I don't know about the ASC software, but, with regular defrag and depending on your OS, the process can sometimes get slowed down by other things running in the background to the point that the defrag starts over each time it is interrupted (I've even seen this caused by a screensaver).

Yes, I've seen the interrupt/restart problem and have in those cases (running MS Window Defrag) I have had to boot up in Safe Mode, before running defrag.

This doesn't seem to be the case for the subject defrag. I watched for about an hour (watching TV) and never saw a reset, just a very slow progress....must be very through.

Its probably moving every single file on your hard drive to the writers idea of the perfect optimised world.
You might want to think about disabling windows maintaince defrags or it may rearrage the furniture making each and every defrag take longer and longer.

I'd be curious;
How big is your hard drive and how much free space?

mikie, I think you have something there. The Smart Defrag is a IObit product.

My HD is 67G and it has 41G free.

I'm running Smart Defrag again, it is now up to 54% complete, and it started up where I stopped it this morning. Smart Defrag has been running for about 4 hours this cycle, total run time in the range of 16 hours.

Jerry I seem to recollect from way back that you are running Vista? If so the default is to run a defrag automatically every 14 days I think.

If this is the case then as Mickie notes you will be creating work for the computer to straighten out the work done by the Smart Defrag program

Thanks, I'm running XP Home. I did posts a number of times on Vista starting a couple of years ago when I purchased an Acer notebook with Vista. I had a lot of problems and one a hardware or driver problem that I couldn't get sufficient help from the supplier on, so I returned the machine and purchased a old stock Gateway notebook that had/has XP.

The Smart Defrag is still running this morning, ran all night and has now been active for at least 30 hours, it now shows about 75% done.

I understand, if this defrag works, not sure how I tell, then I will not run XP Defrag as per advice here, thanks.

Smart Defrag did finally complete. Some numbers it gave include before and after fragmentation of 4.27% and 0.1%, just couldn't Defrag some files. I also see in the memory visual map provided some blocks coded: MFT could that be Master File Table? Surprised by how many blocks are shown if it is memory management tables. Not important, just a number.

I can't say I see any difference in how the computer performs, but that was always the case after running MS Defrag.

I'll live with the new Defrag program for now...

Well now your computer is sorted by Smart Defrag it may prove interesting to try it again in a couple of days. As it has moved everything to suit itself the next defrag should be short and sweet hopefully.

There are three levels to the program.
1. Defrag only
2. Fast Optimize
3. Deep Optimize
You can choose by a drop down box. I have been using this program for a couple of years (since beta---now it is up to version 1.20 and have always liked the results). It never takes more than 10 minutes tops (usually less than two minutes) with the deep optimize option and I have 100 gig hard drives running 7200 rpm on all of my machines both laptops and desktops.

mdr..thanks for the insights. I took the system as delivered, and the "defrag only" - I take it you see benefits in the deep optimize, I have no idea what that means.

I do have version 1.20. The automatic run is set for 10 PM on every other Sunday... again a "factory default".
