I meant "turn off".

It just hangs saying it's turning off.

Might look in the even logs for something that might say its hanging.

Did you rollback to IE6?

Uninstall IE7 through your control panel, it should automatically send you back to an "IE7 ready IE6". If that doesn't help there is a repair option work around for the IE6 rollback that one of boys posted a while back for me. I didn't have a sestore point for IE6, so that may be why it didn't work for me. I installed IE7 theday after my new hard drive was installed...not wise.

If none of that works. Back up your files and insert your start up System or XP disc and start from scratch. That's what Charter told me. Its because of IE7 and the accompanying incresed security to Windows. Not good news is it?

I don't know what even logs are or where to find them. So I'd probably have to go to ms.com to find out about 'User Profile Hive Cleanup Service'.

Or I'll try rolling back to "IE7 ready IE6".

But before I try anything I'll have to get some RWs to backup word & other files, software updates, pics needing edited, etc., before starting from scratch.

I'm dragging my feet. I gotta do that. My IE 6 Rollback is closing up on me all the time. "Microsoft has to close".

To do the rollback you don't need to have copies or even save your favorites...it transfers and doesn't affect your private files.

Howerver if the Rollback doesn't work nor a repair...then that's about it, unless you've been hijacked.

I've heard of Internet Options and Control Panels being hijacked but never the closing applications of Windows...I suppose its possible. Since it occurred along with IE7,well that's more than likely it...unless your out of RAM. IE7 takes alot more to use.

Now you be sure and treat yourself to that MX500 mouse for 30.00. Don't settle for anything less.

Usually when windows won't shut down and hangs is because a process or program running in the background has not fully closed.
You don't have McAfee Antivirus by any chance.

I have that. Not McAfee, but the unresponding program upon shutdown.

Everytime I shut down, I get a square saying that something didn't respond, but then it shuts down anyway. Its ususally IE6. After two three clicks of web browsing, "Micrsoft has to close". Last night, I tried to delete my temp internet files, everytime I clicked the button, Microsoft had to close...I'm sick of looking at my desktop wallpaper, even though I like it. I'd rather see something else. I've got to quit complaining and back up my files.

Ummm, yes I do.

I had Norton, but got McAfee free through my ISP & can't remember if I did/didn't have turn-off problems with it.

You think I should unload McAfee & reload Norton?

McAfee is probably your problem. To find out, click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and remove McAfee. After it has been removed, go try your computer Turn Off and see if it shuts down normally.

Forget about Norton, it's a giant resource hog and will slow your machine to a crawl.

Well, I removed McAfee but the problem remains. I actually went back to Norton/Symantec b/c it wouldn't remove completely. We have extra RAM if that helps the resources any. We haven't noticed it being slow. I also switched from IE to Firefox & the prob remains.

So where do I find this?

Right click MyComputer, select Manage
You;ll see Event Viewer and it should show which application is hanging then maybe someone can suggest a fix.

Also, same difference - you can copy and paste in the Run line and press Return;

Click the little plus + sign and that will expand the error logs,
Click Applications to start with and scroll down the list to any errors you see that say something to the effect of 'Application Hang'. Double click it and a window pops open with a techie description and a link... click the link and see if it says how to fix it.

You might note what application was hanging and the event ID number and post it here too.

Alright, I checked out "Application" first & found:
a whole bunch of "Information", many "Warning" which had "Symantec AntiVirus" a few times, in large batches during a single day, "Ms Installer" a couple/few times, in batches of probably two, & "Userenv" everyday, in batches of two, right around the time I usually shut down the computer. When I clicked on such, I got the following:

So I went there & was validated. Then I downloaded & installed, & I'm positive I ran, the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service. Then I tried shutting down & the computer still hung at "Saving Settings" & needed turned off manually!

The other thing I got under "Application" was a few "Error" & each one was "Application Error".

I checked out "Security" but there was only "Success audit".

I checked out "Internet Explorer" and there was nothing.

I checked out "System" and there was a whole bunch of "Information", several "Error" & each of those were "Service Control Manager", & several "Warning" & most of those were "tcpip", plus a few "W32Time".

I haven't checked out any of the other "Warning" & "Error".

I don't know what to do b/c I'm computer-illiterate.

I think I'll just print all this out after submitting my reply & take such to Best Buy during the computer's annual checkup under our performance service plan/extended warranty, which is in May & let the Geek Squad deal with it.

By the way, the log showed it was happening before IE7 was installed (there were warnings & errors back to October I believe, maybe November) & it wasn't happening with McAfee.

So I removed Norton again (though I bet like last time part of it remains, & I don't know how to remove it) & went back to McAfee again, which is what I'm positive the guys at The Geek Squad last June suggested I use instead of Norton.
