SpeedUpMyPC 2009 I would stay away from this for now, lets fix the defrag problem first, make sure no screen saver is running during a defrag, actually I would boot the pc into safe mode, power down the pc then power it back up keep hitting the f8 key untill you get the advanced options menu using the arrow keys choose "Safe mode" now do your defrag from that mode let us know..

I would also check the disk for errors first. Double Click on my computer, right click on the C: drive and select properties. In the tools tab, select Check now. Make sure both boxes are checked (automatically fix errors and Scan and attempt recovery) and click Start. It will tell you you need to reboot. Reboot and let it check for errors. This can take a fairly long time, especially on a large disk.

Once it finishes, try the defrag and see if it works (using safe mode if necessary).

After following both of your advice I am happy to say that the defrag is back to 99 percent and even though the box pops up and says it was not able to defrag everything, when I went to find out what it couldn't defrag there was nothing inside the box. I don't know why it says that when the box is empty. Anyway everything seems to be functioning much better now. Thank you both for your much needed help, I really appreciate it.

how much free space do you have available on that hard drive? One reason some won't complete or do a defrag is when you are getting low on free space, it takes a certain amount to be able to do a defrag. Under my computer go to your c drive and see what it says is available.

I have 74.5 GB so that couldn't have been the problem. It is working fine now, still don't know what caused it.

We would need to know the size of hard drive first, then look at your free space that number should be at least 20% of the total amout of hard drive space for windows to function at its best..

Joyce, most of the time when I see a defrag unable to finish it's because of hard drive issues. Often it's something simple that a disk check can take care of it and sometimes it's more serious. Anytime there's something that's not right, it's a reminder to _______ _____? That's right, back up! I'd suggest frequent disk checks to make sure there's no blatant problems. Personally I like Diskeeper over the Windows defragmenter but either way, I'd check it often. Do a disk check first, then defrag. Shut down as many programs as possible or run from safe mode.

Also, when you do a disk check, check the boxes for attempt recovery and automatically fix file system errors. This will require a reboot to use all resources possible. Have you been doing it this way or just a basic one?

Hi, Cynic. Joyce, I use Auslogics Defrag. I like it much better than the MS defrag. It is fast and gives you a report when it has finished. Don't have a link handy, but just Google the name and you'll find it.

I have a 225GB hard drive with 197 GB free and I have always gotten that message that it was unable to defrag everything...and like thirdfrt, there is nothing in the box when I click "view report"....I have no red "defragmented file" lines showing and when I click "analyze", it always says I don't need to defrag. Do I have a problem if I get that message?

My brother swears by this one but I think you have to pay.
