Experts at Mac

I have one question. Do you guys who help us so much with our pc's also know about macs ? I am contimplating getting an apple laptop & no absolutely nothing about them where as I have finally learned a little about the dell pc I have and windows . There is no way I could have learned what I did without all of you. Are you as knowledgable about apple macs? Thanks, Debbie

When you buy your Mac just remember, Google is your friend. Try Googling 'Mac tutorials' and you will be amazed at the wealth of information available to you. Same with specific issues, simply Google or even look for a Mac forum, there will be plenty about. Just lurk on a few so you can register on one that has a civilised membership and not a load of arrogant bozzos who enjoy harassing folk.

Owbist - I have finally made up my mind to stay with the old pc. I just don't have the stamina anymore to start learning a new system at my age. Besides, I will have to learn all this wireless stuff now and I have no intentions of changing forums as I do adore all of you. Thanks and I do try to google a lot. One of the oldtimers - Paul - taught me that. Usually double check with you guys for security, though. Debbie.

Yay! You have a 30 foot tree in your front yard - perfect! "Underneath is shady and covered in needles, though" - do not worry about that! I am in the No SF Bay area, so very similar climate to yours. I planted one of my MACs in FULL shade at the bottom of a large tree which was surrounded by at least 6 other trees, making a sort of small forest. All we did was plant the MAC about 3 feet away from the trunk (you will have to dig it a hole), and fed and watered it while it was still a baby. We just put some cord between it and the trunk of the tree. Within a few months it got the idea (in FULL shade still), and grew toward the tree. By the time it actually touched the tree, it sped up, and in another year had achieved the top of the tree. So, if you grow it on that tree you will NOT have to cut it back at all, or spray it either. Just make sure it gets water in our hot dry Summers, and it will take care of itself otherwise. Jackie

Hi Jane, I am 66 and have used a PC for many years. I attended a short computer class once and worked on a Mac. The biggest frustration I recall is that it responded to a single click and I was used to double clicking. I decided that although it would take time to get used to, I wanted to set up my PC to respond to a single click. Since then, I have set up any new computer to single click. I have a very difficult problem because I DO NOT intuit anything. I have to read instructions and even then, I may not understand. I have to do a lot of searching for very basic things: most recently, "how to use a touch pad" after I bought a 10.1 inch netbook. I sometimes use a cordless mouse because I still hate a touch pad. Returning to my inability to intuit anything and everything that "normal" users do without thinking, the problem is very real, constant, and extremely frustrating. I have to be very motivated to struggle through learning new concepts. Case in point: I use a cell phone only to make and receive calls. I have been unable to figure out how to send or receive text messages, I can't program functions like the clock or the list of people whose numbers I want to call, I can bring up a list of missed calls, but I can't easily call the person back, etc. I can't download different ring tones even though I would dearly love to find Allison Du Bois' ringtone--from the "Medium." I can find this information online but I can't figure out how to get it into my phone and then select the new app for my phone. I am not stupid. I was first a teacher and then a registered nurse and I have two MS degrees, both with high honors. I am simply brain dead in the area of the brain that allows one to intuit while on a computer. I think it is absolutely imperative that your husband sees a patient tech in a Mac store and has a chance to experience the differences between Mac and PC. Good luck! Nancy

Here is a link about OpenOffice. I don't have good enough excel experience to be an advocate for the OO program. I love the concept of this project; professionals and users creating software for free (you can contribute toward costs), improving it as needed, and distributing for free to everyone - just for the public good, no profits involved. I hadn't heard of it until this last fall, but it's been around for over a decade. It is an org. and not a .com! http://about.openoffice.org/index.html Here is a list of features on their most recent release. Natal, I don't think I have "Pages". I moved a two-step ladder out of the g'houses to the sewing room, so that I can easily reach high up on the design wall to pin blocks. Moved a wheeled, swivel office chair out of my old office to put on one side of the quilting frame, so that I could slide easily from one work point to the next as the quilting progressed, and leave another chair on the other side of the frame. You can't believe how often you change positions at a floor frame. I use the compass from my old EKG interpretation class for making circles, the straight edges from my drafting supplies, old crocks with bails for things like straight pins, a sprayer from my house cleaning supplies for water when ironing, paper from a huge roll of butcher paper salvaged from my hubby who is a retired butcher I use for paper piecing, cone thread not related to quilting for basting. Knitting needles for stiletos to turn seams. Use the old pole lamp light brackets to hang sections of sashing and bindings as I make them. Washable markers I borrow from my 'kiddy fun supplies' for marking complex quilting lines. OMGosh.........everything can be multipurposed. My fav is an old stuffed bear my dd was going to throw away as a pin cushion at the ironing board. I keep another pin cushion also at the machine and when it fills up I just swap the nearly empty cushion from the ironing board, where I often pin blocks. Saves a lot of steps.

Chalk one up for the PC crowd, ha ha. I do own a Mac but it is on the floor and has not been used in ages. It was given to me fully loaded, I tried it for a while but was not impressed. Perhaps that was because I did not really want to change format, it was not the fault of the Mac for sure.

now if you could please tell me where to go to find out how much I need of the ram, hard drives & video cards on this new thing. Is there a chart or something out there somewhere ? Thanks so much as always, Debbie

You can find out exactly what is inside your computer by using a program such as the free one linked below or Belarc Advisor.

If you then decide you need more RAM or a different video card you could try a local vendor or in America you have either Fry's or Newegg, both have excellent reputations

@lidebbie, I went from nearly 20 yrs on a PC (WordPerfect 4!! back when WP was IT!) to a Mac mini about 3 yrs ago. I was still using a PC @ work..windows xp/Microsoft all the way. It was interesting (!) to learn to be bi-lingual but doable and after my retirement, both dh and I got new Macs. He kept running into sooo much of a hassle with security issues on his laptop that he really really is happy with his new mac. No constant virus updates.

We both miss, in different ways, Outlook. I tried using the Mac version but it was too much trouble. We now can both sync our Ical calenders and all our contacts, email accounts etc with our Iphones also.

For me some of the initial issue was space and both the mini and my current Imac solved that issue. We also have an Apple store in our city and the free help is great plus dh bough the yearly One-on-One ($250.) because his Mac is for his work. It's a fantastic investment.

I just purchased the new Macbook and I couldn't love it more. It is beautiful. The screen is so clear and it's so fast. It's easy to learn Safari. I will never go back to a PC.

Thanks everyone but I chickened out & ordered another Dell XPS. I got the M1530. It's a different service dept. from Canada (I think) for the XPS and so far it has been great with my regular pc. As usual - I really tried to research what I needed but probably messed it all up. Anyway - I am now trying to figure out this wireless stuff with cards & routers, etc.
But I really do want to try the Mac someday. It just seems so great. Maybe the next pc. Thanks again, Debbie.
