Checking for external hard disk errors

Sorry if my English is not very good ...

My OS is Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

I have a Hitachi external hard drive (where I keep all my photos) connected to my computer. A few days ago, while I was copying some files from my computer to the external drive, there was a power outage.
Since then, when I start the external drive, a Windows message appears saying that there are errors on the disk and offering to check and fix errors. Is it safe to proceed with this operation, knowing that this external drive is the only place where I keep my photos? Should I copy them back to my computer before trying to fix the errors?

Basically it's safe and the right thing to do, imo.
If you don't run the disk check, you would risk writing new photos to a damaged area of the drive.

As long the disk's file table is not damaged, probably the worst that would happen is a few bytes or sectors have some corruption, and if you're lucky, you only have one or two damaged or irretrievable photos.

If you do lose access to the drive, there are recovery tools specifically for recovering photos, namely "PhotoRec" which works very well.

After you get everything working again, you might think about some kind of backup system so you have more than one copy of the photos.

I keep copies on my computer and on my external HD. I don't like to have them stored in only one place. I think the whole point is keeping them in 2 places in case one fails.

My goodness gracious, this really isn't that complicated. If you suspected a bad drive, what you should have done is determined the manufacturer of the drive and downloaded the manufacturers diagnostic utility. If it reported errors, replace the drive (perhaps under warranty) if not, look elsewhere for the source of trouble. As it appears you replaced the original drive, the new drive is blank and has no operating system hence the error message. You have four choices: Reinstall the original drive and run the appropriate diagnostic utility to see if the drive is actually failing. Leave the new drive in place and reinstall the operating system via the supplied recovery disc which will return the computer as it was when you first opened the box. Once that's up and running, get all the Windows updates and install any software you'd like to use. Of course, you'll loose any data on the old drive. You do not need to download any drivers first unless you've made big hardware changes to the computer. "Big" changes would most likely be video or sound cards. Use the original drive to make a clone (exact copy) of the drive contents on the new drive. Every drive manufacturer includes the necessary software and instructions in the package or makes it available as a free download from their website. While this method will preserve your son's data, if the problem wasn't the drive but rather, say, some corruption in Windows, those problems will continue. Leave the new drive in place and reinstall the old drive. Run the recovery disc, installing Windows to the new drive. As described above, get Windows updates and reinstall any software. Selectively copy data files from the old drive to the new drive. If the diagnostic software indicates impending failure, do this part quickly. Let us know how you want to proceed and if you need additional instructions.

I surprisingly ran into this same issue. I've called HP before, the first time being when i took my new Pavilion Slimline out of the box and the hard drive was not being recognised. I called and was immediately told that it was no longer under warranty. I said i had just bought it about 4 hours ago at a major retailer. I was told it didn't matter, apparently it was an older model that was on the store shelves for some time now. Four calls and three hours later my computer was working, sort of. I had a few calls in the past 9 months, usually for not booting properly or at all. I'm still waiting for recovery discs from about 9 months ago. Last night i came home and my computer was frozen. I had to reboot it. It ran the CHKDSK (again) and afterwards i was missing about 100GB of data. I called HP today. After he said his greeting i opened with "pending hard drive failure". There was no talk of recovery discs. He had me run the hardware diagnostics. Surface scan : HD535-2W. The fun lies in finding a service location in Calgary. He said they had service centres & partners EVERYWHERE. Their server was offline so we couldn't get it from their website. He gave me businesses to call. In a city of over 1000000 people you'd think there would be SOMEWHERE i could go to have the hard drive replaced. He was very helpful. I just wish their computers were too. It would save me all of these calls, from which i am taking a break. This would be the first time i got someone who really listened to me too. It's really nice when that happens.

I just bought an external drive this week and love it. Apart from being able to free up space on C:\, it is good for arranging automatic backups. I have it set to back up all of my documents, music, and pictures 4 days a week at a time when I am not going to be using the computer. Until now, I had been putting these backups on CDs and DVDs, but it is too easy to forget to make those backups, and it is also a nuisance saving and keeping track of the disks I saved them on. I like the way I can just drag things to the icon for the external drive, too. Easier than burning a CD or DVD, and it has the advantage that you can erase things and use that space again, the way you might on a floppy or a zip disk. My external drive is a 500GB Maxtor that I found on sale Mon. at Fry's in San Diego, for only $99.99. (They seem to change the products on sale from day-to-day, so I don't guarantee anyone will find the same thing at the same price another day. DH paid the same there the day before I did, but he only got a 300GB Maxtor external hard drive) Today a friend who has a business servicing other companies' computers told me he considers Western Digital's hard drives to be among the best, so you got a good one. However, I was happy when he also said I had gotten a bargain. Guess this is the time of year to look for bargains in computer stuff! I probably should mention that since my FireFox browser's "Bookmarks" (=Favorites in I.E.) and things I have saved in its "Scrapbook" add-on, or extension, are not located in My Documents and thus do not come under the automatic backing up, I am going to take care to back them up to the external drive manually every few days.

That sounds like one of those FakeHDD family of rogue anti-spyware programs. This family of rogues pretends to be a system optimization program that will solve errors with your computers hard disks, memory, and performance. It will also display fake alerts stating that your computer has numerous computer issues, they also hide files by changing the attribute in the properties folder to hidden, so the files look grayed out. The odd thing here is Removable drives like flash cards and usb drives The FakeHDD rogues usually do not target these types of drives. In My computer, find your external drive E, F, G, whatever it is, right click it and scan it with your Anti Virus. I doubt it will find anything, but I'm still not sure how those files got hidden, so you can try the steps below: You can do this by right-clicking on the file or folder, selecting "Properties" and un-checking the "Hidden" checkbox.

Thank you all! My current computer is low on disk space, so I had to keep them on the external drive only. I'm getting a new computer this weekend, and I'll finally be able to keep my photos on the external drive AND on the computer. I also plan to burn my best photos on DVDs.

Let us know what happens.
My guess is you'll be ok.
But that (free) PhotoRec program is really great for recovering photos.
The same company - .cgsecurity.org - also makes TestDisk with which I've recovered many drives with lost partitions.

I have decided to do the check and repair when I have my new computer. My current one is not very stable, and I'm afraid that something goes wrong during the procedure.
But I'll come back and let you know how it went.
And thank you Kent for telling me about PhotoRec. I just hope I won't need it...

Well, I did the check and repair (it was a loooong process), and now all seems to be OK. I don't know if I have lost photos (there are too many to check), but at least the error message is not there anymore. And I have copied all my photos on my new computer's hard drive, so they are now stored in two places.

That's good news !

You can check the event logs and get an idea how many errors were found, if any.
There are several tutorials out there to find the "chkdisk log" or results, but this one looks pretty good :
