I had the black screen this morning I haven't had it for a while someone suggested this is it safe and would you recommend it? I don't know anything bout registrys

I forgot to mention I am using XP and Windows 8
This happened as I was reading an email from a particular person. Afte I rebooted nd got on line again I read more emails and then went back to that email to try and read it (it pops ups but for a second) and the black screen happened agin. I had this situation several months ago and can't remember how it was resolved.

Tell us the what operating system you use and exactly when you get the black screen.

Sounds like the Vista Black screen issue, and a registry cleaner will not fix that issue.

Thanks, that's were I was when the Icon became unresponsive and I decided to "exit" it and post here. I had done a properties and gave it only a quick look, seeing something (poor memory) about desktop... then I click (left) on the icon and a small display/dialog box came up showing some thermometer style meters with a horizontal orientation. I couldn't get the display to disappear so I clicked the "exit" button. I have Firefox and Thunderbird and they try to connect add-ons at every update, it seems. I try to cancel the add-ons, I have enough trouble trying to remember all the features of the core application.

Thanks, I'm running XP Home. I did posts a number of times on Vista starting a couple of years ago when I purchased an Acer notebook with Vista. I had a lot of problems and one a hardware or driver problem that I couldn't get sufficient help from the supplier on, so I returned the machine and purchased a old stock Gateway notebook that had/has XP. The Smart Defrag is still running this morning, ran all night and has now been active for at least 30 hours, it now shows about 75% done. I understand, if this defrag works, not sure how I tell, then I will not run XP Defrag as per advice here, thanks.

PC losing last four days

Tried all options you have said - menu that came up still wouldn't activate. Googled replacing cmos battery/pc won't boot and was advised to boot without the battery. Did that and it worked, menu now was accessable and working. Reinstalled Windows Vista (this PC is now on my dining room table) everything working fine. Shut down PC and daughter-in-law took it home. We did not replace either new or old battery, putting a battery in is what started out problem to begin with. Daughter-in-law sets up PC, boots up and is back to the begining problem!!! Menu shows up but is not usable. PC is going to the shop. Will let you all know what the repairman does, it is now beyond my efforts. Thanks for all the advice.

Read the pc mag recent 2017 article quickly. Mr Rubenking says Windows Defender is the base line most of the other Antivirus programs strive for - so it sort of stands to reason others would strive for a higher standard. He mentions but vaguely though the newest version of win10 & Edge browser which are so much more secure currently that the other AV programs are not always up to snuff with it combined with windows defender. Microsoft doesn't seem to talk much about win10's current state of security with newer SLAT & hyperviser, Rubenking barely mentions it sadly - it would be nice to hear his opinion in detail with some of his type or style of AV testing.

If that E-Mail is causing an issue then don't open it. Delete it.

I did delete it and told the interested party. Thanks I thought tht is what you all said about registry cleaners Thanks I'll do a virus scan.

Well if you're going to scan for virus no sense is using the one you have installed right because it should have caught it to begin with. So try a scan with updated Malwarebytes. I don't thing the black screen issue is related to any virus though but it's always good to run a scan just in case.

Next thing Google (XP Black screen) you might see something that relates to your issue.

ASC is a much more powerful utility than many users think and it is potentially harmful. If it has to be used it should only be used in the default settings. In the same vein of service is CCleaner which too must be used in default settings, but is much more reliable.

I rarely recommend any registry tool/application or utility. However, on occasion a registry has to be checked and orphaned entries removed. For example, after removing a prior AV. CC has historically been safe and does provide a backup option. The key is if you do not know what the entry pertains to leave it alone.

Finally, there has been some bad press this year regarding ASC and copyrights. Many users, myself included, have ceased to use the application.
