Oh dear. My mom had squirrels in her attic once. Adorable critters outside but one doesn't really want them nesting inside. My apologies for not being clear: I did patch up the holes so that more carpenter bees and/or water wouldn't get in. In fact, I apparently patched up one hole before all the bee larvae were gone, because within hours of the patching, Ms. Woodpecker (no red) pecked out all of the patch material to complete her excavation. After that, I waited until the next day just to make sure she was done. I'm thinking she might have been a hairy woodpecker because I remember thinking she looked large, although until this article, I didn't know there was such. I had only heard of the Downys.

How timely! Just an hour or so ago there was either a downy or a hairy woodpecker at our birdfeeder. Now I want it to come back so I can identify it by its beak length! Thanks for a great article.

Wonderful to see so many engaged bird watchers and enthusiast. If you are unfamiliar with Project Feeder Watch (http://feederwatch.org/), it too is a Citizen Science Project with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. You can watch/count birds (which many of you appear to do already) and record that data to contribute to science. This is a wonderful winter activity. The season started this weekend and runs until April. You can sign-up at any time and begin submitting your data. See the link above to learn more!

And thank you to everyone demonstrating compassion and patience with woodpeckers. They can be very destructive to human structures and we appreciate your creative thinking redirecting them.
