Attempt to change registry 'SystemGuard Name: Internet Explorer..

About once a day I get this message from McAfee to the affect that an attempt at a registry change has been detected "SystemGuard Name: Internet Explorer Security Zones" and asks do I want to accept or refuse the change.

I have been rejecting it but it is quite persistant.

Any suggestions.

Something is trying to Hijack your browser. Keep refusing the change.
It's either a website you are visiting or a program that you've installed trying to install a BHO (browser helper object) in Internet Explorer.
It would be nice to find out what is trying to change the registry. Does McAfee give any details.

I cannot figure out how to copy MacAfee so these are approximations of the messages: And I am not sure they are related to the messages in the OP.

Details gives many " SystemGuards has allowed a one time change [Here I am confused because each time mentioned in the OP I said do not allow.]

Then Details has a paragraph about four security zones

Then Rule Type registry

Then Process C:\ProgramFiles\MSN\MSNCcorefiles\msn.exe

Then process description msn

Then process publisher microsoft

Then process version [several lines of numbers]Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings\ZoneMap\Domains\//@mail.mar@/

do you happen to still have the paper work that came with it like the directions and the instructions manual that will have all your default info in it and how to reset it. If not look on the bottom for the model and google that you should be able to go to the manufacturer site and find the manuals. Did you set up your router originally with it connected to a desktop computer, in other words which pc did you install the software on? The router is setup on the family PC not my Laptop. Unplugging the router (and modem if one) itself from power and powering down all the computers, then power up the modem if you have cable first then after a while power up the router and once it is fully up then power up the various computers, often makes a big difference. I think we have a modem and a router for Xbox and laptops. are you just using the Vista built in firewall? Yes.I'm using the windows firewall. what are you using is it cable or dsl or what for internet? My son says it's cable/DSL internet. have you done all your windows updates? Yes.Except for three optional ones. I'm confused about resetting the router. That would be on the main computer. Will this help my laptop internet connection?

I dunno,, some thoughts; You can open a command prompt, or maybe type CMD in the run line, and type in at the prompt ; traceRt www.yahoo.com and see if it works to completion,,, to stop it CtrL+C if needed. If it doesnt resolve that url name into a longer named url and IP#'s... and the same down the list of hops,,,, there is a command you might try to flush your dns cache;;; ipconfig /? one of the options should be to Flush DnS cache,,do that like this most likely;; ipconfig /flushdns Then try the 'traceRt www.yahoo.com again and see if it works. If still not working next would be you Might want to look in IE internet Options, under the connections tab. Probably should be set to never dial a connection.. then push the LAN button while there, and uncheck all the boxes there if checked. Another thing you might look at is windows services,,, you might right click the myComputer icon and select Manage. Down near the bottom you should see Services,, expand that out until you see a list of services,,, one of the services is DNS ,,, if it doesnt say Automatic and show as Started,,, double click it,, set it to auto,, and push the start button. I dont know if you understand the HOSTS file,, something may have blocked everything... might look in it -- it has a small explanation on top that maybe you can understand. Sounds like you have a google search bar and it knows its own ip. I hate search bars. heh.

Maureen there was recently a news story about an adoptee in her late 70's or early 80's who found her birthmother who was nearly 100. And the mother was happy to meet her child, who was conceived by rape. So just because someone is elderly doesn't mean they might not want to know what became of their child. I think lots of us have fantasies of the "what if I'd have had a different family" but I think that is completely different than the reality adoptees live with of truly not knowing where they came from. Hopefully the move to open adoptions will be helpful in that regard. I think wonderful people can adopt, but I long for a world where every woman who wants to keep her child will receive the help she needs to get through whatever it is that prevents her from parenting her child..whether it's simply being too young (she won't be too young forever) or too poor (with what it costs to adopt, a woman and child could live pretty well for a while) or has an unfortunate life that limits her options (let's provide some support and help). A child belongs with her mother/family. Giving up your baby can be a permanent solution that you quickly regret, to a temporary tough situation. Sorry about your passwords, I had no idea that you hadn't saved them somewhere safe. The missing items may have been your add ins, which are usually the source of IE shutting down. Internet Explorer should not have updated unless it has been attempting to update and could not because the browser was unhealthy. Have you seen any Windows or Internet Explorer updates fail just prior to the issues? What were the names of the add ins that you were using? It sounds as if the green circle may have been WOT (Web of Trust). You can download it from https://www.mywot.com/ . The tab settings are found by clicking the Tools button, and then click Internet Options. Click the General tab, and then, in the Tabs section, click Settings. Check the Enable Tabbed Browsing check box. Click OK twice. Did you mean that when you opened Internet Explorer, multiple tabs were opening by default? If that's what you meant, open each site that you want in their own tabs, then open Internet Options and on the General Tab under the Home Page section, click Use Current. Click Apply and OK.

I guess you have MSN.
There is nothing wrong with MSNCcorefiles and msn.exe
It looks legit, since it is published by Microsoft.
I think what they're trying to do is add another restricted domain to the Zonemap/Domains list in the registry.
In the registry at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains, there is a long list of domains that are restricted with normal security settings in explorer.
If you ever looked at the list, it would be shocking for most to see the names and domains listed.

I think I would go for it and allow, and be done with it.
