Defrag for Windows 7

Hi,

I am using a new computer with Windows 7 and just ran a v-e-r-y s-l-o-w defrag cycle. It was just run two weeks ago, so it shouldn't have been that fragmented. But it seemed to take quite a bit longer than my other machine did running XP SP3 and with a lot more files.

What have other users of the W-7 OS found with regard to defragging ? Is the included defragger enough or is there a better one ?

(I tried a search here for threads regarding W-7 and defragging, but most of the defrag discussions were about XP.)

I use the Auslogics Disk Defrag. It's faster and I like it better. Someeone mentioned Defraggler in this forum but I haven't tried that one.

Did you know

Like Windows Vista, Windows 7 allows for scheduled defragmentation jobs In fact, defragmentation is automatically scheduled by default, which means that most users will never have to adjust any settings in order to optimize disk performance. Well, assuming you don't turn off your computer at night, anyway. By default, the defragmenter is set to run at 1:00AM.

she or you need to go to LzD forum register there and ask for assistance to remove this infection. Please do NOT use tools with out their specific direction and guidance. Create your own post at this section of the forum do not follow advice given to any one else just wait for direction for your specific problem. Thanks, I'm running XP Home. I did posts a number of times on Vista starting a couple of years ago when I purchased an Acer notebook with Vista. I had a lot of problems and one a hardware or driver problem that I couldn't get sufficient help from the supplier on, so I returned the machine and purchased a old stock Gateway notebook that had/has XP. The Smart Defrag is still running this morning, ran all night and has now been active for at least 30 hours, it now shows about 75% done. I understand, if this defrag works, not sure how I tell, then I will not run XP Defrag as per advice here, thanks.

1. Error Checking- This takes about 35 minutes. Start - my computer - right click local disk (C) - properties - Tools Tab - Error checking section - Check now - check mark both boxes - Start - This requires a restart to begin. Start - Run - type - sfc /scannow - OK Don't forget the space between c and / You may need the Recovery CD if any thing is found wrong. Don't insert unless asked for. Takes about 35 minutes. Disk Defragmenter Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter Or you can do as others have written.

For Scandisk do this - Click Start click My computer click on C:\ to highlight it click File at the top of the screen Click Properties in the drop down menu click Tools tab in the 'Error checking choice click 'Check now' Plcae a check mark against either of the 2 options if you wish - I would click to "Automatically fix errors" click Start Once that has completed return to the same place and click to Defrag the drive. Do not be afraid to defrag your E:\ drive Sugar, if it is the larger and perhaps busier then maybe it is more important to defrag that than the C:\ drive. Do it when you are leaving to prepare a meal or any other time you will be away from the computer.

I have used Auslogics Defrag for several years on my XP machine, so I downloaded and installed it on my new Windows 7. Just ran it last evening and it finished in no time at all.

I'm glad to know the Aulogics defragger has no problems on Windows 7. :-) I'll download it and try it.

zep, I did know about the scheduled defrag on W7. Overnight's out for me, since I turn the computer off then. But it's on 'sleep' during the day. If I don't like Auslogics' one I may just go back to the W7 one and schedule it for late morning or something.

Oh, one quick follow-up question: do users of the Auslogics defragger use the 'defrag and optimize' setting, or the regular 'defrag' one ?

I simply use the defrag option. I believe the "optimize" is an additional application that you must pay for.

The optimize defrag is free in the drop down button & the Action menu item.
The 'advanced menu' item to optimize your pc is a different program that maybe will cost you.

Like it says, I run the optimize defrag about every week or so.
The check box in the options to move system files to the front of the heap, I would avoid that if you plan on running regular scheduled default type windows defrags also.

Does this have something to do with the defragging that is (or can be) done at boot up ? I read something to that effect somewhere, but couldn't quite 'get' what was being talked about.

I don't see any options to run defrag at start up.

It does have an option to start with windows and auto defrag when system is idle which might be nice for some. But to me thats just another 'start up waste' of some memory and boot time.
