keep or return Kitchen Aid Architect Series II range?

My KA Architect Series II range was just delivered to me on Sunday. If I had discovered this forum earlier, I doubt I would have purchased this range. I called KA customer service to express my concerns about the pages of consumer complaints and was told that since June 07, the oven door hinges were changed and a fan was installed to address the over-heating issue. What to do? Should I keep it or exchange it?

I guess it depends on how much you really want to have this range.

KA - this is the same company who made defective ranges..as described in this forum, yet did NOTHING to help the consumers who purchased them and acted as if there was nothing wrong.

Now customer service says that they changed the door hinges and changed a fan to address over-heating...except...I thought nothing was wrong according to them.. and they failed to take responsibility by helping their customer base.

I am sure others will have different opinions but for me..No I would not have that range in my house or in my line of sight..and I might well never have another KA or whirlpool(the manufacturer)appliance in my house.

honugirl, I don't know if this will inspire confidence, but I'm on my 2nd Kitchenaid wall oven and cooktop combination and have only good things to say. We've never had any problems. Thank goodness.

In fact, since we were so pleased with our Kitchenaid appliances from our former home, we reselected essentially the same models for our new place. The appliance dealer from whom we purchased, sells all the other brands, Viking, GE, Thermador, Miele, Wolf etc. and praised Kitchenaid as a quality product.

It is disappointing & disheartening to read about the problems as related by other posters. However, it seems this is a venue for complaints on all products and brands. I guess we were blissfully ignorant before the internet and didn't 2nd guess a lot of things.

Note to Jerrod, it is tiresome to see your negative and less than insightful comments. As a regular reader, I know you are a Miele fan. Not everyone is interested in import brands and like I said above, there are plenty of complaints about them as well.

I.E., last year a member, I believe "Fairgold", could not get her 5 year old Miele dishwasher properly repaired & functioning. Miele offered no help, so she replaced the machine with a Bosch. That hardly fits the 20 year life span that is so breathlessly talked about. Add the cost of the 2 machines together, she could have had a lifetime supply of ordinary brand machines.

I have the GE Cafe Gas Range and have been only using it for about 2 weeks now. I really love it. I use Magic Stainless Steel Spray when I am done cooking and my top stays so nice. But then again, I have had the range for only a short time. I also love the recirculating fan hood Zephyr that I bought that really takes out the odors and so far it is nice for not be venting. I know a few others with GE ranges that owned them for many years and are happy so If felt comfortable getting a GE Range knowing each appliance had their bad and good points. But just in case there was a problem, I added the 5 year extended warranty so I would have my range fixed right away. My second choice was the NXR but it did not have self-cleaning and I decided that was a feature I did not want to be without even if I only use it a few times a year.

I would take the time to look at the KA, along with other Whirlpool Fridges (Jenn-air) for example. Most, if not all of these fridges use the same variable speed compressor (Whirlpool), that Jenn-air first came out with back around 2005. (But Double check that to be sure!!!) I'm not positive at this point that "ALL" the SZ's use this newer compressor as SZ tends to keep this type of info, Well Hidden, We do know that the SZ's that use the VSC use the Whirlpool compressor. So "most all" of these fridges are using the same "Guts" (compressor and controller board for it), so---- when you are paying that extra $1500 you are paying for ("extra fit and finish") and there is the "distinct possibility", you "Might" be paying for "Dated Technology" in some models of the SZ. You will be paying for 2 compressors in the case of SZ and I believe Miele. I have yet to taste ice cubes that taste like bacon or vice versa,(in any fridge) that I have had for the 50 or so years that I have owned fridges, so I have lived Nicely, all my life with single compressor fridges. You will see where folks claim that the produce last longer with the SZ's and Liebherrs "Biofresh", but you will also see the same type of comments from posters with single compressor fridges (Jenn-Air) for example. I think the reason for the produce lasting longer (along with some of the other "Magical attributes") of the dual compressors, is more likely due to the better insulation the newer fridges have along with the better and more even and consistent temp control--(Jenn-air, I believe, is claiming +/- half a degree (F) temp accuracy in their new ones,) and I have seen others claim at least +/- 1 degree (F). So big thing is, "Most all" have the same "Whirlpool guts",(Not positive about Liebherr). See if you really think the fit and finish and other "Xtras" are worth the xtra money. Back in 2006 when I bought my Jenn-air, it was much better lit inside, it had the adjustable shelves with crank handles, it had digital readouts for 3 areas of the fridge (each individually adjustable) along with another digital readout and control for the freezer. Back then SZ had none of this. It had Huge Gills showing at the top, and add the fact that Consumer Reports rated the SZ dead last for reliability and Jenn-air #1 for reliability made it an easy decision for me. Now fast forward 5 years, Jenn-air still quiet, efficient, and completely trouble free, plus back in 2006 I pocketed about a $4000 savings. Unfortunately Jenn-air is not the bargain it was back in 2006 as Whirlpool bought Jenn-air, and Price fixed it, like Miele and SZ, deciding to make it "High end" by increasing its price, close to that of SZ and Miele--- OH well, At Least Miele and SZ were first at that, even thou it took them a bit longer to compete "Technically" Good luck on your decision!! We like ours. We looked at a variety of ovens in a remodel, at all price points. $$$ were not a driving factor for us. In spite of what everyone on here seems to think, I like the look of matching handles. We went with the KA KUDE70 DW and with the KA SS microwave that has the drop down door and control panel above, with the look of a mini-oven. We thought the ovens looked great with these two, and actually thought the features and controls were really nice. So far we have been very pleased. We did add a second roll out rack to the lower oven, to match the one that comes standard in the upper oven. It doesn't cost much, we ordered it diret from KA. The only real issues I have read about concerned the self cleaning features, which some seem to have had issues with. To be honest, I do not like selfcleaning, the high heat is not natural and I can see where this will shorten the life span of some components, regardless of the brand. Happily, the design of the oven interior makes it super easy to clean up any spills. My wife cooks and if she spills anything in the oven, as soon as it is cool I clean it up. Usually only requires a wet cloth, but I think once I used some Barkeepers Friend on a tough spill. As of now, it looks brand new. Oh, I did notice a speck of dust under the glass on the upper oven door after it was installed. I removed the inner glass and cleaned it off, and reinstalled the inner glass. Otherwise, no issues at all. We went with Dacor for our cooktop, which was a drop in on a granite surgace with a pop up vent behind (there is a window behind the cooktop).

jellytoast - I'm glad to hear you like your dishwasher. I like your suggestion of ordering a flush dishwasher but really like the Pro Line. It's pretty :-) KA doesn't seem to offer a flush lip for the trash compactor anymore. I just called the store and the appliance salesman suggested getting the "panel ready" trash compactor instead of stainless, so we can have a panel made to match the cabinets (which will be painted off-white) and won't need to use an appliance handle. I like the idea but DH thinks a light painted cabinet face is not a good choice for a trash compactor, with kids in the house. I don't know if it would be a problem. We don't usually get food on the front of the trash compactor now (just fingerprints) and it would still be cleanable. lynn2006 - thank you for posting the links! nini - you have my dream kitchen. It's gorgeous! Definitely going in my inspiration file for my eventual major remodel. I didn't even notice that the handles were different in the pictures until I went back to check. If both of you like the look and function of the Pro Line handles, can you get replacement handles for your appliances through KitchenAid? The specs on the Architect and Pro Line appliances I'm looking at are the same, so I'm thinking the handle is the only difference.

I really don't care if you are tired reading my posts.

I did not, and am not suggesting the poster get a Miele as there are other domestic brands available in which the company at least tries to take care of their customers.

I recently put an electric kitchen aid arch II range in my kitchen and so far am pleased with the appearance & performance. This oven takes a bit longer to preheat then I am used to but once heated cooks a bit faster than usual.

Lots of folks have an ax to grind about 1 brand or another & it's a free country (or blog, anyway).

We've had no problem with our KA Fridge, and they're always in the running when we look at appliances of any size. Also, we know a few people w/ the new KA ovens & they are quite particular. They are also pleased with their choice.

I love my KA Double Ovens. We have had them for about four months now, and have not had any problems whatsoever. We also have the KA SS FD Refrigerator, and are very happy with it too. Hope this helps a little.

honugirl, did you end up keeping the range? I found one of these on clearance for $1300, and love the look and features. Based on the few comments I've found though, I'm concerned about the noise of the convection oven. Anybody have one of these ovens (I believe the model number is KGRS807SSS. A neighbor of mine just got the Architect II standalone range, and she is very pleased. The convection is loud and the fan runs quite a while after you turn the oven off, but she's quite happy with it. (She hasn't run the cleaning cycle yet, so I can't comment on whether that's better with the new model.)
