My mother used to have an old metal trash can lid that she filled with birdseed each morning and put on the ground of her patio. She'd sit on her lounge chair next to it with her dog and enjoy the birds feeding. The dog just slept through all the activity. The seed was usually pretty much gone by noon.

This is a great guide, however it just glosses over the basics, for a more in depth guide I highly recommend this article HERE where it really breaks down the entire process for beginners looking to pick up Birding.
