I'm not sure how many IE regular users there are here, but no issues with IE8, Win 7 on my end. All is normal.

Don't use IE, but I do have IE8 installed on my XP SP3, and I'd suggest you try updating to v.8 and see if that helps.

IE7 was okay but IE8 is Great! on my 2 XP/PC's on my new W7, I had IE8 but just updated to IE9 Beta.
You need to download IE8..check it out! if you have java make sure that is updated also..

First thing, and I do mean first, is backup the data that is important to you onto a removable media. Run your AV at complete/full system. Download, update, and run Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware separately with both on complete/full system.

If all comes up negative except for some innocuous cookies it would be time to go to Plan B. Hopefully RC will see this soon and refer you to Landzdown along with the proper instructions.

If I seem alarmist, I am. Though I could be 200% wrong I don't like this one.

I agree I would get malwarebytes asap update it and run a scan see what it finds and let us know. If you find any infection let it clean it but let us know what infection was found. We can proceed from there.

I might delete the .dat files with CCleaner before getting too involved changing things.

IE is just the software on your computer that gets you online...it's not something on the Internet. You could have either a problem with that software or you could have a problem with your Internet connection, but IE mis-performing for you would not be something others would be experiencing.

By deleting all temp internet files and cookies, yahoo and ancestry seem back to normal. But when I try to check my current version of Java, I get this message--

"Java has discovered application components that could indicate a security concern."

I ran a full system scan with Norton two days ago. It gives me the green arrow that all is ok. Removed 36 items.

But last night I got violent warnings from IE that I was under attack by viruses and Trojan horses and to click to deal with. Nothing like this has ever happened before. Was not sure if it was really from IE. I shut down IE and went to Norton which also showed an attack and that they dealt with it. Then I ran another full system scan. Mama mia--terror.

It found 31 items and deleted them.

Everything is running fine except that Java is still giving me the same message as above when I try to find my version.

Norton shows that I was attacked by a Trojan horse associated with Java but it was deleted and no further action is necessary--their words. The Trojan horse is--
a0ee3d65141.class--not sure if that is a zero or the letter O.

So what is going on? And I am packing for the airport.

you have been hit by one of the fake AV scams that pop up on the browser, in your case IE,saying you are infected.

PLEASE do as I asked and run malwarebytes immediately. You really need to go to LzD forum and let the team help you clean this from your pc it is not one you can do by simply running one scan. Your norton will not be able to clean this type of infection.

I would be careful doing any banking or sensitive stuff on that computer untill it is fully cleaned.

It sounds like you have not cleaned your pc of the old java which is likely what allowed you to get infected. Java has big security holes and you must remove all old Java and make sure you have the latest version. Using the secunia tool will help you see what needs updating on your pc.

I did run Malwarebytes. It took an hour and 22 minutes. The whole time it said "nothing" and then at the very end, it reported "two registry data items infected". They are (leaving out all the backslashes)--

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Security Center AntiVirusDisableNotify (Disabled Securtity Center)>Bad: (1) Good (0)>QUARANTINED AND DELETED SUCCESSFULLY

The second one is almost the same except it refers to the firewall.

I Googled these but answer not clear.

Second, I have not deleted Java. Should I? I do keep it updated.

What anti-virus software do you have installed?

Symantec/Norton and McAfee along with some others) will disable these settings because they have their own monitoring components and they don't want users bothered with twice the number of alerts should a component be disabled (these settings monitor whether your AV and Firewall are turned on or not).

If you have one of the above anti-virus softwares you can safely have Malwarebytes' ignore those items the next time you do a scan.

At this point I would go to the forum that Raven suggested. Don't make any changes, or uninstall anything.

Those are exactly the same keys Malwarebytes has found many times on seriousy slow, multiple trojan infected xp computers that I have had to deal with.
Usually a 3rd similar item along with a list of popular anti-virus to disable those from starting also if you look at the keys.

There were just the two I mentioned and I clicked to remove them, as advised. Hope that was the right thing to do.

Wouldn't NAV catch Trojan horses? I am diligent about the latest version and scanning. My computer does not seem very slow, tho not instantaneous either.

I use Ancestry.com a lot and it is very slow--just thought it was them. It relies on Java.

many AV programs including Norton do not do very well on trojan horses, malware scanners like malwarebytes and superantispyware are more capable for those type infections.
which is why it is advised to have a layered protection on any pc, the AV program that is updated daily and runs auto scans and the other programs you add to your protection and run the manual scans with them. I always also add to any windows pc spywareblaster which only has to be updated weekly no scans to run, just hit update then enable all protection so it's shield is green
