mac visitor to our wireless

I thought I would try you to see if you can help.

We have our network set up as wireless with Cox Cable.

My daughter has a Mac laptop, and we cannot get it to connect to the internet via the wirless net in my home. We have the password, but that does not help.

Do you have any suggestions?

Usually the wireless card and its software will see wireless access points names and you would select yours, and not pick your neighbors, then it should ask for the key code.

Are you saying your daughter can see your wireless name on her laptop and can type in your access code but nothing happens? Or is there something else not happening?

If she can normally access wireless access on her laptop, there should be no difference at your house.

Call Cox and I'm sure they can help.

Thanks all. I really appreciate your input. I'm leaning towards the Belkin N600 Wireless Dual Band router. I currently own a Belkin and have never had any trouble with it, so figure I'll stick with what I'm happy with. The downside is all of the reviews without fail mention how bad tech support is no matter what brand you get. I wonder when companies are going to wise up and realize that is one reason folks don't buy their equipment.

Thanks all...I will be looking at all this during the weekend. I believe my linksys is the: WRT54G2. Re: I can't believe you would let them play the game if they persist in this behavior. Who is the boss at your house? It's just another game to them, not referring to the X Box. First, I really was not looking for parenting advise. While you may be right you do not know what our situation is. Some folks like to simply prevent problem before it ever really becomes a problem. Others have may have 'out of control' kids with issues (and maybe the parents are to blame or there are other circumstances) and this is a better way of eliminating a problem rather than fighting about it. I personally like tech stuff and figured this was an opportunity to learn something new and nip a problem in the bud. In nice to know how modern things work as you get older....if only in general terms. I recall an uncle who never really could understand how to work a VCR in 70s...I do not twant this to be me and tech changes fast. Second, if you think an X box is just another game to kids then either do not have, do not have kids or your children are quite the exception. Thanks all...

That's exactly what we did yesterday and they got it working in a short time with a few changes on the computer, after wasting a lot of time with Fujitsu and Qwest. Fujitsu was good about trying to help, but they can't keep up with all the router details. We just didn't think of checking the router first since it was working on everything else. Thanks for the tip, though.

@lidebbie, I went from nearly 20 yrs on a PC (WordPerfect 4!! back when WP was IT!) to a Mac mini about 3 yrs ago. I was still using a PC @ work..windows xp/Microsoft all the way. It was interesting (!) to learn to be bi-lingual but doable and after my retirement, both dh and I got new Macs. He kept running into sooo much of a hassle with security issues on his laptop that he really really is happy with his new mac. No constant virus updates. We both miss, in different ways, Outlook. I tried using the Mac version but it was too much trouble. We now can both sync our Ical calenders and all our contacts, email accounts etc with our Iphones also. For me some of the initial issue was space and both the mini and my current Imac solved that issue. We also have an Apple store in our city and the free help is great plus dh bough the yearly One-on-One ($250.) because his Mac is for his work. It's a fantastic investment.

FWIW...I have Cox and have found them very courteous and helpful from time-to-time -- even when the problem wasn't theirs.

THank you so much for your responses. They found the answer when my son called the Router people. There was a missing symbol that was needed, and when they typed that in, she was on. It was funny that the symbol is not printed, but one that the particular woman discovered when she had a similar problem.

I really appreciate your responses. I am amazed at the collective knowledge that I find here. I only wish that when our school adopted a new grade book program that any one of you was around.
