My mother once fused a significant amount of Tupperware to her oven rack when she forgot to check!!

That SD Beet Bread sounds interesting. How about a recipe?

I will try making the beet bread again when I get some more beets. Will post the recipe when I actually make a loaf. Not sure if it's a good idea to share anything when I only have a half-baked red dough sitting on my counter! LOL

Oh no, sounds like you had the day I flung away last week. I ended up mopping the floor three times!

When I was dating DH I made him a birthday cake. At the time I was sharing a house with two other girls who had marauding cats who could get into any cupboard and we didn't have a big cake box or plastic wrap, so I put it in the oven for safekeeping. I figured it would be OK because the other two girls didn't cook much. Imagine my horror when DH and I came home from a date to find one of the other girls had got a wild hair to bake something and had put the oven on the preheat! Fortunately it hadn't been on too long; the icing melted and ran down the sides sealing the cake to the plate and inadvertently keeping it very fresh for a few days!

LOL Bean and Colleen! Don't we all have moments like that?! Amazing how we didn't get turned off by mishaps as such. In fact, I am more determined to make the same beet bread than ever. Will have to get a few more beets then bake to my heart's content! :-) Al

I'm still having that kind of day. My chili came out too runny. Ah well, still tastes good. :)

Oh my... It really hurts with you HAVE to toss something out... But there is something much worse... When you have a day when everything you try to make comes out so bad you can't eat it... What's even worse is when you have 3 or 4 days in a row like that...

Oh my, it's happened to all of us. Some days I just feel like I'm cursed in the kitchen and have to just leave and go back again some other time. Sometimes I forget that it happens to other people, so I like threads like this!

My most recent stunt a few days ago was to re-bake half a box of Kripsy Kreme donuts. I preheated the oven to bake a chicken. 20 minutes later I smelled something. The donuts weren't burned, but all the icing melted off and that rendered them inedible. They went straight in the trash... didn't need them anyway ;o)

So, how DID the cupcakes turn out?

Al I hope your cupcakes turned out all right! I'm sorry to hear about your bread and the plastic wrap. It must have been heartbreaking when you were so looking forward to it.

I also had a beet juice mishap this morning. My new fridge is really too small for all the stuff that I want to keep in it, so things are piled up on top of each other.
The salad we were going to have for lunch today took on a life of its own, jumping out to land on the floor, upside down splashing beet juice all over.
So I swept it up for compost and washed the floor.

Yesterday I saw that we have another baby alligator-sized lizard living under the fridge. He came out to say hello and frightened me to death. I thought we caught him the other day and put him outside, but this must have been his twin brother living under the fridge where the warmth of the motor has kept him comfortable. My cleaning girl managed to catch him in a wastebasket and put him on a tiled roof outside. Hopefully he wasn't one of triplets!

Rita, I hear ya. I hate throwing food out too, especially something I tried so hard to prepare.

Vacuum, I didn't know you could re-bake iced donuts?! :-) Oh the cupcakes turned out great! They were for the kids so I piped whipped cream in the center for a surprise then covered the cupcakes with chocolate icing, topped with a dinosaur cracker and some sugary dinosaur sprinkles. The kids all seemed to like the little treat. :-)

For years and years, we always kept one of those clear plastic splatter-domes in the microwave. We stored it in there because just about everything we heated in the microwave would be covered with the dome anyway.

A few years ago, we moved into our new house and one of our shiny new appliances is a convection-microwave. I continued to store the plastic dome in the microwave, but then, upon preheating the microwave for convection bake, I opened the door to find a puddle of melted plastic in the center of the glass turntable.

Even worse...I ended up going through 3 of those plastic domes until finally throwing in the towel.

Al, I'm glad the cupcakes came out well. I think sprinkles fix nearly anything anyway, if it's for kids!

I find myself "heating" things all the time, but seldom at home, usually at Elery's, at Amanda's or at Mother's. For some reason they all keep pans in their oven when they aren't using the oven. Elery's has the big half sheet baking pans, Amanda and Mother keep sheet pans AND frying pans in theirs.

So I turn on the oven and smell something, then remove the pans, I just can't wrap my head around oven as storage!

Annie, I know tons of people who store pans in their oven. I also just do not get it.
The biggest disaster (lately) that I have created is to try to make a batch of bread that makes two loaves in my breadmaker. (Annie's maple oatmeal bread). Well, I never gave it any thought, but when the cycle beeped and I went to get it out to shape and bake, there was yeasty dough all over the counter, the floor, in the bottom of the breadmaker...yikes! We had to take the breadmaker and use a spray hose from the kitchen faucet to clean it out. Didn't know if spraying that water in it would hurt it or not, but I managed to make bread in it yesterday and it worked just fine. But what a mess to clean up!

Annie...in my case the oven is the only place to store my pans since it's the biggest spot in the kitchen that isn't full. I keep three frying pans and a grill pan in there.
Otherwise I'd have to store them in the middle of the kitchen floor or outside in the garden shed. LOL.

I apologize for questioning keeping pans in the oven. It truly just did not occur to me that it was a space issue. We definitely do not want your pans on the kitchen floor!

Storing pans in the oven reminds me of my grandmother. They built a new house later in life and had a dishwasher. She didn't care for the dishwasher, so she stored food in it. (Sure do miss her!)

Sharon, I'm certainly not questioning the keeping of pans in the oven, Elery doesn't have a cabinet tall enough to keep those big half sheet pans and Amanda has almost no cupboard space, so it makes sense to use space that's not being utilized for baking. Elery very seldom bakes, although Amanda does so she always has to take all her stuff out. I just can't remember that they use the oven for storage, it's just something that never dawns on me until I'm reminded by the smell, because I use my oven so often for baking.

And now that I think about it, my stepmom does it too, but hers are usually dirty pans!

Pans in oven: I have lots of space but the problem is I have more pans than space so my oven is used for storage.

Ouch Linda C! I could cry over those rolls!

I don't store any pots and pans in the oven because I use it at least once a day. There are days (like today) my oven is on ALL DAY long. It would be too big a pain to have to move them in and out every time I cook.

By the way, my kitchen goblin is good to me today. Made the entire birthday meal without a spill! Phew!
