running programs

Oh, my, I think I have a problem. I just checked to see how many programs were running on the computer because it has gotten extremely slow and there were, under the application tab, 38 that I counted. Then under the processes tab there were 78 items listed.

I cannot believe they should all be running but I don't know how they got in there because I just checked it a few weeks ago and there were only 2 running at that time. Thing is, I don't know what is safe to delete in that mess and what should stay there.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance, I really do appreciate your input. Just please remember that I am really stupid when it comes to the computer so you'll have to draw pictures for me to understand you. LOL BT

what security programs are you using and are you keeping them updated and scanning regularly with them? What version of windows?
Having quite a few under processes is not that abnormal windows itself has many processes running but you should be able to easily see what applications are running and know what they are.
I would suggest if you do not have superantispyware and malwarebytes you get them update them and run full scans right off.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware this is also free with option to purchase if you choose to.
please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

that will get you started on finding out what might be taking over.

You might give us a bit of info on your computer ie make and model and what Operating system you are running. Vista has more required running processes than XP

Problem Solved!!! Youngest son called home from college and immediately knew the answer...which I will now share with you: In VMware Fusion taskbar click on Virtual Machine>CD/DVD>CD/DVD Settings. In Settings, put a check in the box "connected" and click "Automatically detect physical CD/DVD drive" Insert CD/DVD in mac and Windows automatically recognizes and installs pc based programs. Hmm, I had not read the whole MS page but basically you only need to follow the first 2 instructions. I have never had to use those other instructions myself. Remember that if you get flustered just click the Cancel button to get out of where you are. There is nothing to be afraid of when using System File Checker. You It simply goes through your computer checking all the operating system files and replaces those which are corrupt or missing. The need for the CD is so it can get the needed files to install for you. The slight downside is that it takes the computer back to when your particular CD was created which means you will be behind on security updates and possibly a service pack. No big deal there either, you simply go to the windows update site and the computer grabs whatever it needs. You are doing nothing wrong. Who knows why those files went missing. Perhaps/probably it was due to the power outage. You can of course extract and install each of those files if you wish to avoid using SFC. Follow the instructions here to do that for each file. You do not have to do them all at one time. Try one, see how it goes then do others as you feel up to the task.

"Learning Linux - best to be middle aged - like 16." Well my friend, that may be true. Even though I may never "learn" Linux, it really doesn't matter (I never was an "expert" at Windows either) since I can now run it just like Windows and have the satisfaction that that the operating system now belongs to me. It is also nice to not be required to have a super computer to keep up with the Joneses (check out requirements for Vista) to be able to do the tasks that need to be done. I'll be satisfied just to learn some basic commands and leave the heavy stuff to the teenagers.
