A Little Love for the Shower Stall

In a world where the clawfoot tub is king, shower stalls get very little respect. Admit it - when you think "shower," your mind goes to cramped spaces, weird mold smells, and damp dorm bathrooms that you'd never venture into without flip-flops.

That's not really fair, though. When my husband and I designed our master bathroom last year, we did something bold - we went straight shower stall. No bathtub in sight. And you know what? It's great. It's roomy and pretty and really, really useful.

So here's a little love for that unappreciated feature, the shower stall:

FR James Construction

This shower stall has such a beachy feel - I love the bright turquoise and the very clear glass of the door.

Dan and Hila Israelevitz- Architects

Shower stalls are perfect for sleek, modern baths. I love the spa-like feel of this one.

Duvivier Architects

OK, so this tile could surround a bathtub, too - but I think that stalls lend themselves to cooler tile design. And I love this.

Speaking of spa-like, I love this spacious shower for the wooden bench.

Of course, the biggest benefit of a shower stall is that it can fit in a little, tiny space, turning even a miniscule half-bath into a full one.

Harrell Design + Build

At an architectural salvage place here in Baltimore, there is a gigantic marble shower, complete with about 6 showerheads. That's what this reminded me of (but on a slightly smaller scale). It's grandiose and dramatic and amazing.

These doors are fabulous - though I can't completely figure them out. Don't they look a little like revolving doors? Is that what they are?

This circular shower isn't exactly private, but it's pretty great.

And, of course, shower stalls are perfect for the outdoors (because face it - "outdoor bathtub" just doesn't have much of a ring to it). I love this pretty tile backsplash - so Mediterranean and so relaxing.

If I had this in my yard, I'd never shower inside. In warm weather, that is.

My wife and I will not be having a tub in our master as well and our choosing to go for a large 4'x7' curbless shower with a channel drain under the glass door.

These new channel drains look great and open the door for more layout options for tight spaces.

Removing the curb in a small bathroom can make the room look bigger.
