What Do You Like Best About Your Apartment?
Comments (16)I sold my manufactured home this past December and moved to an apartment in January. I had owned two manufactured homes over ten years but became tired of mowing the lawn and shoveling snow in winter. Now I am in a ground floor one-bedroom end unit apartment. It has a really nice den area with a large south facing window. There is plenty of green space and there are trees outside my unit, then a freeway and beyond that more woodland. There is a rail/trail at the bottom of the hill which extends into the woods and the other end into town. Just this morning I took a long walk in the woods and it was wonderful! With regard to noise; I do hear some of my upstairs neighbor's activity in his kitchen and bathroom from time to time, but I have never heard blaring stereos or TVs. Other than that, it is very quiet here. Since this is an end unit, I only have two neighbors attached to my unit; one upstairs and one behind my unit. Below me is a maintenance/storage area used by the maintenance staff. Since this is a college town, there are plenty of students in this and just about all other complexes in the area. It seems that most here are graduate students, though there is a mix of ages as I have seen middle age people like myself and some senior citizens as well. The kitchen is small, but adequate for my needs, but I especially like the den as it is almost like a sun room because of the south facing window. This makes my unit very bright. The other side of the building faces the parking lot and those units never see the sun. I am only 2.5 miles from work and can either walk or ride my bike into work when the weather is nice. I have done this all of this past week and it is great. I could not do that from where I lived before. With gas prices going out of sight, this is great! I am more and more happy with my move....See Morewhat do you not like about your relatively new ka fridge?
Comments (2)Mine is about 5 years old. Black leatherette (haha) finish. It's true that it doesn't show regular fingerprints. It's very nice. Glass pullout shelves (that I didn't notice until I tried cleaning them), the works. It came with my house. I'll be replacing it, probably with another KA, but only because it doesn't match the remodeled kitchen. O, and it's a 33" side-by-side standard depth and we have a space for a 36" counter depth. So, what I don't like about it is that it's a SxS and the wrong size and color--nothing that should really count against it. Nice fit and finish, good performance....See MoreWhat do you NOT like about your house?
Comments (77)We built our dream home about 4-1/2 years ago and for the most part, I love it. The location is fantastic with 3 acres of land and farm fields across the street and on one side, and a wide area of brush that separates us from another house on the other side, as well as a creek at the back. We have trees surrounding us on all sides but one, so we love that. When we built, we left off the screened porch that we really wanted since we couldn't know how the budget would fare by the end of the build. All we had was a tiny little landing outside the breakfast room sliders. We have since added the screened porch and deck and that has been the best money we have spent. We have eaten almost every summer meal on the porch, it's great for entertaining and so peaceful to relax there with a good book or magazine. We even have a daybed there so it's perfect for napping as well. But with all that, it is still not perfect. I don't know that there is a perfect house, really. But there are a few things things that I would like to change. One is easily remedied: I would have liked the master closets to be a tad larger, and since they're not, I would like to have "barn doors" put on instead of regular swinging doors to give us back the room that the door swing takes up. (A very minor job, but it just hasn't been done yet.) Another is not so easy to fix. We have a large L-shaped kitchen island (which I do love), but I would love it more if it could be moved over just 12". In the one corner is the location of the refrigerator and pantry, the drawer with the utensils and below that, the drawer with the dishes, and across thet aisle is the coffee pot with mugs above. So it is a very busy area and it would be nice if there were just a few more inches to move around in since everyone seems to be in that area all the time! I've tried to think of how we could rearrange things since it would be very expensive to move the island (due to the hardwood not being under the island), and it really is set up as it needs to be. We can live with it, but it would have been nicer with those extra inches! I would also like to finish the basement. I'm very thankful that we have a basement, especially during tornado weather, but when we're down there during a warning, there is no bathroom, so if we need to use it, we have to go upstairs. It would also be nice to have another bedroom for visitors. Another thing I'd like to change is that the staircase to the upstairs is carpeted. I would really like it if someday we put hardwood on the stairs and then added a runner. I love that look. I don't hate our carpet, and I really don't mind it in the bedrooms since it is warm on your feet and keeps things quieter, but I'd prefer the hardwood/runner for the stairs. The one major negative about the house is that all the bedrooms are upstairs. I'm happy with that in most ways, but when we are older, or if we wanted to be able to have our elderly parents live with us, there are a lot of stairs to climb. I wish I had taken the time before building to revise the design to either already have one first floor bedroom with an en suite bathroom, or have the option to easily renovate to accomplish this down the road. As it is, it can be done, but not easily or inexpensively. And since I'm dreaming of perfection, it would have been nice to have the money to have installed good composite decking so our porches wouldn't show as much wear as they do, or ideally, have the money to hire someone to re-do the wood porch decks since I do prefer real wood. I guess we should start playing the lottery, too! Oh, I also want to add a shed someday. I don't think I'm ever satisfied! I should just appreciate all I have while I have it, and not look for perfection!...See MoreAnother dishwasher request - what do you like/dislike about yours?
Comments (23)Drying issues with Bosch and other European dishwashers is generally caused by user error. Yes, they won't dry as well as the old Hobart KitchenAids with forced air, as there still might be some water drops on plastics, but they should do the job for 95% of people when used correctly. Based on the age of your KA it would have the Whirlpool Powerclean module in it. This was one of the best dishwasher pumps ever made. Great water pressure, powerful grinder, reliable. Unfortunately that is no longer being made and the new KA's, while certainly not the worst dishwasher on the market, aren't what they once were. It's very important that you go to the store and check out the racking of all these dishwashers. That's a great way to eliminate ones that you know won't work for you. For example, many European dishwashers have more tightly packed tines that can create an issue with some dishes. If the interior works for you, and service is available in your area, my top pick for a new DW would be Miele. The nice thing about them is that the models differ only in features and noise level - they are all the same quality. Knowing this, I bought the cheapest one with the cutlery rack for $1000, which is competitive with Bosch, KA, etc. I like how quiet it is, even though it is the loudest model they make. I like how well it cleans despite the noise level. I like how well-built it feels, and I like how simple it is to use and that it has front controls, so I always know when it's running and how much time is left in the cycle. The only things I don't like about it are that if it breaks down later on, I probably won't be able to fix it myself, I will have to use Miele authorized repair people only, and I'll have to pay high prices for parts. Miele dishwashers can be connected to a cold water line, and the higher end models have a special glassware cycle that is designed for use with the cold water hookup. It will give you the perfect water temp for washing your wine glasses....See Moresnarkyinla
