I've been thinking more of this, and I think I can get her DH to go along. Since we've not really ever done anything for mom on her birthday, she would easily buy it that he's taking her to the casino to celebrate. They go frequently, and he can say they're going to meet his brother & his wife. She'd totally buy this scenario. Then I can do an open house at the club house. I figured I can supply the main dish (something simple) and non-alcoholic beverages. Everyone else (family) can pitch in with food stuffs, too, and I know that the people in her park will be happy to pitch in with pot luck. If my mom doesn't know that family is going to be there (including me) she'll absolutely love it. Our family has a tendency to do surprises of unexpected family at events and it's well received. My primary concern now is trying to find lodging for everyone...since virtually all family will be from out of town. I think this could be a blast for mom, and she wouldn't mind people knowing her real age. It would tickle her because her peers are ancient (looks & energy wise) compared to her. She loves to be the center of attention, so I think she'd really like this.

Yes, 4. It's hard for me to believe too. (sigh) The older I get, the faster the time goes, it seems, funny how Chase and I have that in common. (grin) Sharon, I thought about selling cakes, then decided that I really just want to play with flour and fondant. I want to see a picture or think of something and make that, and I don't want to deal with some spoiled bride complaining that a ruffle is 1/16th of an inch lower on one side so she doesn't have to pay me. I've had a couple of people ask right after I made the birch bark wedding cake, but decided I just don't want to deal with the inevitable hassle, or the problems with transporting and setting up some of those elaborate concoctions. Coconut, I'm glad to see you here! Yes, Makayla is a big help, and she's far more artistic than I am, so she's good at things like painting gold lustre dust on those mermaid tails and making fondant seaweed. When the kids get those ideas, though, I don't hesitate to say "I can't do that". They promptly come up with something else. And if I try it and it doesn't work, I do something else and they're always fine with it. It's cake, after all... Ellen, cake and buttercream frosting and fondant and M&Ms and ice cream. Yeah. It's their parents' problem. (snicker) Cindy Mac, Maci is adorable in appearance, she's fierce in behavior, trust me. She's the youngest and the loudest of all the grandkids. Dcarch, they did indeed, eat cake. No leftovers for me to deal with, double bonus. Colleen, a lot of my cakes are your chocolate cake recipe, the texture is "right" for holding up decorations! Kathy, your Beau/Lily must be getting nearly as big as Makayla. It's hard to believe. Annie

Thanks, everyone, they did taste good, even if they didn't look like I expected. Maybe I should have cut vents in the top.... FOAS, I'm happy to see you here again, don't wait too long to come back. I'll tell Mom that everyone on the Cooking Forum says "Happy Birthday". She asks about you often, and wonders if I ever see or talk to you still. I assure her I do. She met Sherry and Peppi at the Food and Wine Show in Grand Rapids, and she met Peppi's Dad and Kim and Nancy when Elery and I got married and I think she met Cathy too. So, she feels like she knows you, I've talked about everyone so much. Sol, she lives close to Mt. Pleasant, as you know, so she says you are her neighbor. She is praying for your family in Cuba too, and hoping you hear from your own Mom soon. Annie

Sleevendog, the wonderful thing about belated Birthday well-wishes is that they extend the happiness : ) And thank you both (Islay, too) for the Charcuterie Definition. I didn’t know the French pronunciation, but doubt I’ll use it here, or even the word charcuterie. Most here would think me pretentious, which is silly as I like to use words correctly. So, does this mean if I make canadian bacon or pastrami (from pork), I can (temporarily) call myself a Charcutier? LOL! Well, I just might anyway! Sleevendog, thank you also for mentioning the free-edge/live-edge board. That was my gift to myself : ) I think it’s so beautiful! I often toss together a board (the bread board above was from an old restaurant, the charcuterie with live edge from Etsy) of cheeses, crackers, meats, apples, grapes… whatever I have on hand, for pre-dinner snacking, or lunch nibbling. I wanted a larger, prettier board than the bread board : ) Funny thing is, when I bought my first furniture, the area in which I lived had tons of furniture with free-edging/live edging (horizontal slice tree trunks, vertical slabs). And they were cheap! And huge! I bought a large one for my coffee table on a major budget. New! After a while, the area was over-saturated with them, and I couldn’t give mine away when upgrading. Truth! So when they first came out, it took me a while to not see them as ‘cheap’ stuff! I have learned a new appreciation… everything old is new again : ) I think it looks both rustic and fine, simultaneously. I am a wood grain lover. And while I have your attention, those flageolet beans? Amazing. We can’t stop eating them on salads. I’m making some with leftover too-salty ribs, shredded, and roasted tomatoes next. Mercurygirl, you sound like me, I’ve moved several plants, including roses. Hard to keep up with where they are until they leaf out or bloom! Naturegirl, you are most welcome! Edie, I have one of those rolling pins! So heavy! I am sure you can roll it out thin enough. I would recommend a few things… if using crackers for cheeses, don’t add cheese to the cracker dough, just make them as is, and perhaps toss in some dried herbs (the flavor of dried herbs does come through) as appropriate. If serving with a soup, or alone, cheese tastes wonderful : ) Annie, don’t do what I did, though, and over prep/cook! I was feeling a bit frazzled by the time the day rolled around! But yes, making lots of nibbles satisfies everyone. And they can be easy ones. BTW, your hummus was wonderful! Thank you! I froze some, and hope that’s ok.

Thanks so much everyone!

My wife and kids were gone yesterday on another mission, but last night some friends took me out to Legal Seafoods where I had a really nice paella. I've been meaning to make one ever since Ann and Sharon posted pictures in the recent Spanish food thread, but I figure this one will probably satisfy the craving for a bit.

My kids were super excited for my birthday this morning and at one point my son declared it the best birthday ever. Um, we were watching TV, LOL! It was sweet. But I sent them off again as unfortunately I have to work today. It's rare for me to have to work on a weekend, but of course it had to be this one, oh well.

My wife is out shopping present(s) which are either really complicated or else she can't find because it's been several hours. So it's quiet over here and I've been really enjoying hitting "refresh" on this thread periodically and seeing the new messages.

Tonight we get together with my parents and sister for the obligatory Sauerbraten meal. It would probably break my mom's heart to request anything different, but the truth is it doesn't matter because I love it and always look forward to it. So that's about it from my end.

Thanks again, and a special thanks to Jessica who does her job so well that she wasn't thrown off by the generic Jan 1 date on my profile!
