How do I force W7 to use my selected driver?

I am having problems getting a drive that will work with Windows 7 64bit to support my Palm PDA and Palm Desk Top.

I installed a USB Infrared dongle as there was no 64 bit driver for the Palm DT. Windows 7 immediately installed an infrared driver, which works sometimes, not at the present. I then looked on the infrared dongle supplier and found they have a W7 64 bit driver for the their USP/IR albeit they say its doesn't work for everybody...whatever that means.

I downloaded the drive and used the W7 device manager to "update" the driver (which is shown as working properly by the device manager) and the "browse" to go to the driver provided by the IR Dongle supplier. When I click to install my selected (browsed to in C:\programfiled(x86)\MosUred\Win64 which appears to have a file as the W7 installer tells me "...best drive already installed"... I think the "best" is the one W7 installed on its own.
