PC losing last four days

My son's computer is WindowsVista and this morning when they turned it on it had lost the last 4 days of any saved work, game logs, and icons. They ran IObit Malware fighter, Advanced System Care and Avast virus scan and came up with nothing. All programs were updated before running. Anyone ever heard of this before, and how to stop it? Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is the computer set to the correct date?

If it is not keeping proper time after being set, the CMOS battery on the motherboard is probably dying

Frank, in the apricots I had to thin out some PC damage but it was overall pretty minor. Sometimes I get some OFM in them but this year there is little of that. The biggest problem I have had is brown rot shoot blight, the Hunza type cots seem to be highly susceptible to that. That plus the low yield means those guys are probably history in a few years. The pears just get cosmetic damage from the PC. A few get pretty distorted but I need to thin anyway and I can thin out all of those. But most of the remaining pears have a PC blemish on them somewhere. Pears are very hard on the larvae, I have not seen any surviving. The worst pome fruits are the crabapples, I had several PC mature in them. I should have more aggressively thinned out the bad apples before they dropped. JBs have been very minor for me the past several years. I squished them for a couple years and that was the end of it. I get a couple rose chafers every year (either that or some other very similar big green beetle), so few as to not cause appreciable damage. Scott

As much as I would like to think I would like a small little cottage house by the sea, I would probably get very cold and bored with it's short growing season, I'm somewhat of a southerner like that. Also, as much as I gripe about humidity and heat I probably couldn't live without it. I could never imagine living in California where it is constantly perfect. So, if anything I'd probably want to live somewhere in the East Coast and perhaps somewhere in the Rhine Valley in France or Germany. I am terribly nostalgic and love all old styles, so cottage style gardening appeals to me the most. Formal gardens with certain degrees of whimsy or strangeness a la Alice in Wonderland or Ladew Topiary Gardens. I like the idea of old world homesteads somewhat cut off from the world. If I ever amount to money after college I'd love to have either like an old Victorian or some sort of farmhouse that can just be a retreat. Homes seem far too disposable these days, I like a place that will last me a lifetime. I must be a reincarnate of some stuffy nobleman, my tastes are so OLD.

Today arrived. My husband asked that we do the exploratory last night to give him more time. BY bedtime I had dosed my friend with two tabs of tramadol. This was the start of a really bumpy night. I picked him up to enjoy the comfort and smells of the bed but he could not settle and jumped off to vomit for the last time. We had to give a second dose of tramadol sooner then allowed along with a dose of ace. I had asked for rimadyl hoping to pick it up this morning. There is no need for the rimadyl. We all are at peace. My husband collpased in the garage as I was gathering feed for the chickens. He finally understood . He slept on the bathroom floor with my boy . As much as he drives me crazy I have a good hubby. I knew I would find peace once this all ended. I have done it before. For those looking for help ...... you need to be the voice of your pet. YOu need to stand up and take control when the vet still pushes his agenda. I refused exploratory surgery cause his tongue was already showing anemia. I did not want him in pain from his illness and the surgery. I am pissed that I did not have a stronger pain med. Last night was horrific. I found that keeping a journal of his food,medicine and activity helped me to make decisions. I cringed seeing the clock strike 5 knowing I only had the internet for comfort. It was the internet that told me about cat food and baby food to be offered if a dog refuses his food not my vet. So a warm huge hug to those who post their troubles and woes since it lays a path for those who follow. There is no high jacking of this thread. We are all searching for how to make the best choice. I made the best choice early this morning. I am crushed , beaten but at peace. I thank you . To arkansas-girl........... My first dog was also a labrador retriever. She presented with chronic ear infections and ruptured eardrums. In fact our local vet told me after the third ear rupture that he can not help me. I asked who should I go see and he said "IDK". SHe also licked her paws raw and had her skin turn black along her abdomen. After many months we ended the process with her being placed on allergen shots and prednisone. I would record your dog's food and her activiities and health history such as her skin condition, ear issues, weight gain or loss. I would also change her diet to simple protein such as deer, bison, or rabbit feed. Do not feed her any pork, beef, chicken and turkey or lamb. The former all eat grass where the latter all eat corn. NO store bought treats ,give veggies and fresh fruit instead I would apply A&d ointment to her paws and then place socks over them using vet wrap to hold in place. You could even use baking soda or epsom salt washes by letting her stand in a warm pan / bucket or bathtub. I would treat her paws as if she has a chemical burn and allergies. When a dog has pain they lick the site...... her feet hurt. This is not a simple fix and the allergy testing is not cheap . I would change the diet to the above mentioned. YOu need to be diligent cause some of the above diet has potato as a starch which is also an allergen. It sucks to have a problem and no solution. It is maddening to be so vocal and have no one listen. I hope what I post helps.

did you try doing a simple system restore to the date before all this happened? that would be my first try. Just google system restore vista for instructions, very simple to do just choose the date and have it restore to that day it is fully reversible too.

If it is not that old it should not already be the CMOS but I guess he could have got a bad battery.

Opened the pc, wrote down number on battery and bought a new one. Installed new one, now pc will only boot to a menu "restore Windows" and/or "hit f11 for setup". Well I can't get into either option, nothing happens. I reinstalled the old battery and get the same thing. Any ideas?

Can you boot the pc to the advanced boot options menu?

Restart the pc or power it of and turn it on keep tapping the f8 key during it's attempt to restart, if successful you should get a black screen with white letters. If you can get that far then select using the arrow keys Repair your computer then hit enter.

Do you have any disks? On a working Vista or win 7 computer you can make a repair disk and use it on the troubled pc. The repair disk will give you the same options as the advanced boot options.

Did you remove the power cord prior to replacing the CR2032 CMOS battery?

Is it possible you have the battery upside down? not suggesting you are foolish but these things are very easy to do.

Is the clock and date maintaining the correct time and date now?

My son bought disks from Microsoft or maybe HP a couple months ago. I don't know if they are repair disks, recovery or complete Vista disks yet. Did unplug power cord when taking battery in and out. Will check it out with the disks Tuesday, son doesn't live that near to me but is bringing the pc here then. Will know more about it then.

One of the above... those are the most popular/typical BIOS setup keys to press at the first screen you see when starting the computer.

Perhaps read that first screen 'quickly' for proper key press... or just try them all until you get the BiOS setup screen,,,, then read the instructions & Reset the bios to Defaults once there.

Most probably the reason he lost four days is an improper reboot/shut down & system restore automatically ran the last previous restore point it had made. Which for some reason was four days old.

Tried all options you have said - menu that came up still wouldn't activate. Googled replacing cmos battery/pc won't boot and was advised to boot without the battery. Did that and it worked, menu now was accessable and working. Reinstalled Windows Vista (this PC is now on my dining room table) everything working fine. Shut down PC and daughter-in-law took it home. We did not replace either new or old battery, putting a battery in is what started out problem to begin with. Daughter-in-law sets up PC, boots up and is back to the begining problem!!! Menu shows up but is not usable. PC is going to the shop. Will let you all know what the repairman does, it is now beyond my efforts. Thanks for all the advice.

Repair shop thankfully not needed. Daughter-in-law unplugged all the cables inside the PC, then plugged them all back in, also installed the new battery and the PC now works, ha, it even keeps time. Hubby made a little comment when he heard us talking about the PC not working again, the comment, "maybe a wire got jiggled loose in transporting it home". Hate say it, but he was right!!! And he doesn't even know how to turn on a computer!!! I'm crossing my fingers to keep it running.
