Hmmm...I see your point. I guess it depends on how long the hinges are. On my current fridge the hinges are 6.75" long but vary in height from 0.5" to 1". My upper cab cut-out is 70" high. The fridge's cabinet space is 24" deep. It might work. Perhaps a bigger issue is that this unit doesn't seem to get very good reviews, at least on the ajmadison site. I will search this forum to see if there is better experience. I was leaning toward a Jenn Air because folks on this forum seem to give good reviews to their Jenn Air CD FD fridges. Actually, there is also an LG model that would work for me, but I'm a bit scared off of LG due to people's experiences here.

We just purchased the KA FD Counterdepth refrigerator as part of our kitchen remodel & because our basement fridge died this summer. We moved the Maytag Performa (stainless) to the basement -- standard depth (presumably made by same company as Kitchen Aid). We've had it 5 weeks and are very happy. We got the inside water since in-the-door ice & water seemed to take up so much space. We had a large Brita tank in the Maytag so are ok without ice/water in the door & knew we were getting a little less space with the counterdepth. To date the KA is nice & quiet. The Maytag had a fairly bad vibration we had been unable to correct (didn't spend tons of time on it and could have been impacted by being on a ceramic tile floor (Kitchen Aid is on the same floor since we have not begun our remodel, yet) -- perhaps it was on a crack -- perhaps the water tank made it uneven when full -- also did not analyze too much). Additionally, the Maytag icemaker seemed to be noisy & would get caught in a weird mode making grinding sounds. I also like the door alarm and digital controls. It is good for all of us to have the alarm reminder & probably needed with the french door apparatus since at times they don't close all the way. One item you may check between your choices is how easy it is to get the veggie/fruit drawers out for cleaning. It appears to me that the range that the French doors open makes me have to maneuver the drawers to get in & out. Perhaps I didn't do it quite right, but that it is a little inconvenient. The rails are nice & seem higher tech than the Maytag. (We also have had to reorder & replace some drawer items on the Maytag that broke since they were plastic and broke.) For those interested in the transition to a counter depth we are happy thus far. I love being able to open the doors & seen almost everything in the fridge. Of course we do have a second refrigerator & can't imagine having a counterdepth without the 2nd fridge. I was always opening second (& sometimes 3rd) jars of olives, pickles or mustard that got "lost" in the back. I like the skinny "deli" drawer in the middle, but have lost my "shelf" to set things on as I moved things in & out of the refrigerator. Every once in a while my heart sinks when I pull out a veggie or fruit drawer & they don't come out as far as I think they should. I hope this helps.

As Divamum noted- I am amazed at the change in quality of life for our whole family. We went from tiny horrible nasty 1920's kitchen (fridge blocked a doorway, no counter space, stove blocked doorway, no vent....) to a marvelous kitchen that has the perfect feel. We captured 1920's charm with modern convenience. The space is so functional now- so much counterspace that it doesn't matter if there's a mess, there's still plenty of room. There's better lighting, more room all over. Not to mention a Wolf range that is amazing and a nice new fridge (Thermador freedom). Nothing hides in the back, nothing freezes in the fridge. We have this marvelous invention that is called a "dishwasher". My whole adult life I'VE been the dishwasher... On top of the function, there is beautiful soapstone that goes without oiling for months, and a beautiful floor of checkered marmoleum. Most of all, the function and space have now set me free to cook with my kids and throw dinners together after a long day out at work. We did tons of holiday baking and used cookie cutters for the first time (never had a clean enough, roomy enough kitchen to take that sort of time and care). The sheer space and pleasantness make the kitchen a focus for lots of living and entertainment. I'll also note the little desk we worked in to the side corner allows my husband or I to work late, but still be with family, and/or allows my daughter to do crafts galore. I knew I was yearning for a new kitchen, but I never thought it could make this kind of difference.

Regarding the wider drawers and 1 pull vs. 2 - I personally don’t like 2 pulls on a drawer, because people tend to pull on just one, instead of grasping both pulls equally. Since that pull is to the side, i.e., not centered the way 1 pull would be, either the pull starts coming loose over time, or the drawer gets out of plumb from people pulling just on one side instead of both sides equally. I also believe that the pull size should vary according to the width of the drawer. The rough rule of thumb is that if using a single pull per drawer, the pull should be approximately one-third the width of the drawer. I feel that in your second pic, that pull looks too wide for that drawer. In your 3rd pic you posted, the drawers appear wider than the drawers in the 2nd pic. It's JMHO, but you should get smaller pulls for narrower drawers, and wider pulls for wider drawers. I would have the pulls be horizontal on the drawers, and vertical on the doors. I would center the pulls that are horizontal.
