Wireless modem requires wire ... ?

As mentioned in an earlier post we bought a Netgear Wireless G WGR614 v10 and installed it readily.

But I am confused in that it required me to connect to my computer with a wire- that bright blue wire that was previously connected to my modem (actually a Bridgemaxx receiver).

Do I have more steps to go through to get my computer to recognise the new situation? The Gateway DX4200 came with an ethernet card (Marvell Yukon 88E8071 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller).

Our hope was that we would be able to move the big Gateway to a more remote location and send it signals from the router at the same time that we used the (soon to be bought) laptop as a roamer, but it looks like we might have to leave it on the kitchen table.

Thanks again for help!
