2 Questions about sons computer

Hi everyone,

I was talking to my son today and he was telling me that his computer was running very slow. He was told by a friend of his who works on computers that he has some trojans. One of the things he told me was that his friend will be coming over to remove the OS and start over. I am wondering how effective that would be? I have heard that it was not a good idea to be doing that, but I do know people who have done so. His wife is getting an external hard-drive to back up their system. What do you think of all of this, is there a way to get rid of the trojans that are there without having to start over?

One last question.

His friend recommended ibit security 360 version 1.40 for him to run. Has anyone heard of this free program and is it better than Malwarebytes? He has run a scan for Super-antispyware and also ran Malwarebytes and they show nothing wrong. He also has Macafee antivirus installed and his OS is Windows XPSP3. Do you have any recommendations for him? This is all that I know for now.
