way to enforce time limits for wireless activuty

I am not sure how to say this but we have a wireless router allowing access fro a laptop, itouch and xbox to the internet. The kids keep sneaking and playing xbox live way past their bedtime. Is there a way I can not allow the xbox access say after 11pm S-Th...or to even disable wireless somehow in that time frame....?

Would need to know if its xp / vista or 7 see the video for how to through the Xbox! Pay atteneion to the family timer section.

"What I do not understand is why they charge a monthly fee of 7.95 for up to 4 computers." It may be that the contract you have with them now allows you to connect only a single PC and that they charge extra for multiple PCs to connect. That kind of pricing used to be more common when only propeller headed geeks had home networks, but home networks are pretty common these days, so charging extra seems unusual to me. I'd be in a bit of trouble if I were limited to 4 PCs. I think we've got 5 PCs, a Tivo, 2 game consoles, 2 handheld game systems and 2 iTouches that are all connected (or can be at various times). Fortunately, my ISP doesn't place any limit on the number of devices I connect.

Yes you absolutely can still connect the pc by use of the ethernet cable from the router and use the laptop wirelessly, that is how most usually do it since the desktop stays put. Mine is that way I have my router and cable modem on the end of my desk so easy access from there to my desktop computers so they are all connected by wire, my netbook and laptop are wireless, but even they can be connected by the ethernet cable should you need to. Before I had my wireless router I had a 25ft ethernet cable that ran from my desk on the baseboard to my recliner where I use my netbook. I buy a lot of my electronics from newegg and they do offer good prices and quick shipping. I also use buy.com quite a bit. You may want to check some of those in comparison to your local store. Also if you have a walmart check there they usually carry these kinds of items and for less. I got my wireless linksys router there. On the usb cards some come with a cord on them so the usb device can be moved around some on the desk which will help with reception sometimes. feel free to ask all you need we will try to answer. I too prefer to buy the same brands when possible it just helps sometimes for compatibility issues.

If we haven't finished within 6 months of getting our permits, we have to pay our permit fees again. Nobody ever finishes in 6 months, it's the city's way of increasing permit fees without increasing permit fees. There's a lot across the street from ours that's been vacant for 16 years. Apparently the property has been tied up in a divorce dispute. Other lots on the street have been bought and sold repeatedly. There's no rules for how long you have to do something with the land. But this is an old established neighbourhood that's getting turned over. It hasn't belonged to a developer since the 50s. The enforcement and penalties would be dependent on the covenants on your specific property.

Just unplug the router, or plug it into an outlet that is controlled by a switch.

yea, i am looking for a technical way to control this...without needing to pull a plug that can be put back in once I doze off.

There is probably no technical way to do this that a kid can't get around. There are multiple YouTube videos on how to circumvent Parental Controls on XBox. The real issue is getting them to respect your rules after they're told what they are. If you can't get them to abide by your rules, use a physical solution, like a power plug lockout.

I don't think that all home routers offer time limits on wireless access but some do. The Linksys WRT54 series is one that has time limits (although I don't know if that applies to EVERY model). You're going to need to read through the manual - carefully (it's not always specifically mentioned).

I appreciate the 'obediance' type advise but I have found its better to nip the problem from the get go thus the search for a solution. I have to believe there is a way to lock out wireless, or have a new password in effect at a certain or something....

I'll look in my lynksys manual....

Many routers allow pretty granular control. You'd need to use the admin functionality of the router and also make sure you password protect the router. Which linksys router is it?

cool this is what I was looking for if I can:

1) find this software on my pc...I have the Linksys G2 router on vista...

2) does the X box have a MAC address and if so how do I find it?

My other solution was to buy a short extension cord, plug it into the 8 outlet adapter strip...plug a timer into the other end of the extension cord and the router into the timer. I guess this would work and be safe but its low tech and t hey will eventually find the timer...though it won't be easy to get to...

What model? Look at the router, not the PC. It should have a model number on it somewhere. Something like WRT54G or WIP310, etc.

The Xbox has a MAC address (everything with a network card has a MAC address). You can probably find it once you get into the administration of the router. If you can tell us what router you have, we can find the manual online and help you figure out how to do this.

I can't believe you would let them play the game if they persist in this behavior. Who is the boss at your house? It's just another game to them, not referring to the X Box.

The Xbox Mac Address can be found by doing this.

First, I really was not looking for parenting advise. While you may be right you do not know what our situation is. Some folks like to simply prevent problem before it ever really becomes a problem. Others have may have 'out of control' kids with issues (and maybe the parents are to blame or there are other circumstances) and this is a better way of eliminating a problem rather than fighting about it. I personally like tech stuff and figured this was an opportunity to learn something new and nip a problem in the bud. In nice to know how modern things work as you get older....if only in general terms. I recall an uncle who never really could understand how to work a VCR in 70s...I do not twant this to be me and tech changes fast.

Second, if you think an X box is just another game to kids then either do not have, do not have kids or your children are quite the exception.
