Running Windows programs in Linux

I have been in the process of converting over to Linux (Linspire) and have been using a trial version of Crossover Linux. Here is a list of Windows programs I have been able to run inside Linux.

6. Aida32 (Diagnostics program)

7. eSword (version 777)

9. Opera

Infinite Password Generator
Net Glider (browser)
Pardon Dictionary

Roman Numeral Converter
Calendar Program Pro Version 1.5
Memorex Expressit (Label Design Studio)
Spyware Terminator (not necessary in Linux)

I will be experimenting with others, but have found that just because one uses Linux, it doesn't mean that your Windows program will not run.

Crossover Linux is simply a commercial version of WINE and allows one to execute windows files with the click of a mouse. It even puts an icon on your desktop after the program is set up. Hopefully Microsoft will get more competition in the near future as Walmart and others are now selling computers with Linux already installed. Choice is good.

I read that Dell is selling computers with Linux installed.

Walmart started selling computers with Lindows installed about 2 to 3 years ago. Lindows was the forerunner of Linspire. Wonder if they still sell that?

I still feel the average computer user with only one computer needs to be cautious when installing any Linux distro. One day hopefully it will be as easy as Windows to install and operate

Yeah, we got stuck with Windows Vista! I'd as soon have Win 98 back again! It worked well for what i do on computer. I lost a lot of things in the change-over, all of my business stuff, as in business cards, records, and others! now, Windows is coming out with another trick of Wizardry, in October! I hope it works a lot better than Win Vista. Oi! Such a mess!!

what security programs are you using and are you keeping them updated and scanning regularly with them? What version of windows? Having quite a few under processes is not that abnormal windows itself has many processes running but you should be able to easily see what applications are running and know what they are. I would suggest if you do not have superantispyware and malwarebytes you get them update them and run full scans right off. SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware this is also free with option to purchase if you choose to. please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt * Please post contents of that file in your next reply. that will get you started on finding out what might be taking over.

I don't have a (phone) modem or even a land line so I can't test this but... If me, I might go to the download page: https://sourceforge.net/projects/ncid/files/ncid/1.3/ and since I'm running 64bit Debian/Ubuntu based Linux choose the appropriate "deb" package which looks to be, in my case, this one: ncid_1.3-1_amd64.deb It looks like it should install fine that way... (You may find you also need the client: ncid-client_1.3-1_all.deb, sorry, it's not clear to me.) . The other option would be to grab the source package (ncid-1.3-src.tar.gz), extract it and read the "readme".

I would agree with that statement. I run both Windows and Linspire on the same computer with no problems. One nice thing about Linux is it can be used on older computers and may bring new life to computers that would never be able to handle Windows XP or Vista. I have now come to the point that except for one or two programs that can't be replaced, Linspire is all that I need. As far as installation, it took me only ten minutes and I was surfing the internet. One can download "Freespire" for free.

You can also get Linspire 5.1 for free. Just enter the coupon code junera. You have to act like your purchasing it, but the coupon is good for the price of the download. No credit card or anything else is needed, just an email address.

I've been experimenting with Ubuntu. It's also free.

Both are much, much easier to install than Windows. You can run both from a live cd if you don't want to install.

CNR is a cool feature. Much easier than Windows for installing software.

I dual booted with Ubuntu's Dapper Drake for a few months. Two things irritated me enough to remove it. One was obvious, with any dual boot you need to select an operating system as the computer starts. More annoying was the need to login with name and password every time. Having got used to hitting the on switch and walking away while my confuser fired up I found I had to stick around to do that.
