Where's Scandisk/Defrag?

I have Windows XP , wondering where the scandisk is, I seem to have defrag there in the Accessory lineup, but how does one clean up this new system like I used to do the scandisk/defrag with the windows 98.

Can someone give me a clue as to the procedure for this new make and model? Appreciate your time here, fellas, I am having somewhat of a time getting used to the new icons etc., but slow and steady wins the race.

Don't even ask me what else I can tell you about this machine, it was a built one, and I don't know a thing, just that it is faster, and I am appreciative of that for sure.

Open My Computer > right click Local Disk C: > Properties > Tools Tab > Error-checking/Check Now, put a check in both boxes and click start.
You'll get a message that it will run on next boot or restart.

Be prepared to wait when the Error Check starts. It will be on a blue screen, and it will go through five checks. The last one is very, very slow, so don't think that nothing is happening. It will show you the % complete. When it is finished, it will complete the reboot. Then you run the defrag.

Might want to try AusLogics Disk Defrag ... freeware/popular/Fast/small... seems to do safe defrags very quickly & in the windows normal alignment ways. It has a reports feature that would tell you what didnt defrag because it was locked. Mostly here its the System Restore files that are locked when defragging. It runs here in less than five minutes total.. maybe run it once per week,,, then every now and then I run windows defrag from a prompt with the consolidate option and then that only takes 10 minutes. 1. Error Checking- This takes about 35 minutes. Start - my computer - right click local disk (C) - properties - Tools Tab - Error checking section - Check now - check mark both boxes - Start - This requires a restart to begin. Start - Run - type - sfc /scannow - OK Don't forget the space between c and / You may need the Recovery CD if any thing is found wrong. Don't insert unless asked for. Takes about 35 minutes. Disk Defragmenter Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter Or you can do as others have written.

For Scandisk do this - Click Start click My computer click on C:\ to highlight it click File at the top of the screen Click Properties in the drop down menu click Tools tab in the 'Error checking choice click 'Check now' Plcae a check mark against either of the 2 options if you wish - I would click to "Automatically fix errors" click Start Once that has completed return to the same place and click to Defrag the drive. Do not be afraid to defrag your E:\ drive Sugar, if it is the larger and perhaps busier then maybe it is more important to defrag that than the C:\ drive. Do it when you are leaving to prepare a meal or any other time you will be away from the computer.

I suggest she uninstall any unused programs and do a disk cleanup Start > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. I use ccleaner but disk cleanup will get rid of some of the junk. She can then start the computer in safe mode by tapping the F8 key as the computer starts up. She will get a screen where she can choose to startup in safe mode. She can then right click on 'My Computer' click on 'Properties' click on the 'Tools' tab and check for errors by clicking 'Check Now' and then defrag by clicking 'Defragment Now'. This can be done without starting in safe mode but for someone who is new to the process I think this is the easiest way.

Thanks folks for your timely advice, I am green about a lot of stuff with this newer edition, and am hoping that this will last me for the rest of my computer days? Ya think?
At least I can hope someone comes out with a really easy edition of something for the computer in us all, I am not a whiz by any means, don't need a lot of gadgets and whistles, just something to keep me in touch with the outside world.
Reading the first 2 postings, seems I might want to do this overnite, or at a time when I feel that I am not going to be on the computer, and appreciate your kindness in sharing the other side of the coin.
