I have just received the most wonderful parcel from Deb! Deb you are so very thoughtful and so generous!

One little glitch....Clive took the camera to the lake so I'm not able to shows pics until Monday. I did email Deb so hopefully she has some pics to share but if not I'll be sure to post Monday.

My words won't do justice to this special parcel but I'll try. Deb used 4 clever themes for the parcel, Stoneware, Wood, Regional and Bags (yeah bags bet I'm the only one who ever got a bags category!!! LOL)

The stoneware is gorgeous. A beautiful blue cruet for oil, the colour is fantastic kinda mauvey blue with some brown accents and a lovely size, not too big. Deb also sent a great square stoneware bowl, the size is perfect for everything from a small casserole, any side dish and I can really see it as part of an appetizer buffet It is an oatmealy colour with great accents and a lovely scalloped edge. Both are going to sit proudly on my shelves at the cottage along with some other lovely things I've received in swaps.

For the Wood Deb sent me the most unusual wooden spoon I've ever seen. The bowl is very large in relationship to the handle and the wood is gorgeous. Deb mentioned it being perfect for something like Pasta Salad, and it would be. I imagine I'll be getting lots of comments about it and I'll be sure to tell how I came to be the proud owner!

I was also lucky enough to be blessed with some special things from Virginia (Deb was thinking a horse but the postage was prohibitive!) I love getting things that are local to the area my swap partner is from, it's always so special and personal. Two great Virginia cookbooks. One looks like it will be a great bathtub read, it describes and provides background on the historic restaurants in Virginia along with their famous recipes. The other is a Junior League Cookbook of real Virginia recipes but with a twist, not sure what the twist is but I'll know before the day is out. Along with that was a can of Virginia peanuts, I'm pretty sure I never mentioned that Clive was the peanut king, but he is. So much so that a friend gives him a Costco size jar every Christmas. So guess I'll share!

Somewhere along the way Deb seems to have gotten the notion that we like wine and sent us some local Virginia wine, a red and a white, both dry. Deb described the one winery and I think it may have to be a stop we make when we are in Virginia next year. Can't wait to uncork but will restrain myself until Clive gets home....at least I'll try!

Last but not least, the bags! Clever Deb packed everything into a great big woven basket that will be perfect for hauling all my "hooking" supplies around in. It's perfect because the uncut wool can lie flat and it opens up really wide so I can easily see everything inside. Perfect! She also sent a produce bag and a cooler bag for my trips to the market. Deb suggested I may want to use the woven basket for the market instead of my hooking but I'm going to use it for my hooking, 'cause my hooking is special and so is Deb!!.

Deb I can't tell you how much I appreciate the things you picked for me. They are all very much me. You were very thoughtful and very generous and I shall think of you every time I enjoy them.

Wow, who needs pictures. Your description of each item is so good I can almost see everything.

What an amazing swap box. Deb you really put a lot of thought into what you sent Sharon. You would think that you had known her for years.

Thanks for the advice so far- it is very helpful. Paigect, we had considered moving closer to his kids a year ago, but it is not an option right now because of our jobs. There are also issues with his ex harrassing him (obscene phone calls and the like) and it seems that the stress level for my fiance is lower with him living away from her. I am not clear as to how much the autistic child depends on his father as part of his routine. When he was in my house, the child was very stressed and wanted to leave the whole weekend to go home, although we did everything possible to keep him occupied. Because of this, I believe it is just too disruptive to him to be traveled. He also acted the same way in his grandparents' house for the first few months until he adjusted to the routine there. But, because of the severity of his condition, I do not know if he would even notice the difference between monthly and twice-monthly visits. I don't want to make that assumption having never been exposed to a developmentally disabled child, but it seems to me that an infant would notice her dad gone more than he will. When he was here, his father did most of the caretaking, but because the autistic child needs so much supervision, I ended up taking care of the girl the whole time and cooking all meals for the family, etc. which was hard because I had been working all week and had no down time(my job demands a lot of me during the week). It is true that I have not been as active as I should be with going with my fiance to visit his kids at his parents'. This has been largely due to my pregnancy, but I do agree that after the baby is born I could, and plan to, take a more active role in going up there with him and spending time with the kids. The baby's grandparents will want to see her, regardless, and it is important to me that we are providing them with that opportunity. My fiance is trying to make alternate arrangments with his brother to bring the kids to the brother's house once a month to alleviate the stress on his ill mother. I hope his brother will accomodate this. I feel that it is not only exhausting to the grandma and to me to have him driving so far every weekend, but to my fiance to make this trip twice a month. Once a month would be more managable, and there is no reason why a 13 year old could not take the train here alone (after a practice run with dad). I also agree that he feels a great deal of guilt for the situation his children are in due to having divorced parents and probably overcompensating. Compounding it, is his ex wife not handling the situation very well. She has been living with someone else for longer than we have been together, but seems to be very jealous that her ex is doing fine without her and about to start a family with someone new. I have never met or talked to her and prefer to keep it that way, and my fiance tries to keep a business-type relationship with her. However, she has been feeding information to the daughter that her father will not want to see her and the son anymore once the baby is born, and this has created jealously between the daughter and the baby even though the baby is not born. I can only hope that the daughter will grow out of this or that the jealousy will be smaller once she meets her little sister. I do not know if it is normal behavior for a 13 year old to express such extreme jealousy toward a baby sister (she tells her dad that he is ruining her life by having this baby, that she was happy being the only girl, that she hates the baby). Otherwise, she is well behaved with me and I have enjoyed having her here the 2 times she came to visit. I have a wonderful relationship with my stepmother and hope that over time we will, too. The ex wife is sure to be very unhappy if we try to reduce the amount of time he is picking up the autistic son, as she seems to want to go out to bars and party a great deal, and cannot find another babysitter. It seems strange to me that she never wants her kids on the holidays. What she thinks matters very little to me, but the fact that she drags the girl into it makes the situation harder. To me, it is not appropriate to say anything negative about the other parent in front of the child. I believe that my fiance has a certain level of fear that she will try to take the kids away from him (which is ridiculous, he is a wonderful father to those kids and she would have no grounds in court). It is a complicated situation, and I just don't want to be selfish and whiny about it. I understand that there are real challenges associated with marrying a man is divorced with kids from a previous marriage, but I also believe very strongly that my baby deserves a normal life, and I don't want my only baby to miss out on time with her father. Again, I have no idea how much an infant needs her father but I expect that being away from home 2 weekends a month would interfere with their bonding. I can handle a great deal here on my own, and he does work very hard to contribute to this household while he is here, but to be gone so much seems excessive. All of this, I have discussed with my fiance, and he understands, but I can tell he feels a great deal of guilt and I don't want to make him abandon his children. Just the opposite. I just want to make sure I am not out of line for feeling this way because I don't want to make the situation even more unfair for all involved when there are 3 kids this affects. Any more opinions on this, I would really enjoy hearing- and thanks again for the input.

you are correct theotherside, but it's not right to use the support from one father to support another father's children. If both are paying support, then it is should be assumed that the rent comes from both fathers, not just one. But if only one is paying support, then the children of the father that pays should not suffer because the father of the other children does not pay. If the other father does not pay anything, then the mother should pay more toward the housing costs instead of using child support from the father that pays. How can his children share in his standard of living when she averts some of the money that is meant to use on them, to other children, whose father doesn't support them? I think THAT is wrong. I have three kids with three fathers. If I get support for any of them (and I have on occasion, never regularly), I might use part to help with the bills, but the child that it's intended for should get more of a benefit, whether it's a new pair of shoes, outfit, spending money or whatever. I have always given them something from it. Like I said, I've never gotten a large sum... usually less than fifty bucks, but they get some kind of direct benefit from it. I usually would say that kids don't need to know about child support issues, but on occasion, I have told my kids when I get any money from their dad that they are getting X because their dad sent some money. Since they never saw their dad, I felt they needed to know that he was at least contributing, even if it was only here or there. I never complained that I didn't get support. That only makes kids feel bad about it.

I'm not an expert. That said, my first reaction would be "don't give up whatever current rights you have" -- which is not necessarily the same as "don't let your SD live with her BM". If you're in relatively the same geographical area, on relatively good terms with the BM, if the BM isn't sneaky or underhanded (eg abduction, lawsuit behind your back), and if as you say there's no physical/emotional risk (as far as that sort of thing is foreseeable) then I'd say work out a temporary long-term agreement on your own. Say, half the school year, 3 to 4 months, maybe a little longer -- long enough for the rosy glow to wear off. Talk to the biomom seriously about the realities of what's needed to make that happen. School districts, allergies, missing friends, that sort of thing -- just to be sure she understands. You said that she's already had kids living with her, so I guess that's not a worry. After the trial period is up, everyone could review and see if the experiment failed, if it succeeded, or if things need to be modified. Watch out for the SD pulling people's strings. Soap box: Children are people too, and thus tend to learn personal-type things the hard way. :) Right now, your SD has (at least) 2 possible homes. The best home would have the highest percentage of "good for her subjectively (makes her happy)" along with highest percentage "good for her objectively (physical safety, no emotional abuse, teaching how to get along in life, monetary support, dah-doo-run-run)". I think if you give her a blanket 'no' she's not going to be a very pleasant person to live with. If it's safe for her to learn the percentage lesson herself the hard way, then I say let her learn the hard way. And maybe the hard way is the best way. Even for the BM. You never know. That being said, before I met her my wife allowed her daughter to return to live with her BD -- and it will prob require additional expensive lawsuits and the cooperation of a child who's being threatened and thus unreliable in court to ever regain custody. Possibly even to reinstate visitation. And this is compounded by the fact that custody was *voluntarily* given up.

Durable goods are really nice to receive in a swap because they keep giving. I don't collect stoneware, but I can appreciate how it will fit in your cottage. I do collect wooden spoons, however, especially when I go to African craft fairs. Most of them I do not use, and I occasionally give them as gifts.

Atually I just had an email from Deb and, because of the storms, she has been without phone and stable internet for almost two weeks. She was hoping the telephone guys would show today.

What a thoughtful package. Deb really spent time getting it just right. The Virginia collection sounds especially appealing. One of the things I love about travel is getting local specialties. You've had a trip to Virginia without leaving the house.

Sharon, your post and detailed descriptions have me so excited even I want to see pictures! LOL! And I didn't take any pictures, though I did consider it, because I knew you could on your end! Wouldn't it figure you'd get your package while your camera is away for the weekend!

I'm so excited you like everything! I guess I can stop all the hand-wringing and teeth-gnashing now! I read cookbooks like novels, too. It's cool we have that in common! You'll have to let me know how those wines were! I was delighted to have you as my partner! Enjoy!

Sharon, M24K did an excellent job. I cannot wait to see the pictures! I love bowls, and I can imagine how gorgeous the bowl is. I also love bags, so I am eager to see those. Your descriptions, however, are excellent, so if I close my eyes and imagine until they get posted, I can see them. Great job, Deb...OUR NEWEST KINDA LAST-MINUTE CANNY CAMPER!!!

The descriptions of of the contents of your goodies Sharon were so good that I am eagerly awaiting the photos. Having to wait is kind of fun though, leaves me time to imagine. The stoneware and the woven basket sound wonderful. I have a bag thing (much to DH's sorrow) and who can have enough beautiful serving pieces. Good job M24K!! I know Sharon will enjoy everything for a long time to come.
