Outlook 2002 very slow echoing typing

I uploaded this title yesterday, but see no sign of it on the forum. So, using the same title, I'll try again.

My Outlook 2002 (going on 4 years old) has many large mail folders, the Exchange folder has over 1 Gigabyte. I think the size of my files has finally overloaded Outlook, causing the application to operate very slowly in the text creation mode. Any suggestions on the slow typing (echo - when I type I can input a full line before the text is echoed onto the page) problem? Do I need to mover more to the archive (how) or perhaps move a large size folder entirely out of Outlook, assuming I can move it back in if I need it in the future.
