AVG getting serious about updating to version 8???

When I turned my computer on this morning, AVG began its usual routine but quit midstream. I opened the control center and saw a red shield with an exclamation mark saying the update manager was in error. I then tried updating manually and found a priority update. I clicked on it, and it downloaded OK...

If you've upgraded to version 8, are you pleased with the function of the program? Are you finding it weighing down your computer until it completes its update more than the 7.5 version???

Never had a problem with the upgrade to v8 as it always worked just fine. From my readings the most prevalant reoccurring concerns were addressed with the further upgrades to now the current version of 8.0.138.

For what it is worth I disabled the Link Scanner as I found it unnecessary.

Hi breenthumb, I still use AVG, I have for years and I like it. I did run into an issue in late November in which I was continually asked to reboot. I posted on the AVG Forum and received the following fix from Big Al 43:(and it did work although I was not wild about the tone of the forum) "Restarting.... First check in the Advanced settings... Tools-> Advanced Settings-> Update in the 'When to update files' settings... it should be set to 'Update immediately' & 'Require confirmation from the user'... Now this should solve your restart issue.... Problem is most probably in failure of file replacing on Windows restart. Look into folder where AVG is installed whether file "updatecomps.cfg.prepare" exists. If yes, then delete existing file "updatecomps.cfg" and rename "updatecomps.cfg.prepare" to "updatecomps.cfg". ravencajun, I have uninstalled FF and rebooted, two times. It still happens. I found this in my advanced system information, under view the error log. ( The IP address lease then my IP numbers follow for the network card with network address then more numbers has been denied by the DHCP server then my IP address.)The DHCP server sent a DHCPNACK message) Also another one that said- (Your computer has lost the lease to it's IP address then my IP numbers on the network card with network address then more numbers.) Thanks so much for letting us know. I was getting an error messages that said "Connection to the update server has failed". I wasn't sure if it was AVG or my computer. I'll wait until it's fixed and try again. Dee

Go ahead and turn it off if you so wish. The warnings on the interface are just alerts. The AVG icon on the System Tray/Notification Area will also show an alert on it. To remedy that alert open the application interface>Right click on the Update Manager>On the appearing menu click on the offering to ignore. Being on an antediluvian DUN I never have anything set to check automatically. DA

I have the paid version of AVG 8.0.164 and find it to be the best anti-viral program I've ever run on my system [XPPro SP3 Office edition]...with the link scanner in place. As a matter of fact...I was so impressed with AVG months ago that I ditched a paid Trend Micro package [which I'd purchased to replace Norton/Symantec] 3 months into a year's contract and never regretted it for one moment. Needless to say...I'm a big AVG fan these days.

Hum,I didn't install AVG8 a few months back because it had an installation problem.

Not sure how one becomes excited about their anti-virus program, other than it is invisible an the computer doesn't have any virus problems. Both seem to be the case for AVG 7+ and Avast (I think the name is, which I have on another computer) and I use just the free version, another plus. I think AVG will stop supporting version 7 soon, then I'll again try to get 8 to load on my computer now running AVG 7+

I have AVG 8.0 for months now and have been very happy... no problems at all.

I've still got 7.5 too, updating just fine. Glad to know 8 is running smoothly now, for when I must change.

The way programs have been going lately, invisible, nonintrusive is reason enough for me to be a big fan too. Sandy

I am unfortunately seeing still a lot of negative reports on AVG8 on the other forums, in fact I am going to be changing one of my windows pcs from McAfee to something else, and with all the complaints still I am going to go with Avast for now. I think they will eventually get all the kinks worked out of version 8, they need to because a lot of people have jumped ship over the recent problems.

If I was going with AVG8 I would definitely follow the install instructions from their FAQ and NOT add on the extras.
