Windows 8, Defrag and Disk Check, how

With Windows 7 and XP I made use of "My Computer" and "C" from the File Manager (Windows Explorer) to find information on my computer hardware and operating system via a right click on "my computer" and I gained access to tools such as defrag and disk check via a right click on "C".

In Windows 8 I find a right click on "computer" yields the computer information I"d expect to see, but right click on the "C" drive goes into a long wait and doesn't return. I have not waited more than a minute or two before giving up.

Does W8 not provide HDD tools val the right click on the "C" drive as displayed by the File Manager?

It's still there on Properties by right clicking C drive like previous versions of windows.. but it does seem to be slower to clean. Defrag & weak Error Checking and on Tools tab. On a new computer running the system cleanup and more/shadow copy clean is probably helpful after its a week old.

Better error checking is from a Command Window (admin) chkdsk /f

I put Vista into a 50gb partition and total used space on that partition is around 15Gb. Takes an hour to defrag it here if I haven't done it in a week or so. I usually close most things in the tray and all windows then open a cmd window, start it & walk away and let it rip... defrag -c -w If I defrag a couple times per week its maybe a 25 to 35 minutes, sometimes less. I too miss a graphical defrag display. Vista defrag pauses whenever you have something else actively doing something, on the same CPU anyhow. If you don't have ample free hard drive space it slows it down too. Also if you have minimal memory, that would tend to slow it a bit. 3hrs.. sounds like you either have a bunch of saved files... or you have some other program running doing stuff. Windows indexing service can slow some computers too.

Try ravens advice. Here's how to do Safe Mode In case you need to. 1. Restart your computer. 2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu. 3. My goodness gracious, this really isn't that complicated. If you suspected a bad drive, what you should have done is determined the manufacturer of the drive and downloaded the manufacturers diagnostic utility. If it reported errors, replace the drive (perhaps under warranty) if not, look elsewhere for the source of trouble. As it appears you replaced the original drive, the new drive is blank and has no operating system hence the error message. You have four choices: Reinstall the original drive and run the appropriate diagnostic utility to see if the drive is actually failing. Leave the new drive in place and reinstall the operating system via the supplied recovery disc which will return the computer as it was when you first opened the box. Once that's up and running, get all the Windows updates and install any software you'd like to use. Of course, you'll loose any data on the old drive. You do not need to download any drivers first unless you've made big hardware changes to the computer. "Big" changes would most likely be video or sound cards. Use the original drive to make a clone (exact copy) of the drive contents on the new drive. Every drive manufacturer includes the necessary software and instructions in the package or makes it available as a free download from their website. While this method will preserve your son's data, if the problem wasn't the drive but rather, say, some corruption in Windows, those problems will continue. Leave the new drive in place and reinstall the old drive. Run the recovery disc, installing Windows to the new drive. As described above, get Windows updates and reinstall any software. Selectively copy data files from the old drive to the new drive. If the diagnostic software indicates impending failure, do this part quickly. Let us know how you want to proceed and if you need additional instructions.

I am using DVD+R to reuse one I have, looking in my physical file I see I have 5 new ones that don't need to be erased. Still I wonder. I purchased these back in 2007, progress may have left them behind. The label is: DVD RW, DVD+R I should be able to read and write, hum, doesn't say erasable. The mfg is Memorex and proudly proclaims: Recordable, Enregistrable and Grabable the last two of which I have no clue to the meaning. I think I may have purchased them for use in a DVD audio/video recorder.. but that is digital too. I am pretty sure I can stick in my DVD player/recorder (not on the computer) and erase/overwrite..not sure I want to got to the trouble to check. Thanks for the link to third party DVD software. I'll look there but most likely will just use a new DVD. It lists a 4.7 GByte capacity. Does newer technology hold more? I think the Toshiba script talked about 4.7 GByte (may be the standard still) and two DVDs.

That'sf the windows properties tool I was looking for. Now I'm worried there is something wrong with my new computer, as I posted when I right click "C" - actually called "Gateway(C)" which must be a result of me naming the drive during initialization, could that be a problem? Yes, I can "rename it" if is isn't a some deeper OS level. I have right clicked that drive and the wait is very long or it doesn't work.

As in Windows 7, "My Computer" is just "Computer" or I'm over looking something.

You can name the drive whatever you wish. Note Mikie has Win8Pro. Perhaps he has a second hard drive in there.

Mine is called Seagate and the reason is simple. I once had 2 drives on here similar in size so to separate them I used Seagate and Maxtor.

I just have the one drive.. slow laptop drive.

Disk Cleanup is in Control Panel / Administrator tools too.

Or you can get fancy from Command Prompt (admin)
cleanmgr /TuneUp:101
check all the boxes you like then run
cleanMgr c:

Just poking around in File Manager and the only icon that responds to right/click=properties is "computer". It appears MS has reduced the right click for properties as a use for all tool. I can't figure why.

Slight diversion, I have started using my laptop computers as a laptop, not as desk top with remote keyboard and display. I now find that when typing, such as now, the display will suddenly transfer to another site/display. Or, the (just now it happened) I will suddenly find the typing has either stopped, or transfered to some other location on the message field.

What's up, am I touching the touch pad with my hands, which are poised just above the pad? Makes me wonder if I can turn the touch pad off, and use a wireless mouse and not have trouble with interrupts springing up while I type.

I went to a wireless mouse. Single AA battery type. Microsoft 3500. has a switch on the bottom that I never switch off ,. battery lasts about 2 weeks on a charge. Using some old Camedia nimh must be ten years old and still work better than new everyeady long shelf life ones. All are cold weather sensitive .. and I'm in florida.

Should have a key press combo to disable the touchpad, mines Fn+F6 ,,,, or if Synaptics in the Mouse settings is a disable button for the touchpad.

Are you logged in as an user/admin account ? Properties on the Drives and Folders should work.. if not maybe try to run a couple scans. from the Command Prompt (admin)
