windows updates stalled. How do I...

I have w/XP on an acer PC, and am still pretty new to using it.

I had a power failure while it was downloading the latest updates. When I could restart, the downloading continued by itself. I thought it was done and turned off the PC, but when I turned it on the next time, the little shield says "downloading updates 92%"

It's been at 92% for a long time... I'm on dial-up so it does take a while, but doesn't seem like it should take this long.

Is there anyway to tell if it's really downloading? And if it is stalled, how do I get it started again?

if you had not set sp3 not to download it is probably sp3 and it is pretty large plus this last batch of updates there were between 12-17 of them for some people so no it could really be taking a while but shutting it down 2 times may have corrupted the download.

I re-installed the OS and sp3 and Internet Explorer 8. I've got it down to this error: Service registration is missing or corrupt http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971187 The automatic fixer doesn't fixit and I don't understand the manual instructions. It wants me to look at a registry key but doesn't specify EXACTLY which one. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\(sid)\Patches\(squid) replaced with ( and ). How do I find SID and SQUID? Was there greenboard over the studs before he installed the cement board?Either way he needed to tape seams and should have used thinset.But if there wasnt even greenboard behind there you will have problems from the get go.I would rip it out regardless.

If it's orange slime (and it looks like there is some on the curtain), then it is the bacteria Serratia marcescens. Clean it with a bleach-based cleaner.
