Mouse pads only existed because early mice used roller-balls and wouldn't work accurately on slick surfaces. Optical mice don't have that issue and will work on most surfaces, hence no mouse pad required. Doesn't hurt to have one, however.

I have an optical mouse that I use on the keyboard stand which is made from a wood-toned shelf. The movement of the mouse scratches the surface - so, a mouse pad!

My optical mouse must be fickle. It will work on the metal of the laptop, but not on the matte surface of the desk. So mousepad it is. I never thought of corkboard. Good idea.
