Update to 'How am I doing' Livingroom redo.

Ok, so I took some of the wonderful advise that everyone was so kind to share. I added some accessories and drapes and a rug. I still have not bought anything. Everything has been pilfered from the other rooms of my house - including the attic.

Here is the before.

This is my current problem area. The game table - should I have anything on top of it? Also, I don't like the fact that my neighbors house wall is the only thing you see through the window. I lost a nice juinper outside of that window. Now there is a rhodie but it is still small.

WoW! that looks great! I ditto what Red says, I'm shopping at your house! I love it! now you can buy pillows for the sofa. I think cheetah or zebrah( I am saying it like S. Africans say it) for the game table chairs. totally awesome that you have enough things in your house to pull it together so well and quickly. Sue

Currently you appear to have a sofa, two chairs, coffee table, end table w/lamp, armoire, torchiere lamp, and maybe a bookcase. And it is a walk-through area for the kitchen. Working with the furniture you have now: I would first remove the coffee table from the room. Then I would pull the area rug towards the sofa, getting the sofa front feet on the rug. I would place the two chairs on either side of the fireplace, angled toward the sofa. I would try to get the front feet of the two chairs onto the area rug - might be possible, might not. You might need a larger rug. Place the torchiere behind one of the chairs. Unless you need the armoire and bookcase (is it a bookcase?) in the room, I would lean towards getting them out of the room. I would rather see a long console table in that area. If I were budgeting for this room, I would keep the current furniture and spend my money on (pricey) custom drapes - stationary panels to dress the three windows in the room. I would add a second side table for the sofa and a narrow side table for each chair. If the current seating (sofa and two chairs) is not enough seating, I would look at maybe two ottomans that could sit in front of the large window and then be pulled into the main area of the room when entertaining a larger group.

I went through the certain size as well as the three cushion search exstensivly a little over two years ago. There was nothing good to personally try out in my local offerings. I took the plunge and ordered two sofas from Elite leather. What attracted me was all the color choices and SIZE and number of cushions. One is a long four cushion and the other a small three cushion sofa. Elite has some lesser brands where parts are made in China. I didn't want that and through correspondence with the USA maker in California I was assured my sofas where made in the USA. When the sofas arrived I (being paranoid of future squashy cushions) noticed a very slightly noticeable dip on one inner cushion corner. Elite sent me two backup cushion inserts. The dip did not get worse and I have not had to use the backups. I'm so glad of this as I was about to be unhappy. After some time and reflection I don't think it was the cushion but was a tic of overlap in the leather cover. These are very comfortable sofas. The back cushion pillows are attached to the seating cushion so it always looks neat. W: 74 Real life measurements of my 3 seater- H: 32 1/4 D: 36 W: 72 . A person up to 5' 6" can stretch out within the interior measurement. There is no cheap filler leather patched on the sides or anywhere on sofa, it's all nice leather. The underside of cushions is partially cloth so they stay put. There are zippers on back underside of seat cushions for removal and there is a zipper attaching the upper back pillow to the seat. I'm a fan of #2. I always like the look of two club chairs side by side like that. I think having them together as one unit balances out the heft of a sofa and the huge TV. I agree that it makes sense to focus on the coffee table first. Are there any textures in your room? If everything is just flat wood, paint, and upholstery, I'd suggest a coffeetable that has a bit or texture or reflectivity to it. What kind of books are you looking to store in this room? I got a three tired brass and glass coffee table from West Elm recently and it is a fantastic place to display 12 huge art books. Better than a bookshelf. When people sit on the sofa, they actually gaze that the books, pull them out and read them. I like that.

Is the popcorn ceiling a no no? It's outdated & has its issues. But, removal is a project I've avoided! lol! You have a lovely room but you are ready for something different! As others suggest, take everything out, bring in your basic sofa & comfy chair and then slowly add things back in. It will feel odd to have open areas, but give it time. Lighter rug and drapes would make a big difference and the mantle is abit overpowering.

Thanks so much! Don't even ask what the rest of my rooms look like. My spare bedroom took a big hit. I now need night-stands and lamps and my parents are coming next week for 10 days so I better get working on that. Every other room look like we just moved in because there is nothing hanging on the walls.

Wowsa Matowsa! Robynpa, your room looks fantastic! Love everything! Accessories are perfect! Table is so cool! Curtains are yummy! Rug is a beauty (a bit small, but, very, very nice!) You've got it girl!

That's the Kipling book my mother read to me when I was a little girl. I grew up loving Rudyard Kipling because of that black book. She sold it at a garage sale without my knowledge. Can you look up the publisher and year for me? I'd love to have one exactly the same (as much as it can be) again.

Hi,

Thanks again. The Kipling book is published by Doubleday & Co. printed in the U.S. and the last copyright date is 1956 by Elise Bambridge. I am not sure where I got the book but probably from family. I have had it for at least 25 years because I remember reading it in my 20's and just falling in love with The Jungle Book.

Love all the deatails and vignettes on the great tables! The two big pictures are still a little high. The blank space below is too prominent. I would lower them so they are centered between the outside pics. Bring them down a few inches and it will be perfect! Everything is coming along nicely. Enjoy!

I'm amazed you've achieved such a "complete" and organized look by utilizing what was pretty much "extra stuff!" Great job ...

My fiddly little observation is about the bird cage. In the photograph, it looks almost like it's "hiding" behind the end table, tucked towards the rear as it is. It makes it look like an afterthought, and it's too lovely for that! How does it look if you pull it forward so it's pretty much next to the table?

hey just looking again cause I love it and am thinking about the todo es slipcovers. try the birdcage on the coffee table on the end. if its too tall and it may be how about under the kudu pic? or will it fit under the game table?
Don't take back stuff for the guest room! guest rooms dont have to be fancy! just very comfy.

Hey, I was just thinking.... I just bought DH a tall 10' live indoor ("magnificent"?) palm to go into his study for $25 from Lowes. It looks great! It gives a lot of ooomph to his room and I bet that it would look fantastico in yours!
