Which Email Program for Windows 7

A friend of mine decided I needed a new computer,
so he bought one for me. Well, actually he bought all the parts
and we put it together. Still working some kinks out of that.
I have been using XP and OE since 2001.
Now that I have Windows 7 what email client should I use.
I really like OE and I would like it to look as much like OE as possible.
I could use Outlook but I never could get used to it before.
I miss my Outlook Express.
Any suggestions?

PB,

I have been using Thunderbird with a few add-ons on this Vista system for several years now. I have three Hotmail accounts configured through it. It does all I want it to, and more.

I downloaded it and got it set up for both my email accounts.
That was simple enough. I'm sure I'll have questions tho.

Not sinister, but like TI is an example of a "big boy" given up on a market. Almost as bad as AT&T and consumer communications... all that's left is the rather successful iPOD (think that is what is called in wireless communications - and with a touch screen I believe). AT&T is a shadow of itself, he-l it was once a bigger employer than Walmart : ( My comment that may have started this was my shopping for a new Laptop (not a notebook this time, considering a 17.3" screen - non touch) and checking on Dell and HP to see if they were still in that business. Seems both have recognized, perhaps soon enough to survive, that personal computers with a mouse and keypad are going into history. I connected this with some lament that I can't now quantify, that Microsoft sales of Windows 8, indeed computer OS, is way down. This lead me to comment that we may all live (even an old guy like me) to see the end of MS, if not that then a much smaller and less profitable company. Given Gates and others at the top of MS are working hard to give their money away before the $#&% government gobbles it up with inheritance tax. Those folks know that will result in all their hard work and creativity being wasted by people who specialize in that game. Would I sell my MS stock if I had some? Yes, but as all that I hold is in mutual funds I don't have any control, I just hope the fund managers have a brain.

I was a Netscape user also and was forced to change due to new features being added to web sites that was no longer supported by Netscape. I now use Thunderbird version 2.0.0.19 and I am able to clean forwarded messages, sometimes with difficulty. I have no problem with deleting plain text, but sometimes have trouble with text within a 'frame' or graphic images. My work-around for this is to move to the bottom of the frame and begin deleting from the bottom, or right-click on it and delete the whole frame. Usually, I can start a selection from the bottom and delete that portion. If the 'text' is really an image, the entire image has to be deleted. If all else fails, as mentioned by a poster above, you can select, copy, and then paste into a new email window. By the way, I was able to import all my old email messages into Thunderbird (from Netscape), as well as my address book. Thunderbird appears a little different to Netscape, but most of all the features are there.

Good post Bob. Mine is nothing like that- but I wish it was! The pps come as attachments to email, Windows Live Mail -I hate it. Right click on attachment pps: Mine opens little window/box in center of screen. Top left says "mail attachment" Top right has red "X". "Do you want to open this file?" "Name: Beautiful pictures.pps" "Type: Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Show" Then offers choice of "Open or "Cancel" Selecting "Open" brings message: Big Red X "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel". I do have Windows PowerPoint viewer installed- and have booted several times since then. It is in my programs list.

Do I delete each account and then recreate it as IMAP? Will I lose the e-mails that have been saved under Local Folders? " One thing . . . my "Local folders" only contain Trash & Outbox. All my other Inboxes, etc. are within separate acct folders. I.E., each other acct. contains an Inbox, Drafts, Sent, etc. - outside of "Local Folders." Anyway, there's a good chance that after you create an IMAP acct., the email that you have already downloaded using POP mail, and deleted from the server - won't show up in the IMAP Inbox. You'd have to import them back in. Just to be safe, I would export all your email first so that you have it as backup. Then make new accts as IMAP. See if everything looks correct, or if you need to import anything from the backup you just made. Finally, delete the POP accts. There is a really handy addon tool for TB : ImportExportTools https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/?src=search (That page looks complicated, but the use of the tool is not) The two different ways to export using that tool are - (and you get to the choices by right clicking on "Inbox" or any other folder) : 1) "Export folder" (w/ or w/o structure) This makes an Mbox file of everything that you export. It makes for just a few simple files that aggregate everything within the respective folders. So you will end up w/ one Inbox file, one Drafts file, etc. "Structure" just means you will keep the nested structure of the folders. The disadvantage is that you can't read them later w/o importing them back first (using ImportExportTools). 2) "Export all Messages" (and choose "eml" format here) This exports each email as a .eml file - and you can identify and read each one separately later after exporting. So if you export 500 emails, you'll get 500 .eml files. You can batch import them though using ImportExportTools. And you can read them just by clicking on them individually. There's no harm in exporting both ways if you like. Just create separate folders so you can keep it all straight. Play around with it a bit until you get the hang of it. For all the people recommending this way to do email or that - this debate has been going on for years. There are advantages and disadvantages to each - it really depends on your needs. I wouldn't say that any one of them is "unusual" as someone commented - what's unusual to one is likely normal to someone else. Personally I use them all, and all for different purposes - no one method seems to work for every purpose. I do use web based email for the most part though. I liked OE for my email, but it didn't come with my W 7 Home Premium. I downloaded Window live mail. It was frustrating until I learned about the quick access bar. Now I like it as well as OE.

BTW, I like my email on my computer. It is online with my cable server, but I set it up to come thru WLM.

Pooh Bear, I had the same problem deciding what mail program to use. I love OE. I tried Thunderbird for a while, but I just couldn't make myself like it. I had decided I would not use Windows Live Mail, but that is what I finally settled on. It has many features in common with OE, but some differences and takes getting used to, but I like it just fine. I still use my XP computer more than I do Windows 7, but that's because I prefer a desktop and the Win 7 is a laptop.

According to a betanews.com article, Opera browser (which will be switching to the Chrome-like engine for future browser releases) is discontinuing its built-in email client as part of that browser. A beta release of the new Opera Mail stand-alone email client is available for download (the first link provided in the article below). As I say, it's a beta release, but according to the first paragraph of the article, it's "based on the integrated Opera email client found in the current version of Opera 12.15 FINAL."

I don't know how a 'beta' release of a stand-alone client relates to the fact that it's from a very stable version of the client in the Opera browser, but so far my experience of the stand-alone client is positive.

Anyway.... Warning: Opera's client uses the labeling system (before Gmail had it) and does not use folders as such. It may take some getting used to for those coming from OE, but I thought I'd at least mention this new-comer to the list of offline email clients. It may be one to keep an eye on. :-)

I managed to get everything imported into it.
Still got a lot to learn tho.

Hi,

I installed Windows Live on my computer. This includes Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows Live Photo Gallery. Windows Live Messenger has been recently replaced by Skype.

I have added all my email accounts (Google, Yahoo, etc.) to Windows Live Mail. Easy to use and the Help files are pretty good.

You do not have to install all the components, just those you think are useful to you. You can also update at a later time.

I have used Thunderbird for many years..I guess since NetScape.
The only thing I don't like is the Tabs.. If U get lazy (LAZY not me :-D) they really can pile up.

I also use WLM also and it is simple to use if you use the quick access tool bar. I didn't like the big tool bar on top. There is really no learning to use it if you have used OE or other emails of that type. I just found the tools I liked to use like insert pictures, fonts, etc., right click and added them to the quick access bar, then minimized the ribbon.
