scan disk - defrag

First here is what I know about my computer: windows XP Media center Edition AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500+

2.21GHz 960MB of ram

Physical address extention Acer

300 GB harddrive

It has 2 partitions C & E. Of course C is my working drive.

Most on E is pictures I use in Paint Shop Pro. There is a LOT there but still have a lot of room.

My question is how do I set it to just scan disk & defrag drive C. IT would take a LONG, LONG time to do drive E. Drive E is still 73% free but C is only 17% free(it was devided so E had a lot more). I'm sure I have a lot on drive C I don't need but a defrag & scan would help too. It has been a long time since I did them. I am afraid to do to much cleanup on C.

For Scandisk do this -

Click Start
click My computer
click on C:\ to highlight it
click File at the top of the screen
Click Properties in the drop down menu
click Tools tab
in the 'Error checking choice click 'Check now'
Plcae a check mark against either of the 2 options if you wish - I would click to "Automatically fix errors"
click Start

Once that has completed return to the same place and click to Defrag the drive.

Do not be afraid to defrag your E:\ drive Sugar, if it is the larger and perhaps busier then maybe it is more important to defrag that than the C:\ drive. Do it when you are leaving to prepare a meal or any other time you will be away from the computer.

I'll start that when I go to bed tonite.. I go to church so MAYBE it will be finished before I get home. Would it be better to do them 1 at a time or both at once?
I have 31.5 GB of pictures on E. I remember our 1st computer had way less than 1 GB total. We won't even talk about the commodore 64 LOL

You might try opening a cmd window and type ipconfig /? flushDNS might help, might not,,, but its would be my guess at an inititial thing to do. ipconfig /flushDNS (i think thats the correct word/command) Might while that cmd window is open also do TraceRT www.yahoo.com and see if it resolves that url to an ip number quickly,,, as well as all the router paths to yahoo ip# fairly quickly.

Just poking around in File Manager and the only icon that responds to right/click=properties is "computer". It appears MS has reduced the right click for properties as a use for all tool. I can't figure why. Slight diversion, I have started using my laptop computers as a laptop, not as desk top with remote keyboard and display. I now find that when typing, such as now, the display will suddenly transfer to another site/display. Or, the (just now it happened) I will suddenly find the typing has either stopped, or transfered to some other location on the message field. What's up, am I touching the touch pad with my hands, which are poised just above the pad? Makes me wonder if I can turn the touch pad off, and use a wireless mouse and not have trouble with interrupts springing up while I type.

Joyce, most of the time when I see a defrag unable to finish it's because of hard drive issues. Often it's something simple that a disk check can take care of it and sometimes it's more serious. Anytime there's something that's not right, it's a reminder to _______ _____? That's right, back up! I'd suggest frequent disk checks to make sure there's no blatant problems. Personally I like Diskeeper over the Windows defragmenter but either way, I'd check it often. Do a disk check first, then defrag. Shut down as many programs as possible or run from safe mode. Also, when you do a disk check, check the boxes for attempt recovery and automatically fix file system errors. This will require a reboot to use all resources possible. More for my Computer than myself, but I do get the benefit. I gave the Computer a complete Spring Cleaning! Got Windows Updates. Updated and scanned all scannables. Did Scan Disk and Defrag. Downloaded and ran cCleaner. All squeaky clean. Sue
