What Do You Know About The KA Architect II FD Fridges?

We're trying to pin down a fridge for our new house, and could use some input on one of the candidates. We are looking at 36" standard depth FD fridges with water and ice through the door in SS.

Electrolux and KA seem to be the only makes left with real stainless steel sides on their SS fridges, other than the really high end stuff. We would like your opinions on the current KA Architect II models. If you have one, what do you like about it, and what do you wish was different? Have you had any service issues/problems?

And if you know, does LG make these units for Whirlpool/Kitchenaid? The in-the-door ice maker looks a lot like LG's version.

I can't really help but no one has replied so I'll offer what I can. I've not been actively looking for a new fridge. My GE is only 7 years old but the wrong color and sticks out like a sore thumb. I'd like to have a black one. I've been watching threads on refrigerators and even put out a feeler the other day titled "what don't you like about your 5 yo (or less) KA fridge". Most of the replies were positive. This reflects what I've been reading. My range is KA (probably wouldn't do that again), my dw is KA...love it, and I like what I'm reading about their refrigerators.

We just purchased the KA FD Counterdepth refrigerator as part of our kitchen remodel & because our basement fridge died this summer. We moved the Maytag Performa (stainless) to the basement -- standard depth (presumably made by same company as Kitchen Aid). We've had it 5 weeks and are very happy. We got the inside water since in-the-door ice & water seemed to take up so much space. We had a large Brita tank in the Maytag so are ok without ice/water in the door & knew we were getting a little less space with the counterdepth.

To date the KA is nice & quiet. The Maytag had a fairly bad vibration we had been unable to correct (didn't spend tons of time on it and could have been impacted by being on a ceramic tile floor (Kitchen Aid is on the same floor since we have not begun our remodel, yet) -- perhaps it was on a crack -- perhaps the water tank made it uneven when full -- also did not analyze too much). Additionally, the Maytag icemaker seemed to be noisy & would get caught in a weird mode making grinding sounds.

I also like the door alarm and digital controls. It is good for all of us to have the alarm reminder & probably needed with the french door apparatus since at times they don't close all the way. One item you may check between your choices is how easy it is to get the veggie/fruit drawers out for cleaning. It appears to me that the range that the French doors open makes me have to maneuver the drawers to get in & out. Perhaps I didn't do it quite right, but that it is a little inconvenient. The rails are nice & seem higher tech than the Maytag. (We also have had to reorder & replace some drawer items on the Maytag that broke since they were plastic and broke.)

For those interested in the transition to a counter depth we are happy thus far. I love being able to open the doors & seen almost everything in the fridge. Of course we do have a second refrigerator & can't imagine having a counterdepth without the 2nd fridge. I was always opening second (& sometimes 3rd) jars of olives, pickles or mustard that got "lost" in the back. I like the skinny "deli" drawer in the middle, but have lost my "shelf" to set things on as I moved things in & out of the refrigerator. Every once in a while my heart sinks when I pull out a veggie or fruit drawer & they don't come out as far as I think they should.

honugirl, I don't know if this will inspire confidence, but I'm on my 2nd Kitchenaid wall oven and cooktop combination and have only good things to say. We've never had any problems. Thank goodness. In fact, since we were so pleased with our Kitchenaid appliances from our former home, we reselected essentially the same models for our new place. The appliance dealer from whom we purchased, sells all the other brands, Viking, GE, Thermador, Miele, Wolf etc. and praised Kitchenaid as a quality product. It is disappointing & disheartening to read about the problems as related by other posters. However, it seems this is a venue for complaints on all products and brands. I guess we were blissfully ignorant before the internet and didn't 2nd guess a lot of things. Note to Jerrod, it is tiresome to see your negative and less than insightful comments. As a regular reader, I know you are a Miele fan. Not everyone is interested in import brands and like I said above, there are plenty of complaints about them as well. I.E., last year a member, I believe "Fairgold", could not get her 5 year old Miele dishwasher properly repaired & functioning. Miele offered no help, so she replaced the machine with a Bosch. That hardly fits the 20 year life span that is so breathlessly talked about. Add the cost of the 2 machines together, she could have had a lifetime supply of ordinary brand machines.

We just bought the frigidaire FGHG2366PF and it was delivered Wednesday. I did not want water and we did not hook up the ice machine-- we do not have a water line where fridge is installed and do not really care about ice that much. My first thoughts are the fridge space is ample for a counter depth except for the veggie and fruit bins , but there are only 2 of us so I can manage. The freezer is a disappointment. It holds much less than my LG bottom freezer did-- space is lost with the slide out top drawer since it will not slide when a package is a bit too high. It does make more noise and seems to run more but maybe that is normal for newer fridges. It has LED lighting which I love and a door alarm if it is left open too long and alarms if the temp gets too hot. I wanted a fingerprint proof finish which is why I chose this fridge and did not want side by side. I also wanted to keep it reasonably priced since I had bought my regular LG 6.5 years ago and I am frugal and could not justify a new fridge when we redid the kitchen. The LG is now the second fridge mostly because I need freezer space and we like to keep extra beverages cold. Hope that helps.

You know, they're both fine DWs. The important thing is, they load differently. Have you taken a 'sample box' in to an actual display where you can see if odd-sized dishes and pots/pans/casseroles/baking sheets will fit? I was perfectly open to buying a Miele, KA or F&P Dishdrawers. But when I tried to fit really big items or thick potteryware - the KA was the only one that was going to work for me. My KA is a different model but has the Pro Wash. On mine it works only in the 2 back rows on the bottom rack, with items facing in reverse (towards the back rather than towards the front). It works really well - I do a lot of cheese-encrusted casseroles and it gets the casserole sparkling clean - but there's a couple of things that are just a little too tall to fit in easily. I've noticed here that many people discuss the right detergent to use with the Miele. It seems a little fussier about that than the KA, I'm not sure why. I know that for DWs without food grinders it's important to use the enzyme-based detergent. THe only detergent I've had a problem with on the KA was a 'green' brand that was just awful. Otherwise I've used powders and gels of different brands, and they've all worked just fine.

Check back with KA, see how long the warranty was for that fridge--especially the "Sealed System" (Compressor, Condensor & Evaporator). See if KA will at least honor that part. See if they will sell you an "After Market Warranty" and if so, How Much, and what does it cover? IE You get the thing home and the compressor is shot---will that after market warranty cover it?
