7 Tips for Placing a Bed in Front of a Window

Whether it's the only option or just the best one, here's what to do with a window behind the bed

I once rented a heritage apartment where the bedroom was so tiny that the only logical place to put the bed was in front of a window. It took some time to get used to the idea, but I started to enjoy waking up with the sun rising over my head. No need for the alarm clock! See what designers recommend when dealing with this could-be-awkward bed placement.

1. Take focus away from the window by placing large items on either side. In this case, symmetrical paintings and table lamps balance the room nicely.

2. Keep the headboard low. The headboard of this bed just lines up with the window sill. This keeps the room from being too dark. The double-hung windows are still within reach for operation.

3. Treat the window and wall as one surface. I like how the designer wrapped the draperies from the window and around the corner. There is enough space for the bed to be turned sideways but the sunlight coming from behind this contemporary bed is much more dramatic.

4. Use top-down blinds for privacy. This cleverly designed bedroom uses top-down/bottom-up blinds for ease of use. This is the size of the bedroom in my former rental apartment. Repeating the window valance and blind provides a consistent look.

5. Put draperies around the window. This cozy cottage makes use of the millwork on the wall, and the drapes were hung in line with the window mullion as well. They can be closed to customize the brightness in the room.

6. Use a post bed frame to disguise the window. This elegant hotel-like guest bedroom uses draperies in a similar way as the previous room, but the dropped ceiling gives the sleeping area a more intimate feeling.

7. Leave space behind the window. If you have the space, why not just let the bed float in the room? The minimal legs on all the furniture enhance the floating feel.

It's a decorating trick I've used to solve clients' bedroom dilemmas and a few of my own homes' problem too. This is the last house we did it in. Every wall had windows (3 walls out of 4) so you had to pick one no matter what. I loved how it turned out.
