New info on .NET upates and ones to come

In the paid version of windows secrets newletter there was a very good article by Susan Bradley concerning the troublesome .NET updates that have been sent out through windows updates and also info about the new upcoming version 4 .NET. Here is that article.

While many of you are still digging out from June patches, there's more .NET updates in your future.

I'm about to yell "uncle!" when it comes to .NET, and I'm sure many of you are as well. Microsoft is releasing updates for .NET 3.5 at the same time it's bringing out version 4.0.

Are you ready for .NET 4? I'm certainly not!

I just about groaned when I saw Microsoft's preview listing of this week's updates more .NET patches. I'm still not done with the June 8 .NET releases, and here comes .NET Framework 4.0 Client Profile for XP, Vista, and Win7 (detailed in Microsoft support article 982670).

But wait! There's more! In addition to .NET 4.0, Microsoft is releasing three rollup updates for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1: KB 982524 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, KB 982525 for Vista and Server 2008, and KB 982526 for Win7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

And for only $19.95 plus shipping, Microsoft will add a bonus patch, KB 956250, that also fixes .NET 3.5 SP1 problems on Windows Vista and Server 2008 platforms. Okay, I was just kidding about the $19.95. But I am still a bit unclear as to what KB 982525 and KB 956250 actually do fix.

âº What to do: Seriously, like those late-night sales pitches most of us ignore, just pass on these offers until I tell you they are needed. None of these updates patches security risks, and they could impact business applications. For example, there are reports that some installtions of Sage Timberline, an accounting application for the Construction Industry, are affected.

Another solution for reinstalling .NET

If you're still having the .NET reoffering problem but are not comfortable using the somewhat intimidating .NET removal tool (info page)

I've mentioned in earlier columns, there's another method to try Â courtesy of my fellow MVP Andy Goodman.

, he states that he's had luck using these steps:

Download KB 974417 manually and extract the patch to a local folder; then, manually install the update from that folder."

Also from her article is info on the end date of support for firefox 3.5

"Firefox 3.5 gets two more months of life

For those still running Firefox 3.5, the June 22 version 3.5.10 update fixes nine vulnerabilities. Firefox 3.5 will continue to receive security updates for two more months; after that, you'll need to move to version 3.6.

Firefox 3.6 users will also see an update to version 3.6.4. This update runs Adobe Flash and Apple's QuickTime plug-ins in a separate process, which should keep the browser up and running if these plug-ins crash.

Thank you Raven. Right or wrong, I have not been downloading net updates since I had an on going problem downloading any updates.

The dot net updates are a cinch to install. For each update do the following:

1. Download and install and run dot net cleanup tool which removes all dot net stuff from your comp - only takes about an hour or so. Probly run it twice.

2. Download all previous dotnet updates and everything and store em on the desktop in order - only takes an hour or so maybe a bit more.

3. Intall each one in order - probly shut down security programs and go off line just to make sure. Only takes an hour or so.

4. Back online and check Windows updates - there will be some - and install them. Hope they work. Allow and hour or so.

5. Wait a day or so for another dot net update to haunt your task bar.

6. Go to Windows Update > Custom > DotNet Updates > hide em.......

Worst movie experience was just lately. Ed and I got to the movie theater on time (which is a small miracle for us). We buy snacks and then hand the usher our tickets and he directs us to the theater that ours is playing in. We sit there for 20 minutes of commercials and I am getting antsy because the movie should have started by now. Then there is some more trivia junk playing for 10 more minutes, finally I got mad and walked out to the usher. I complained and he just looks at me kind of stupidly and tells me I can get a refund if I like. I tell him that is not the point. Some of us pay babysitters to go out and expect to only be gone so long! I call home, tell the sitter we will be later than I thought and go back in to the movie. After another 15 minutes of trailers the movie started... It turned out that the little doofus directed us to the wrong theater that was playing the same movie at a later time. D'OH! I wanted to bean him with a Goober!

You can pick out that filler depending on what they used - I tried it just to make sure in case we wanted to use something else/tile in the future as I used a lot of screws. I didn't want the kitchen higher than the living room. It would be a nightmare to do, but you can do it. The luan is what is causing the problem - that needs to be pulled up and replaced with plywood not luan. Standard practice is luan and no one we talked to was willing to use nicer plywood even at our insistance. Luan is the smooth surface - the didn't need to use something different. We made the choice to use better plywood as we choose DIY/better materials with the money we saved on labor (so, we probably aren't saving any money and its a lot of work, but we are getting some better stuff). Even if you put the vinyl under the cabinets, vinyl is easy to cut, but it also depends if they used the glue down method vs. tape. We taped ours down just in case I wanted to change my mind in the future or we ruined it redoing the hardwood floors or something else given we are redoing the rest of the house. We glued our one seam under the fridge and we probably didn't need vinyl under there but we have the ice maker and I know what's under there (I also put it under the oven but not dishwasher except where I could reach). The real questions are how did the put it down and they probably are trying to do what is easiest for them. I would want the 1/4 inch luan removed and replaced with 1/4 plywood, screw down (not nail) with deck screws so they will not rust and are solid and they need to be counter-sinked, it filled (let it set for a few days), sanded smooth, then use the tape method for the vinyl, cover with molding. (I did everything but lifting the plywood and the molding myself (husband did that), so it is an easy thing to do, so don't let them tell you how hard it is and I am not a big woman). Putting down vinyl is one of the easiest things we've done (and windows surprisingly). Debi, were you the one who they put the wrong color in? If you were, I'm not so sure given this is the second mistake, I'd want them fixing it.

If you want slow and low, you might want an old style Crock Pot from a garage sale. I forget when they changed the temperatures, but they used to be made for 8-10 hour cooks, and now they are meant to be done in 4-5 hours. There are ones that have fancy temperature settings, however, that let you have some control. The crock pots that just have low and high apparently are meant to get to the same temperature on both--just past boiling--but the low cycles slower and cooks slower. Some have a keep warm setting that some people have found works well for them with the old fashioned crock pot recipes. Crock pots were invented by a guy who wanted to make cholent--a bean stew that used to be made in the banked fires of community bread ovens overnight for the Jewish sabbath. He really expected his to run for 18 hours or more. They were very straightforward. The new kind confuse me with their too high temperatures. The whole premise was supposed to be that you could leave it all day without touching it. The government got into it and said that people would open them early and eat foods that hadn't had a chance to come to safe temperature, so even though people have been cooking this way for millennia and living to tell the tale, we have to be protected from those who won't follow instructions. Sigh. I can't recommend models. I can just say to research well and be aware of what the new one can do and how it fits your expectations.

I guess lining the metal pans with Saran wrap would work. You just want to be certain the new soap does not come in contact with metal. (Fresh soap still contains free lye that will eat holes in metal until the soap fully saponifies.) Juice cartons would work as molds. So do the plastic candy molds. You can sometimes find these at secondhand stores. Just be certain whatever you use as a mold is impervious to the lye and is flexible so you can remove the hardened soap. Usually PVC pipe molds are made by carefully cutting the pipe in two longitudinally so you end up with two long "half-pipe" pieces (if you have been watching the Olympics, you'll know the half-pipe shape - LOL!). Then you use hose clamps or very heavy duty rubber bands to hold the two pieces together while the fresh soap is poured in (of course you have capped off the bottom so the soap doesn't flow out there). After the soap has set up, you remove the clamps and the two pieces of PVC, then slice the soap into rounds. I've never used a crock pot to make soap. Usually soapers recommend ANY pans, utensils, etc. that you use for making soap are dedicated to soap... and never go back to kitchen use. Sometimes you can find scales at secondhand stores, especially the one that measures 0 ounces up to 16 ounces (1 pound). Have you checked your library for soap books yet?

Okay - I'm a bit confused. I went to do Windows Update and it is suggesting several dot net updates - and claiming some are high priority. These are the ones:

KB 982524
KB 979909
KB 979906

Should I avoid these? Should I keep on avoiding dot net updates? I realize that I already took these updates on my old laptop at work (when I was getting drivers for my touchpad - having bought this laptop used and the previous owner wiped the drive clean and reinstalled operating system and drivers - and missed the touchpad drivers). Should I just leave it be on my work laptop if things seem to be functioning alright? If these net updates are a problem, what would the problem look like?

Since I maintain my desktop and my daughters, my husband's laptop and my two laptops (good one for home and old, but lovable one at work) and my mother's desktop, I'd love a guideline about these net updates (all computers have XP, except husband's laptop with Vista).

What I have chosen to do a while back was leave the .NET as it came on my windows computers and block the updates. I do not use anything that as of yet has required me to get the newer versions of .NET. But everyone has to decide how to proceed on theirs. From Susan's article you might want to pay attention to this line.
"None of these updates patches security risks, and they could impact business applications."

they rate them as high but they are not security risks.

Thanks, Raven. So I won't update .net. But what is .net and how would I knnow if I'm using anything that requires me to get newer versions?

Also - should I uninstall any updates I might have previously accepted? Or just leave well enough alone if it wasn't causing a problem.

just leave the ones you have as is, if any program you run needs the later versions of .net it will tell you that it needs the specific version. If programs run fine then they do not need it. Often times in the specs of programs you go to download it will say requires .NET and tells you the version most will also ask if you want to download that version also.
