his business. He needs structure, going on on a leash with a choke collar everyday 3 times a day at the same time for at least 20 minutes a walk. The walk needs to have him not sniffing at every and marking at every blade of grass. When I take a dog like this out, I give him 3 to 5 minutes before I start the walk to sniff, pee and poo, then we walk. The dog walks at my side and we walk at a pretty good clip. The dog gets to pee when I pick the place, not the dog. Just before Im finished with the walk, the dog has another opportunity to do his business. When the dog is in the act of going, he gets a command to do whichever business I need him to do and gets rewarded for doing it by my praising him. I make a big deal about it. Like if the dog found a bag with 100 dollars bills filling it. This way my dog can pee or poo on command and knows that is what we are there for. There is nothing mean about this, it is absolutely the correct thing to do in order to get a handle on your dogs behavior. Let me tell you up front your dog WILL RESIST this training and may throw a tantrum or two each time you take him out. It is common to expect your dog to put the brakes on and not want to walk at all. or to try and pull you to where he wants to go etc. Until you get a handle on his behavior you can use a number of tricks to help keep your dogs marking under more control. You can use a spray dog repellant on or near the carpet - Spray a towel then put the towel down near the carpet on another dry towel, you can use one of those office floor mats which go under an office chair to protect the floor, only place it with the plastic nubs normall stuck in the carpet facing upwards which will make walking on it unpleasant for your dog. The very last thing I recommend is a belly band, which I do NOT recommend for long time or permanent use. Good luck

I am no expert, but I have dealt with this before. This is my very humble opinion:) I think you are having an issue of jealousy. Did this start after the puppy became the center of attention? I know it sounds crazy, but I have had two friends and myself deal with this years ago. They are trying to get your, and your daughter's attention. It may not even be the younger dog that is initiating the jealousy. Do you leave them during the day? Are they alone maybe? One of my friends had a dog that started doing this and other horrible acts when he married. This dog had been his owners (alone) for many years, with no evil wife around:) The dog would tear up anything that was left down that smelled like the new wife. Kinda funny if you think about it, but not if you are experiencing it. This dog died of old age, but was never trained to stop the behavior. It was actually very sad.

My 'got to pee" pooch is a product of two blue merles mating. He has anatomical issues along his throat . His exam showed that the orbits would not support the surgery. His third membrane advances and recedes on both eyes but the left is more severe. The vet said that a surgical repair can be done but will fail shortly after due to the eye shape itself. I was told the membrane will just advance again. He enjoys running around the fenced in yard and also in the fields. We just installed an inground pool this summer. He loved the pool. Since his vision is compromised the pool gave him a security cause he could only go the perimeter of the pool. I purposely installed a swim out ledge for the dogs. He was a calmer dog once he got a chance to swim. When we covered it for the winter, I showed him the change and he has not stepped out on the pool . He is a sweetheart but this peeing has got to stop. He has learned hand signals for sit, come, No, bathroom and just starting to get stay. I had used the come signal and placed him immediately in his kennel that he thought oh I got to go into my kennel . Confused him when the kennel was not around. I let the other dogs out to pee before him which helps stop the marking. When we are out playing he needs to mark on the female when she relieves herself. No doubt they are keeping me in shape but the winter has arrived and i can no longer hose the dogs down. How do I teach him not to mark on my clothes and the female dog. I guess tether him on a shorter lead. I can not give praise vocally and touch can be misconstrued. SInce he is truly deaf his other senses are more keen. He finds the moles in one second and he alerts me to thunder a good thirty minutes before the storm arrives. I hate the smell of pee. I am no mother theresa. I just knew I had the patience and the pack to give him a good life.
