Here is some advice in the link below way down at the very bottom of that page where it says Download AVG FREE FOR PRIVATE USE ONLY it's the first download link IN BLUE.

Download it to the desktop. that will be the set-up program. Don't double click it yet.

Then uninstall AVG 7.5 from the add/remove programs list. 7.5 should uninstall ok it comes w/an uninstaller unlike the new version.

Then double click the Avg Icon on the desktop that you downloaded. CHOOSE CUSTOM INSTALL so you get the option to un-select items you don't want like tool bars, link scanners ect ect.

I've never had to uninstall an old version before installing a newer one. Just did the one to 8.5.278 last week and I know I didn't on that. I do DL to desktop first though before running it. Just seems to go smoother that way.

It's a step I like to do when working on someone else computer.

I never remove an old program when installing a newer version - unless the program itself insists. The only exception is upgrading a Windows version, I wipe the hard drive in that case to start everything clean again.

To each his/her own of course, nothing wrong with either approach as I see it.

Unless it is recommended by the manufacturer it is historically a very good idea not to do an over-write but rather a clean install. Some built-in download installers do search for and remove obsolete code but not all. If the old code is not removed the application can become bloated and increase the risk of conflict with prior versions.

Some users complain about the loss of settings or preferences. This does not always happen as this data is quite often stored in an alternate location, Even if not, the re-establishment of these indicators are really trivial and the clean install allows for conscious paring and rethinking.

Though it hasn't happened to me personally in a long time, there are reports of overwrite installs actually becoming independent installs where a user will unknowingly develop two independent versions of the same application on their system. I think back to years ago when I was first starting out and I stumbled through three different versions of Quicktime simultaneously.

I just downloaded the new free version of AVG 8.5 but I am having trouble with it. When I go to AVG it tells me most of the items are outdated. How can that be when I just downloaded it? Any help will be appreciated.

I got the same thing and brought up the page and hit "Update". No more problem after it updated. Grady

KJACJA, the version (8.5) is relatively new but there have been updates since it came out. So its always a good idea to update when you install anti spy or malware--as Grady said.

The latest updates for AVG at 4p.m. Eastern today is version 8.5.283 with virus data base definitions 270.11.28/2022

This is an example of what I referred to in another thread. AVG spreads "upgrades" out randomly so not all users get them at the same time. Dat file "updates" are uniform.

Currently, 20090325 at 2037 hours, my AVG reports as current.

v8.5.238 (yes 238) with definition database 270.11.29/2023

It's me again and I'm still having trouble trying to get the new version of the AVG 8.5 version to work. I tried to update it and I get the message "Update Failed". What am I doing wrong?

kjacja, you write as though you did in fact install the new version but cannot get updates, is that correct? If your computer runs 24/7 try a reboot then, look for updates. What are the version numbers and definition numbers on your AVG?

I too just installed version 8.5 and also got the Update Failed, a .bin file is missing error. I corrected it by uninstalling AVG 8.5 from Add/Remove Programs, then ran the installation again. After a reboot, it was able to successfully update. BTW, the AVG forum does suggest that earlier versions be uninstalled before 8.5 is installed.

Setting a restore point is also a great idea before actually installing any software.

I really appreciate all the info you all have given me. Still, I have not tried updating as yet. I guess I'm afraid if I uninstall the old one I will have problems installing the new version and I'll be without protection. See, people, I am so dumb about this stuff that I almost feel at time like just giving up the internet because I don't want the world to know just how ignorant I am about it. But again, thank you so much for your help. One of these days I'm going to shut my eyes and just go for it. lol BT

BT just make sure that staying where you are is not leaving you with out protection, if they are stopping the updates for the version you have you will be with out protection also.

What you can do is go download the new version of AVG and save it to your pc but do not install it yet, disconnect from the internet, go to add remove programs and remove the old version then go install the new version, reboot the pc, connecting to the internet at reboot, then go get the updates for the new version by telling it to check for updates.
Another alternative is once you have downloaded the new version to the pc immediately copy that to a cd/dvd or flash drive, so you have a back up copy, then go ahead and try the install of the new one with out removing the old one it may go smoothly for you and then you would be done, but if it did not, then just disconnect from the internet, go to add remove and remove all versions it shows of AVG, reboot (just to make sure) then pop in the backup you made of the new version and load it and install. NO need to go back on the internet while unprotected.
I do that with my programs anyway, I make a back up copy just in case I should need them and not have to go back online to get them.
And I agree any time I add or remove or make changes I do create a new restore point labeled so I know exactly where to go back to should I need to.

Well, here I am again and still no installation of AVG 8.5. Ho hum. I thought I did ezactly what everyone told me to do, trying over and over and over. I followed Zep's advice and all it did was take me to a site that made me order one of 6 things, which I was going to be charged for in order to get the free version. Ditto for raven's advice. Doesn't sound like it's free to me. I thought I had it downloaded but checked the add/remove and it wasn't in there anywhere. I checked the 'security' and it said I have afire wall and virus protection so I have no idea what is going on. I don't know what to do next. Just take a chance on being protected? Don't know. Just want you all to know I appreciate you helping me.
The only thing I managed to do was somehow get a bunch of MSN stuff on the top of the screen. Is that what you call a search thing? Told you I was stupid about this stuff. LOL BT

BT, I don't think you can go wrong at this site: MajorGeeks Freeware downloads. Click on one of the four Major Geeks sites not the Author's and your freeware version will download. Just watch as you install it and don't let it install any toolbars, etc. I don't know if it does or not but I know many installers do.
