Good post. Actually Windows 7 has a number of features not available in previous Windows flavours.

I do not promote other forums here per se but for those with Windows 7 there are some great tutorials here. Worth sharing since daylily started a good thread.

If I have a Windows 7 netbook with no CD drive, can I make a repair "disk" on a thumb drive?

This not a repair disk for the HP, it is a repair for Windows operating system.

My post was meant for kudzu9, That user would need to follow a different set of instructions as the Netbook does not have a CD ROM Drive. I gave a link to make the recovery / repair disc using a USB Flash drive. Personally I would purchase a CD ROM Drive for the netbook. I'm not sure if the particular netbook KUDZU9 has would be able to boot from USB.

I understand, I am not mad at you, I just wanted to make clear that it was for Windows, not a recovery disk for a HP computer. When I got my desktop and laptop, I made the Recovery disks and labeled them that they were for the computer recovery. Making a difference some times helps if it is explained a little clearer.

This is for a repair disk. To create a recovery set your will need 3 DVDs, if you have Windows 7 you should create these in case the hard drive fails. Then you can re-install after replacing the hard drive with no additional cost above the hard drive.

I did what daylily said to do and nothing came up.

I did a search in help and made the disc. Since this is for windows 7 64 bit would it work on my lap top which is W 7 64 or should I make one with the laptop?

That disc should work. You should actually put the disc in and boot from it to see if it boots and presents the recovery options that it's intended to provide. You can also use a Vista repair disc on a windows 7 machine and a Win 7 repair disc on a Vista machine. All the repair disc does is provide access to recovery options already present on the computer. Those are the same options available if you press the F8 Key during restart. So boot from the disc you made and you should see these options:

Start up Repair

System Restore

System Image Recovery You would need to have a system image somewhere for that option to work.

zep, it sounds like this is just a recovery thing instead of a repair. Is this something I need since I have the HP factory reformatting CDs.

It's always good to have as many options as you can when a computer will not boot. So yes the repair Disc that daylilydayzed brought to our attention is a very good disc to have. I made one first thing and I have a System disc too with Windows 7 on it.

In the event that a computer will not boot to windows or to safe mode You could use this disk that daylilydayzed brought up and it just may save the day, without having to do a complete recovery. It's a must have disc.

Thank you Zep, Now I know how important it is to have that disk.My daughter has never backed up the laptop she bought for my hubby, so I did it when she was not here. I told my husband it needs to be backed up every week or so and where the discs would be if he has to back it up when I am not home
