For those of you that want to continue to block SP3 from auto updates and not let it get on your pc microsoft has a tool out that will block it for a period of time. Here is the link to that page.

Here are two very good articles from PC Pitstop about many of the continuing problems showing up from SP3, it is now apparent that many people that thought they had a smooth install of SP3 actually did not, things they had not noticed are now showing up, some programs are not working or not working properly, many people lost every single restore point on their pc and SP3 did not create one as it should have so they are left with no restore points. For many it has caused some serious registry corruption by creating a lot of junk registry entries.

Keep an eye on your pc if you have already installed sp3 and if you are not noticing any problems with it or other programs say some big thank yous.

If you have not installed sp3 yet you are doing right by waiting. I have not and likely will not.

reading the comments after the articles is eye opening to say the least. I have to think those are only the people who know where to go to post about their problems, how many out there have no clue and are still trying to figure out what the heck happened.

I got one of those phone calls last night! She was in tears and had no idea what had happened, all she did was do her windows updates. That was all I had to hear unfortunately.

The best tool as always is to be informed!

I understand one computer failing due to SP3 is too many. however the article raven links to "pc pitstop article" shows no reference to numbers being affected. There are many reports of good installs of SP3 - remember that mostly those who complain are those who had problems, those with a clean, good install just move on merrily.

Item #1 in the article perhaps only affects those with Symantec products, not necessarily the masses.

Item #2 The writer tried to minimise his restore point hard drive space to an absolute minimum and got caught. Is that the fault of MS? I think not.

Items #5 and 6 There have been write ups and as I understand it many of those with problems were installing SP3 over only SP1. They had to remove SP3, install SP2 then SP3. Dirty? Of course but surely SP2 was a more important update than SP3 might be and should be on all computers. (Personal observation of course, not necessarily a fact)

Whenever anyone does an update of this magnitude they should take the precaution of backing up all their personal data before updating. Those who have Acronis True Image or similar programs should create a full backup of the hard drive.

I can't find anywhere where it says on the box that Norton Antivirus 2009 has a firewall. But I read on another forum that this particular version does have a firewall inbound only. This is very confusing. If I do have a firewall from Norton then I need to shut off the Windows Firewall right? If so then how do I get rid of that red shield with the X in the middle of it? Jane no doubt it will be an Apple commercial if it is not already! I saw one last night that could have been about this reboot over and over situation, have to admit those commercials are funny. IF you have your computers fully updated with all the windows updates and you do not want to tackle this now you do not have to (totally up to you), this is not a super critical update like sp2 was, it is rated moderate. There are some additional changes it makes to the system itself which microsoft would like people to install. But I know a lot of people have decided to at least wait some time to see if there might be some hotfixes that come out to handle some of the issues that are cropping up and there has been discussion in the microsoft forums that this time they may actually put out a hotfix for some of the problems prior to pushing out sp3 in auto update. So waiting is not a bad idea at this point. I would suggest though that you uninstall your IE 7 through add remove before you do install sp3, because if you do not you will not be able to do so at any time in the future and it also affects the ability to try to do fixes on IE7 should they be needed. You can just take it out, put in sp3 when you decide to, then put IE7 back. Or just stay as you are and continue getting your other regular critical windows updates. It is your choice. At this point in time they will not stop you from getting your windows updates just because you do not have sp3, so don't be concerned about that.

You're infected and should go to a Malware removal forum see link provided. MS Removal Tool is a computer infection from the same family as System Tool. This infection is also categorized as a rogue anti-spyware program as it pretends to be an anti-virus program, but is actually a program that displays fake security alerts and scan results in order to make you think your computer is infected. no you do not want to stop getting your windows updates they are very important to keep your pc secure and functioning properly. What we were discussing is setting the option in automatic updates to only notify you that you have updates ready but not automatically install them. That way you can wait to see if anything shows up here or other forums saying that one of the updates is causing big problems for people. then you can hold off on that update till they get the bugs out. SP3 is one of the service pack updates that has been put out through auto updates but it breaks many computers so some people are choosing not not to install it on their pc, there is even a blocking tool put out by microsoft to stop it from being sent to you. I personally much prefer to have my settings at Notify me but do not install, then I have the option of deciding what to install and when to install. I normally install all updates once I know they are not causing any problems. Watching this forum and other security forums on the Tuesdays that the updates are sent out is a good way to find out if you should wait to get a specific update. If no one screams that it broke their pc then it is probably ok. If you do not want to be bothered then leaving it set to do it all automatically behind the scenes is ok too. It is a personal choice. To change how it updates you can look at the settings area by going to Start> control panel> automatic updates. There you will see you can change the options from automatic to Notify me first to do nothing etc.

Absolutely owbist, back up everything and do an image if you can with Acronis. And follow all the download and install directions to the letter which means turning off all antivirus programs, firewalls, spyware protection and any other running programs, even better install it in safe mode where you have only minimal processes running. Using the cd or the full version is much better than doing it through update from everything I have seen and read on all the tech forums, you get the full install and it seems to go easier. So having the cd is a good thing plus you have it to keep should you ever need to format your pc and need it again.

There just are no guarantees that things will go well, many thought they did have a good install and things are now showing up, why that is who knows, it could be specific to something they have on their pc that sp3 was not compatible with, think of how many programs there are out there, it is impossible to make any thing compatible with all. (however the big companies work with microsoft to make these things work prior to release that is why the beta testing for so long, so it doing what it is with programs like Norton and some of the other big names is not a good reflection)

Unfortunately there were more people that had their restore points disappear than just that one instance and they had not changed anything so it is definitely affecting restore points on some computers.

I have kept my pc fully updated since sp2 so there fore I have pretty much everything I need from sp3 already, at this point my decision is not to install with a wait and see point of view. What each person choses to do is up to them, it is however essential to know all the information so you can do so in an educated manner. That is why I am posting when something new has been discovered that they did not know, that way we stay educated as to what needs to be done and what to expect. But then you also have to expect the unexpected! LOL

I had intended to slipstream SP3 with my XP Pro but on reading the issues with some who tried installing SP3 over SP1 I have hesitated. Naturally I would do SP2 then SP3 but so far I have read little as to whether this is effective or not. Laziness on part art of course but........... one day

Owbist on dslreports Bill Castner and some other MVP's did talk about slipstreaming and how to go about it so if you do some searches over there on the microsoft area you will likely find it. They did advise using the full version for slipstreaming.
