when mine doesn't work I check the batteries. if that doesn't fix it, I move the the thing that is plugged into the PC. Sorry I don't know the name of it. It works like an antenna, needs moved around to find the best place. That sounds like the problem since the mouse will work when you move to the desk top.

It is called the transmitter antenna. I use a wireless keyboard and mouse and if that is not on the desk the mouse doesn't move. It might be called the receiver for the wireless signal. I use rechargeable batteries and when they are being charged , I have a USB wired mouse.

Sorry, I still don't know what it is I should be looking for. Is it something that is plugged into the back of the tower? If so, then what is it plugged into at the other end? I generally am not a stupid person, but this one has me thinking. Thanks.

What is the name or model number of your wireless Logitech mouse? I use one with my laptop and might be able to help.

I have absolutely no idea. Someone gave me this computer and mouse and its been fine till now. Is there something on the bottom of the mouse that will give you a clue? I know it's a Logitech.

If you look at the bottom end of the mouse (the end towards you), do you see a small rectangular section about 1/4 inch by 2/3 inch? Looks like something is sitting in that rectangular area.

It doesn't appear to be similar to my mouse, but I realize that Logitech makes many different models. Just thought that, on the chance that we had the same ones, I would at least be familiar with some of its features and might be able to help. I'm far from having the kind of expertise that so many others on this forum have, so I would defer to others to assist you further. I'm sure the last thing you need is "help" that is of marginal use or that might unwittingly lead you astray. Good luck!

sapphires, in the photo in the link below is a wireless mouse and the transmitter. The transmitter looks very similar to a USB drive. This is not a Logitech, but it will look something like this. There should be one plugged into your computer, probably in the back. Check it and make sure it is securely attached.

if you look in the pictures the black thing that has the cord that plugs into your pc usb port is the receiver which was asked about, this one has a large one that sits on the desk not a stick type. Your mouse does need to be in sight line of the receiver for it to get the signal properly so make sure that receiver has not been moved or covered up or out of line of sight of the mouse. Also they all have reset buttons on the mouse somewhere and on the receiver if they get out of sync you can go through the sequence for that model to sync them back up.
It may just be time to upgrade to a newer wireless mouse.

This seems to be the sync procedure for your mouse and receiver.
If you experience trouble synchronizing a device to a receiver, try the following.

1. Removing the batteries from the mouse or keyboard.
2. Press and hold the Connect button on the receiver for 15 seconds.
3. Re-insert the batteries into the mouse or keyboard.
4. Press the connect button on the mouse or keyboard.

That's it! I looked in the back again and saw the green thing connected to the pc like Daylilydazed said. I followed the cord and found the antenna that looked like the one in your link. It looks just like mine. The antenna piece had fallen behind the back of the desk and logged between the wall and desk. Yippee! The mouse is working properly and all is well at the moment in Sapphires house.

The OP's problem may have been resolve.

As an addendum to the thread, I've one of the first Logitech wireless optical mouse and it works somewhat better on a plain white dull piece of paper than on a mouse pad.

That happens often either they get moved or shifted around so they are not close enough to the mouse, a long time ago I had one like that which had the part that sat on my desk and it would get knocked off from time to time. I love the newer ones that just have the little stick that plugs into the usb port, all of the ones I use now are like that.

By the way anyone looking for a new wireless mouse, I personally love my little GE wireless model 98792 have used it for years, it is small which works best for me since I have problems with my hands from my arthritis and my neuropathy. Anyway I was just at Big Lots and lo and behold they had a whole bunch of them there for I think $14 each. This is a link to what it looks like. They are handling much of the Circuit city close out so they are getting in some good tech buys.

I am glad that you have solved your problem Sapphires. I too have to say that I hope to help some one in the future. My husband and son come to me when they need some help with the computer they use. I had to show my hubby how to copy and paste until he remembered how. It takes several times for him to see and do before he remembers.
