I don't want to use a different browser!

I had to replace my hard drive last summer. Prior to that I never had any problems like this. I only started experiencing this in the last 3 months, so I don't know why any of my settings would have changed by themselves. I have had the same anti-virus all that time too. thanks

Click Tools, then Internet Options. On the Advanced tab click the reset button. Place a check in the Delete personal settings and click reset. This disables all of the add ins but does not remove your favorites. You'll need to reset your homepage afterward.

Wow, that was more than I expected! Somehow when I did that....I ended up installing IE11....lost all my passwords....Facebook said I was using the wrong password so I had to set a new one....which I know was wrong. So one issue I have now, if you could please help me....I've fixed it before but am not doing it right this time....how do I get my tabs back under the task bar? It came in the form of an extra line....plus I've lost me green circle in the upper right corner that told me if a site was safe???:

If you don't want to use a different browser, that's fine. But when a problem such as this rears it's ugly head, it's better to HAVE a second browser already installed. If a problem with IE should render it non-functional and you have nothing else, you are effectively cut off from the Internet. It won't hurt you or take up too much space on your hard drive to install another browser, and it just might save your bacon some day. I suggest Firefox, but I'll leave the choice to you.

Sorry about your passwords, I had no idea that you hadn't saved them somewhere safe.

The missing items may have been your add ins, which are usually the source of IE shutting down.

Internet Explorer should not have updated unless it has been attempting to update and could not because the browser was unhealthy. Have you seen any Windows or Internet Explorer updates fail just prior to the issues?

What were the names of the add ins that you were using? It sounds as if the green circle may have been WOT (Web of Trust). You can download it from https://www.mywot.com/ .

Did you mean that when you opened Internet Explorer, multiple tabs were opening by default? If that's what you meant, open each site that you want in their own tabs, then open Internet Options and on the General Tab under the Home Page section, click Use Current. Click Apply and OK.

I keep a record of my passwords, what I meant was a lot of them I had fixed so they could be remembered. That I could overcome, but I missed my tabs across the top which I believe are called tool bar tabs. I did a search and could not find any article which I could see to correct that issue. Several web sites tried to direct me to the Tools button, but I believe some things are missing....maybe with the IE 11??? Yes I have WOT. Anyway I decided to do a restore point from a few days ago! Got my tool bar back. I opted not to install IE 11 but I just checked and I have it anyway! There is not Enable Tabbed Browsing in my tabs section.

Don't know what is going on because I have lost that tab thing before and I was able to get it back. At least I have it right now. I guess I am calling it the wrong thing....it is a favorites bar, sorry. Thanks for your help.

The Favorites bar is accessed by right clicking in the tool bar area, then clicking next to Favorites Bar. There are several toolbars available there.

Maybe click on show tabs on a separate row?

That is it! I knew it was an easy fix!!! Not that I need fixing but I'm going to write it down so I will know next time!! Thanks so much!

Yes, it was still doing it but I did a search; evidently this is something that has been happening for several years for different reasons. The others, like mine, give the message that it is going to shut down but you can hit cancel and it doesn't really shut down...sometimes it does but most of the time you can keep it working. There is one posting as late as Feb 2015 which says:

If you get this error message 'Internet explorer has stopped working'. That means, must be a 3rd party “.dll” file is conflicting with iexplore.exe

so I went into tabs and un-checked enable 3rd party browser extensions, so I will see if that works. If not there are a whole bunch more suggestions!

I have a similar problem with Internet Explorer 10 crashing (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit). I thought that it was a Microsoft Update from February that caused the problem so I uninstalled all February Updates. Uninstalling the Updates didn't work so I reinstall all of them.

I then shut down all of my Toolbars, Menu Bar, Command Bar, Norton's Toolbar, Bing Toolbar & Google Toolbar. I have since restarted them one at a time. I ended up only activating just the Google Toolbar (because I use it a lot). Internet Explorer 10 now seems to be working just fine without crashing.

I know we all get use to the way something Looks or the Way it Works, but in the end it may come down to making a change such as I did. I liked all of the Toolbars I had there for one reason or another, but was it worth having my Browser Crash? Anyway, the only two I have running is the Google Toolbar and the Favorites Bar and I've been without a crash for over a week now!
